rudder post packing nut size

Mike Ondra

Does anyone have the size for the flat wrench required for the SM plastic rudder post packing nut.

Amazon has - 2-1/4" Shaft Packing Wrench for "Rudder Stuffing Box" – but it seems our nut is larger.

Thanks,

Re: Genoa halyard splice broken

Derick Gates

Problem was solved easily by the riggers, who dropped a thin line weighted with about 15 nuts down from the top of the mast (with some significant jiggling to avoid getting hung up part way) until this line could be seen and fished out of the lower opening with a stiff wire. I have elected to go with 40 meters of continuous halyard rather than the spliced-in-the-middle system.  Less trouble and more secure in the long run, in my opinion.

I made the halyard a little longer than necessary to be able to lop off the last couple of feet at the head of the sail if I find wear or UV damage where it goes over the Genoa halyard block (thanks for the idea Bill Rouse). The 'extra' line at the base of the mast will get protected from UV damage with a line bag, or something similar.

Herbert,
We've left the boat from April to December this year in Linton Bay Marina.
The place is still improving but the main services and prices are acceptable.
New travel lift and fuel.
You'll need a car for shopping. The marina has one to rent at 50$ a day. There's nothing  at walking distance except for a small and simple restaurant.
Of course buses are running every day.
We were there in November during hurricane Otto. No damages in Linton. Several damages and boats sunk in Portobelo. Apparently the first hurricane in Panama after 100 years.
Should you need contacts  just let me know.

Genoa halyard splice broken

Derick Gates

Ok then, the Genoa halyard splice gave way during the re-rigging process. How does one rig a new Genoa halyard?  Do we need to add the new line through the block and into the mast and the fish it out of the hole in the mast at the main boom level?  Will the end of the new halyard need a weight to drop it through the mast?

Anyone done this before?  All hints appreciated

I can recommend going to Cartagena which is a wonderful city, but I cannot recommend Todomar, the yard there. It is dirty and I believe not very secure because of all of the various contractors working there.

The yard in Shelter Bay, in my opinion is better and safer than anything in that area, although we only stayed in the water while at Shelter Bay. It is remote and that makes it secure. If it were in Colon, it would NOT be safe.

Hola Herb,
Shelter Bay Marina/Boatyard at the Atlantic entrance to the Canal seems to be a well-run, well protected, and secure operation.

Kristy is there for a couple of months at the dock.  The yard has a man checking on her weekly to flush the watermaker and top up the batteries for $75/month.

Re: Dessalator pump not working

Hi again,

It seems that the problem is that for the 24v motor the solenoid has failed, and for the 220v motor the capacitor has failed. Its seems quite coincidental, andI can only speculate that the problem for both was caused by a blocked pre-filter. I wonder if anyone could confirm?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Water Heater Hose Size on SM

Mohammad Shirloo

We ordered a new water heater plus all spares from the owner of a chandlery we met in Mytilini Marina in Lesvos Greece. Very nice, professional and resourceful person. Very reasonable prices (better than I could find on the net in US) Shipped the entire package for 15 Euros in 2 days to Samos Marina where we are currently. It is the exact model as the original, except that it has the mixing valve. I am working with him on other orders as well. I think he would be a good resource for parts in the Med.

We replaced the entire water heater. It took 6 hours total but we took our time and went slow. The removal, relocation and reinstall of the hydraulic pumps for the auto pilot ended up being a non-issue. A lot of extra hydraulic lines allowed the entire setup to be relocated on top of the engine and out of the way.

Now we have a brand new unit with all spares that hopefully we don't have to deal with for another 8 years.

As a side note, in order to reach the rear bolt on the water heater, the generator exhaust pipe had to be removed. Since I was following all the other discussions on generator exhaust pipe carbon buildup, I put an endoscope camera in the pipe and inspected all the way to the generator outlet. Everything looked very clean. I always try to run the generator at 60-90% load.

Thanks every one for the suggestions and information.

Respectfully;

Hi everyone,
I just heard back from QuickUSA. The pipes on their B3 Boilers are 1/2" BSP threads. They sell a kit to add a mixing valve for $120 plus shipping.

I still don't know the size of the yellow and black hoses used in the Amel fresh water system. Are they 25mm ID? Does anyone have a source for a similar hose in the US?

Thanks,

Dessalator pump not working

ya_fohi

Hi,
I have a Dessalator Duo 100. When I switch on the 220v motor the breaker trips after a bout 5 seconds. When I try the 24v motor nothing at all happens. In both cases there is no movement at all. However I can turn it by hand quite easily. I had thought it may have been a clogged 5 micron filter but changing this made no difference. I would be interested to know if anyone has a troubleshooting guide or a workshop manual for the pump as I'm assuming this is where the problem lies.
Thanks
Paul

If you have vinyl letters rather
than paint, you should try a heat gun. Not too hot to burn
the gelcoat.  The gelcoat under the letters will appear a
different color because the vinyl has blocked the UV. Clean,
compound, and polish before applying me letters.
This worked for me and hope it works for you.

Downwind sail recommondation

Alex Ramseyer <alexramseyer@...>

Sorry guys, my mother tongue isn’t English and I chose the exact oposite wrong word in my message yesterday.
I need to replace my downwind sail and wanted to ask the forum for recommendations.
I tend to stay with the AMEL system as is on AMEL54. Can anyone of you share which sail he recommends to buy in this case.

Do you know alternatives like parasail or others (what exactly?) Can you share your experience?
Would you do the same again?
Thanks in advance for your valuable advice.
