Thank you Oliver
We were motoring at about 6 knots speed in flat water. hitting a submerged breakwater with a lot of big granit blocks
We hauled the boat and the main impact is just below the sonic speed sensor, but the iron keel also toke some of the impact.
I can't find the inspection hatches for the water tank. I assume one might be below the front open  refrigerator, one might be below the combined fridge freezer but that one is fiberglass in and difficult to remove.
I guess there should also be one forward of the combined fridge freezer but has not located where to get in an inspect the water tank. Assume the forward inspection hatch is the most important one right now.

On second reading I realize that, in my original message, inadvertently I dropped a small but significant word, thus altering the meaning of the sentence.

The sentence should have read “a number of improvements he had not been consulted about”.

Sorry about that.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Repair

Beaute Olivier

Hello Paul,

I fully agree with Joel, this cannot be qualified as "cosmetic".
A few questions:
-What was your boat speed and were you motoring or sailing, and what was the wind speed? The damages are directly related to these data.
-Did you see the location of the impact from outside (diving) or did you get the boat out of the water? This area is critical and it makes a big difference if the impact is below the GRP keel/ballast junction or above (below the Sonic speed sensor or above).

Your surveyor (and you) will need to inspect the whole inside of the freshwater tank too, and the main mast chain-plates bolts (from inside).
Depending on the speed and if you were sailing or motoring, you will need to have the rigging inspected too.

Good luck in these bad days.

Olivier.

While I know you are inquiring about SS makeover, if anyone is interested in replacing with high quality vinyl (like Amel original), you can use boatgraphics.com (in Puerto Rico). Google it and call them. Felix is the owner and they have state of the art laser cutting equiment etc (I've been to his shop and it is impressive!) I had them make exact duplicates of the Amel logos on the vent covers as well as my boat name etc They fit perfectly! He has data saved in his computer & can duplicate exactly the logos, Just tell him my boat name Liahona , Gary Silver. As I recall even though he bundled multiple items for me it wss something like $35 per side and he will ship anywhere. Great customer service, great quality product. Gary Silver

Hello Paul. First, call your insurance company. They will probably want you to use someone local. You don’t have to but the costs to get him there and back could be on your account. Some are glad to have an Amel experienced expert. Some just think it will add to the cost of repairs ( and they are usually right ). Paul Anstey is at 954-270-1949  pansteymindspring.com. I will send him my first response to you. Send me some photos and maybe I can put you more at ease. Good luck with the process.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Repair

Hi Paul and sorry about your bump. You are starting off with bad advice as anyone who says this is cosmetic is wrong. Cosmetic is abrasions and deep scuffing. Anytime you have structural delamination, particularly in a structurally important area such as that area on your boat with damage, a deep and intensive look at the entire structural system for the boat is required. Why? Amel boats are of monocoque construction. Google it. Essentially, the boat can be both lightweight and strong too because all elements of the construction are joined together structurally and depend on each other much more so than in a regular/conventional production built fiberglass boat. A strike in this area can produce incredible loads to the primary structural grid that supports the keel and the mainmast. The force from the impact can be transferred to other structural elements not near the impact site. At the very least, get an Amel owner who is very familiar with the structural details of the Super Maramu to have a look. I would also have someone who knows sophisticated fiberglass laminates to use  a borescope to look in areas around the bulkhead under the main mast and adjacent areas to see if any stress cracks, or worse are present. You should get expert advice from someone familiar enough with Amel boats to screen potential repair facilities to make sure your boat will be repaired properly. Olivier would be your best solution by far. The surveyor I use in the United States used to build fiberglass boats in England and has surveyed at least 400 Amel boats for me over the last 35 years and would be a good second choice as we have seen some boats that were damaged and also ones that were poorly repaired by yards unfamiliar with Amel’s or who just didn’t really give a damn.

If you send plenty of good, high resolution and well-lit photographs, I can make a preliminary report to help you decide what to do next. It is important to do things correctly and I have seen the exact same situational damage before and I have seen some really awful repairs and I was involved in two good ones with the help and guidance of my colleagues in La Rochelle.

Be careful until you know the true extent of the damage. Not trying to frighten you, just to let you know your first prognosis might be suspect.

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hear you have some damage to Kerpa. I'm certainly no expert, but if you have some de-lamination on a bulkhead, I would consider finding a good surveyor who knows Amels that can do a very through inspection. I'm not sure what yard would be the best in that area, but I know Kent usually recommends Deltaville, as they have some experience with the Amel.

Best of luck getting it sorted out quickly, and continuing with your summer sailing.

The best surveyor for Amels in the world is Olivier Beaute <olivierbeaute@...>. He is located in France and travels anywhere.

The primary difference in Red Line Super Maramus is cosmetic, with the use of colors designed for the 54. This included leather trim colors, boot stripe and rub rail. There are a few more differences because suppliers to Amel changed models. For instance, Dolphin chargers in all Red Lines are a newer model that that used in most Super Maramus, however some Super Maramus produced before the Red Line also had a later model Dolphin charger. Some Electronics in Red Line are also different, such as NavNet for Furuno chartplotters...these types of small changes occurred throughout the production years. BTW, the last 54s were "Sand Line" models because the leather boot stripe, and rub rail colors of the 55 were used on the last 54s.

Are you looking to have your Maramu surveyed, or looking at another Amel?
