Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Mystery Pasta Bug [1 Attachment]

Hi Alex,

That looks like a grain weevil or wheat weevil. They can eat through plastic bags to get to food. They like pasta, rice and anything with flour.

Any type of household bug spray will kill them but it will take a few treatments since you probably some that are not yet hatched.

We store our pasta in plastic airtight containers: https://www.amazon.com/Biokips-Storage-Spaghetti-Noodle-Container/dp/B06VWPWQP9/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1496079860&sr=8-4&keywords=pasta+container

On the bright side, they are harmless and probably a good source of protein if digested.

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

Mark

Dear Amelians,

I found this bug (attached picture)  in several pastas on my boat. They were even inside sealed plastic spaghetti packages that were inside a separate plastic box. It's not the first time I see them, but I have no clue where they come from and how they grow. They only seem to like pasta...

Does anyone of you know what it is and how to avoid them?

I also heard they were a protein source, but I will seek it elsewhere…

Not sure if Alex’s bug are weevils, I had some they had wings, and actually came from the store (as since the rat I now store my food in air tight (Pelican) cases).

Alex,

Bad luck. We had them in Brasil. Probably weevils. One
magazine I read recently suggested that they can eat through
plastic bags.
Just have to dump all the offending bags and go over
everything lots of times with a vacuum cleaner. The ones
that escaped used to get stuck in the fuzzy lining in our
lockers

Mind you, they do say that they do add useful protein to
a pesto sauce.....

Good luck !

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] MPPT solar regulateur

Mark Erdos

Hi Thomas and Soraya,

I am not sure how close the 53 is to the 54 but it think you could do the same as I did. I am assuming you have the solar panels mounted aft on an arch? Is so, consider mounting the MPPT in the ceiling area above the mid-ship bunk in the passage way leading to the aft cabin (where there is access to the winches). It is easy to run cables through the aft lazarette though the cabinets in the aft stateroom into the fore mentioned area. Also, it is an easy run from this area down through the cabinet to the battery compartment.

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

Mark

Hi Amel Solar users,

Where did you install your MPPT regulator?

We are looking to get a MasterVolt "scm60-mppt-mb" that would work with 3*300W / 39V (Voc) panels in series but I'm concerned it is quite tall (400mm/15.7inch) and needs to be installed vertically.

On the plus side it is MasterBus compatible like the rest of our system, so easy to integrate and monitor.

Any advice on the best location inside an A54?

Dear Bill,
thank you for sharing all your valuable information. The size of the washing machine is the same that you mentioned on the AMEL 53. So I think it comes down to finding a way to get it (currently in Martinique but in Grenada for the HS). I'm not in a hurry as this is not a critical part.

The following will likely help you find a clothes washer replacement for either an Amel 54 or a Super Maramu 2000, and possibly other Amels since Amel has typically used house hold washers:

Here are links to some photos in the photo section of the Amel Owners Group. These photos are from an ad by www.unieuro.it

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/amelyachtowners/photos/albums/911367118/lightbox/876040189?orderBy=ordinal&sortOrder=asc&photoFilter=ALL#zax/876040189

The clothes washer in a SM2000 is a standard EU size which is 85X40X60cm (HxWxD). I have not seen a size for the front loading washer on the 54.

When we were in Barcelona Spain there were about 6 or 7 choices of brands/models that would fit perfectly. We bought a Bosch Series 4. The model number plate is attached to this email.

Here is a link to Unieuro's current washer offerings:

I am sure that you can find a freight forwarder that can work with Unieuro, and you may be able to find the right size for an Amel 54...I wish I knew the size.

BTW, our clothes washer was working fine when we replaced it at 13 years old. We replaced it for two reasons: it was old and we were in a part of the world where replacement was easy. Consider this if you are in the EU and about to depart.

If someone is successful in arranging purchase and shipment using a freight forwarder from EU to North America or the Caribbean, please share the details with everyone here. Details like contact names, phone, costs, etc.

Eric,
IP 55 is an international standard for water ingress.  55 means  essentially very limited protection.  COS is cosign for motor efficiency rating. For instance a 200 kw  rated motor with a COS of 0.87 would be 95% efficient.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Procedure to unfurl and fuel the mizzen on a SM

I would also add that the mizzen boom should be perpendicular to the mast when furling. If the aft end is higher, it won't furl evenly and will get stuck.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] I am also looking for the watermaker lift pump

Hi Eric;

We replaced the LP pump on our 150L/hr last year. We ordered it direct from Desallator In France. Here are the specs on the face plate:

IP 55
0.30 KW
COS 0.87
230 V
2.7 A
50 HZ
CB 10 microF 450 V

Let me know if this helps or if you need additional info.

Eric,

I changed mine. This is the pump the folks at Costal Climate recommended. You can save yourself about $100 if you buy it on eBay.

It is an easy install and the foot print is similar to the Calpeda pump. March pumps have a great reputation. The thing I like about it on an Amel is the saltwater end is all plastic (nothing metal to bond to the Amel system). On the Calpeda pump, I am not sure it was entirely in tune with the whole Amel bonding/grounding design. I started to poke about on the Calpeda one day with a volt meter and picked up stay current on the pump. Soon after that it crapped out and I decided to add the March pump. It has been running for 2 years with no issues. I also purchased a frontend repair kit (includes seals and a replacement magnetic impeller)

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

Mark

I saw that some people changed their AC water pump to a March magnetic drive pumps.

What model was used.

Does anyone know the specifications for the lift pump for the 160 LPH watermaker pump or a good substitute?

Eric,

Brava has the 160 Lph Dessalator watermaker.  By "lift pump" should I assume you are referring to the low pressure pump that feeds the high pressure pump?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Oil leak on the "c" drive

Bob Grey

Hi guys, having pulled the top of my C drive apart to replace a shaft, when you replace the lip seal, it has a mating wear bushing in steel that also acts as the spacer to tension up the bearings. I replaced this also when I reassembled the unit. I have the Engineering drawing of the assembly if anyone wants it.

Paul,

The big hose that connects from the C drive to the hull is open to the sea. Be careful if you play with that.

You would only get sea water if this is leaking.

If your C drive is like the one on my Yanmar , the big bracket is held on to the C drive with 4 bolts.  There is no oil there.

Check  the hoses from the expansion tank of the C drive.

If all is good then you probably have a leak from the very large lip seal on the C drive . It is in the sail drive facing the engine. I would look under the sail drive towards the engine and see if there is any evidence of oil leaking there, If so it would probably be the big lip seal. To replace that lip seal you would have to move the engine forward and disconnect the coupling from the C drive from the coupling/transmission.

I just replaced that lip seal on Kimberlite.

Thank you

We have eliminated the oil from the engine, which was my first choice of source. We do have to fill more oil on the reservoir above after ca 100 h.

Will see if the allen screws are all tight and if it breath from the oil reservoir
