Re: Anchor washdown pump replacement
Got answer from Jabsco today,
"There is the possibility of the pump leaking if the diaphragm fails but the hull fitting the pump is connected to should have a seacock which should be closed when the pump isn’t in operation." So I will change to another pump, thank's for making me aware of the issue. Paul on SY Kerpa SM259

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
My experience is that the C Drive takes almost 9 liters. The C-Drive has been modified by Amel at least once which may account for a slight variance in capacity. The Amel-printed instructions state 9.5 liters. It is possible that the "boat boy" that you hired spilled some oil into the gray water bilge, especially possible if he used no funnel. The hot wiring to the one sailor unit is intentional. It can be used, for example, to save the programmed radio stations. Olivier confirmed that a few months ago. However, we do not have the cigar lighter wired to the hot sailor. I agree that might be a good idea to change. Tom Peacock Aletes SM 240 Rock Hall, Maryland

JP, Steve, The Kunas threw the Panamanian officials out of San Blas last year. Unless things have changed, you'll have to go to Colon to check in. It's a PITA there as the best place to stay is Shelter Bay Marina, a 45min drive, and you have to go to 3 different places to complete the process. Best to get a driver who knows the process. Rick +507 6427 3044 was very helpful. He can also arrange for line handlers, lines, fenders, and paperwork for Canal passage. Plan on spending months in San Blas and Bocas Del Toro...INCREDIBLE!!! The Santa Marta stop is an effective entry into Columbia according to “noonsite”. Apparently, the Customs and Immigration in Cartagena is a PITA whereas the marina in SM will do all the work for you. For Eric and Steve, I am in Curacao and will be in SM 3rd week of Oct… then to CTG for 3-4 days departing for Porvenir (San Blas) on 4 Oct. Lets see if we cross paths. Re: Battery power off levers do not cut all power
eamonn.washington@...
I will give a few more details of the current connections. There are 3 Sailor units connected as follows:
- one switches off when the power levers are closed. This is the Sailor unit dedicated for the B&G Hydra units. - one switches off when the "Funk" switch beside the power levers is off (I assume this is Amel standard). My VHF is not connected to it, but I guess that it should be. - one never switches off, which has cigar lighters and various other things connected. This I don't like. I already had a USB chager in the cigar lighter start to smoke a month ago. VHF is currently on this too. Eamonn Travel Bug SM 151

Hi Steve and Liz, My girlfriends sister keeps her boat in Cartagena. I will get you the name of the marina in a few days. There is not much to do In Santa Marta while Cartagena Is an old city with much to do. Do you speak Spanish? Please email me at kimberlite@... so we can discuss Colombia and travels there. Hi Eric,
We were planning to spend about a month in Santa Marta while we did a few land tours. I had not heard of the black muck falling from the skies, and have to admit, it does not much appeal to me. Too bad, as it looks like a nice town, and very nice marina. Do you have any good suggestions for a secure place we can stay in Cartagena? Hope we can meet up with you while we are there, and thanks for the heads up on Santa Marta.

Battery power off levers do not cut all power
eamonn.washington@...
I bought Travel bug, SM 151, 2 years ago and am the 4th owner. Each owner made modifications and I am now unsure what was original and what was modified in some cases. I am anchored in a gale for the last week so I took a detailed "look" at all of the wiring, with the aim of freeing some space in the overfull conduits. (I was able to remove over 20 cables.) Now I noticed that when the 2 power shutoff levers are in the off position, that I still have 12V power in one of the 3 "Sailor" units and everything connected to it. I could fix it by moving that sailor connector away from the battery side.
Did Amel intend this or is it a wiring mistake? The issues I see are, (1) if there is an electrical fire then I would not be able to kill all the power, (2) if I lay up on the hard and am not connected to mains there could be a power drain on the batteries. The advantage I see is, if there is a fire you could kill the power but have the VHF connected still for the mayday (but I have a handheld VHF in the grab bag...). Thanks Eamonn Travel Bug SM 151

Hi Steve, I see you are planning to go to Colombia. The Santa Marta marina is one of the nicest ones I have ever been in. Unfortunately across the bay is a coal fired plant. In 3 days you will be leaving footprints in the soot on deck . I did not know this and left the boat there for a month. When I returned everything to windward looked like a black flocked Elvis mural. It took 3 days to remove the sails and wash what we could. As we headed to Guadeloupe , when it rained, it rained black from the high rigging- Moral skip Santa Marta. Cartagena is a better choice. When you get near Colombia , please drop me a note as I am there about every 6-8 weeks on business and would love to meet. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Bill,
It is a fairly efficient machine, and really starts to shine above 7 knots, but does OK at 6. I was fortunate to find one used, and with someone else having engineered a very solid bracket. We are currently in Hawaii, but will get some pictures up on the forum when we return to Aruba and start preparing Aloha for our next leg to Columbia. It is only a 2 minute process to remove the unit from the transom, and store it in the aft lazarette. I think when you see our install, you will realize it does not hinder your access to the transom at all.

Hi all, thanks for the reply.
As always you are spot on. I did the job myself apart from filling the reservoir with the 8lts which was done by the local boat boy. I believe there was some air locks as I've since put in about another 2ltrs. I ran the engine in gear forward and reverse on the dock for about 30-40 min and no drop in oil and no milkyness. I can now breath again.

Steve,
I for one would love to see pictures of the hydrogenerator installation on your boat. My old boat had a water generator of a different brand, and with it as the only charging source, on a 21 day crossing from Hawaii to California the batteries never dropped below 95% SOC--and that was on a boat significantly slower than a Amel. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Boston, Mass ---In amelyachtowners@..., <flyboyscd@...> wrote : Hi Bill, On our older SM, we have a single 100 amp Mastervolt charger which works well, and yes, we upgraded the wiring size. The charger does draw about 10 amps when it is putting 100 amps into the batteries in bulk mode, but usually steps down to a lower rate quickly, as I never discharge my batteries too far. Because we are circumnavigating on our boat, redundancy is very important, and we carry a spare 80 amp mastervolt charger. I can change the chargers out in under 30 minutes, and never have to live with a greatly reduced charging capacity. It's a great solution for us, but a little more expensive than having a 2nd 30 amp charger. We also installed a Watt and Sea hydro generator on the transom while in St Maarten last spring. We made a 3 day passage to Bonaire after installing the unit, never ran the generator, and arrived with full batteries. For anyone considering long passages, I think this is a great option. If anyone is interested in the installation, I can provide some pictures in a couple of weeks when we return to the boat. These are expensive gadgets, but we were fortunate to obtain a lightly used one from a friend in Martinique along with the custom made stainless mounting bracket for the SM. Sorry for the thread creep, but it seemed to fit in with charging the batteries. Steve Davis Aloha SM72 Aruba

Hi Stephen, Last weekend I bought a new mast top unit (wind sensor) on Ebay. I noticed one new for sale from a seller in Spain. The seller is living very close to where my boat is now (Ria de Arousa in Galicia NW Spain) and delivered it the next day. It turned out that he was a former dealer for B&G in Spain and he even installed the new unit for me. Now the system works fine. It turned out that the pcb of the original unit failed. I am very happy with the new one. It is about ten years old but came new out of the box. Kind regards, Willem SM #351 "Kavanga"

Island Moorings started kicking out liveaboards last year in favor of the large sport fisher type boats. They didn't fare well. Nothing is hurricane proof. Many of the big sport fishers are sitting on my pier here in CCM. The ones that got here before the storm are ok. The ones that are showing up today have damage. I think we had wind here of 80+ knots. Nothing like Rockport. Selective damage there because of the swarms of twisters embedded in the eye wall. Our favorite little aquarium there, where we used to take our dogs is gone, as are many other things. James Sterling S/V Longbow SM2K #418 Sent from Yahoo Mail. Get the app

Hi James,
It is good to know that the CCCM fared well. I understand they did a few improvements there in recent years. We kept a Cheoy Lee there many years ago and at the time it was fixed old wooded docks. When we were there I never thought the sea wall would be high enough if the big one hit.
I am curious if the Port Aransas Marina and Island Moorings Marina had damage. Port A is pretty exposed and I cannot imagine how it looks today. When Island Moorings was built they were selling it as “hurricane proof”. Both of these were close to the eye.
Cindy’s parents have a house in Rockport on the bay-front. Remarkably it is still standing. Although they did suffer some water damage due to a window being blown out. It didn’t break. The whole frame was pulled out. It looked like a tornado hit their living room. Many of the houses on their street were reduced to a pile of rubble. Her dad just completed a new dock. He is an engineer and…. well… engineers being what they are …the dock survived completely unscathed.
Wishing you a speedy recovery with your health.

Longbow, in the Corpus Christi City Marina was extremely fortunate. At the last moment the eye of the storm turned and hit Rockport 25 miles away. Rockport, a lovely little place, was almost obliterated. There are many in the Corpus Christi and surrounding area still without power and everyone is helping each other. Longbow rode it out in the slip and her lines stretched to the max. We had left her when they called Cat 3 never expecting to see her again. To make a long story short, she didn't have a scratch on her. I'm extremely grateful because I had suffered a heart attack the week before and had just gotten out of the hospital.
