David,

I write this email with a "heavy heart" because as a new owner of a Super Maramu, you have had one of the worst experiences that I know of. I am certain that you will leave this experience in your wake as your Super Maramu takes you to some amazing places in the world.

That said, I have to say the following because I also am pissed off. Your "expert mechanic" is somebody who thinks he is really smart, claims to know Amels, and is a member of this group, even though he does not own an Amel. He has again screwed things up for another Amel owner...this time it was your turn.

He has supplied you with a wear bushing that was made by someone other than Amel. While attempting to remove the 3 lip seals, he has scored/scratched the inner wall of the cavity that the outside of the lip seals "seal-to," and amazingly scored/scratched the roller bearing.

The cavity walls should be completely smooth and coated with waterproof grease before you begin to press the seals in place. I use emory cloth to clean the cavity wall each time I do the job, but, all I am removing is salt residue and debris. Hopefully the team at Amel Martinique will have a solution for the extremely poor installation attempt made by this extremely poor excuse of an Amel mechanic.

I will not post the name of the person who performed this work for David, but if anyone wants to know who this person is, write me at svbebe"at"gmail.com. In my opinion, he should be avoided in the brokerage of Amels and the maintenance of Amels. I am sure that some will differ with my opinion, and my opinion could be wrong.

I am not sure why anyone would buy a wear bushing from any source other than Amel. It is 149.80 euros from France and 30% more if you pick it up at Amel Martinique. We all are going to find reason to order from Amel and we all should have on hand at least 1 set of everything needed for wear bushing service and bow thruster service. I normally have 2-3 sets. Plan your parts orders so that they are less frequent and you will save on shipping costs.

Does Amel make a profit on these parts? I certainly hope so and I hope that it is enough profit and enough of us order from them so that they will continue supplying parts for as long as we own our boats. Everyone, please consider this when you look to save a few bucks!

Hi Ben,

soon after we bought Ocean Pearl (8 years old) we had horrible screeching from the furler. Anyone in the cabin when it was activated jumped in fright at the noise. I investigated and found the grease in the gearbox had gone hard and was at the peripheries and not on the gears. Like you I found no lubrication system. I pioneered putting grease nipples in the side of all three furler gearboxes, main furler, outhaul and genoa furler. This can be done in situ with care. I put grease nipples in. Others have put removable plugs. Either works and I regularly add a few pumps of grease. End of problem. I did a post at the time with details and photos.

If you want details of how to do it in situ let me know and I will give details. It is not difficult. However some time it would pay to dismantle the gearbox to remove the old grease. Another furler noise problem. I had high pitched noise this year from the genoa furler. I had the fore stay down for another reason and took the opportunity to recoat the forestay liberally with grease ala Amel. No more noise. So simple. I used a full grease cartridge. Logically we should expect to do this periodically as the grease will not last forever.

When my SM #335  was 2 years old (now 13 years ago), my main sail furling gearbox did the same thing.  It turned out to be a broken shaft on the motor.  I can only assume that misalignment caused flexing loads on the shaft and it broke cleaning through.  The rough ends of the shaft inter-digitated enough that the drive still worked but a a slower than usual speed and with loud metal-on-metal screeching.  I wasn't there for the replacement as I was in Ft. Lauderdale at the the time but Joel's maintenance tech at the time, Ray Eaton  who is now deceased, took care of the replacement motor for me.  I recall that he said it was the first time he had seen that failure mode.

cross-thread issue is change the sleeve which screws onto
the Masthead Mounting Bracket and replace the 213 Masthead
Unit with one that is a combination of what I had and what
Pat sent me.

If you are going to sail south, you may want to use the rigger that Amel in Martinique uses and recommends. I could list dozens of reasons for visiting Martinique from French wine, French food and, of course, Amel and their Caribbean team. Oh, and Marina Du Marin is only about 580 euros a month including electricity. Contacts: Marina Du Marin marina-martinique.fr> and/or Marina Du Marin wanadoo.fr> Use both I know one works and one email does not, but I do not remember which one. Amel contact in Martinique is amel.caraibes"at"amel.fr

If you decide that Martinique is in your future (I recommend it), contact the owner of the rigging shop there: Gaëtan Rivet caraibe-greement.fr>. A complete re-rig will cost you 9032.34 euro ($9,568.87USD at 1 EUR = 1.05940 USD) EUR), which includes taxes and 3 days on the working pontoon at their shop. Also he charges 141 euro for a complete and well-done rigging inspection.

While we were there over a period of 2 months they averaged one Amel every 10 days for rigging work and most were complete re-rigs. I think that you will be hard-pressed to find more Amel rigging experience.

I heard of one issue that one owner had with this shop, but I want to stress that Gaëtan was cleaning up a really bad job that someone in the US did on a Super Maramu in an effort to cut down the forestay so that they did not have to buy the special Amel turnbuckle that Joel mentioned in an earlier email. Everything turned out fine, but did not turn out exactly like the owner had planned. It is sometimes difficult to turn chickens inot eggs.

So if even go back there I would likely use the person that Mark just recommended.

there any reason to even consider having them made locally?
 Assuming again that I do go straight to Acmo for new
rigging, how best do I vet riggers in the Ft. Lauderdale
area to install.  Joel, or others with knowledge of the
area, are there riggers I should know about that might be
more familiar with the Amel?

Tools required: Electric drill, grease nipple, threading tap (plug type) the correct size for the nipples thread. drill bit the correct size for the threading tap. I bought all together, then I was sure they were all the right size. Two wine bottle corks, some grease.

You will see that the nipples are in the cover over where the worm drive spline that drives the gear rotates.
This ensures that nice fresh grease is right where the main action is.

Process.. First remove wine corks from bottles and drink the wine, red or white is OK. (Joke)

There is a photo of my electric drill with a drill bit in it.
You will see that I have put wine corks on it. That is so when you drill in place you do not push through and damage the internal gears. Leave only enough drill showing to go just through the casing.
Start very short, then If it is too short, take a little cork off and try again.

I did the outhaul box while it was dismantled so put the nipple centre where the casing is at its least thickness. The main furler was done in place so you will see the nipple is off set. This is because the case is shaped around the worm drive and is thicker to one side. This ensured (being ultra careful) that there was enough wall thickness for the threading plug to do its job. I placed the headsail furtler nipple centre as I was confident of sufficient wall thickness.

Drill very carefully, you do not want to push drill filings into the gear box. Put grease liberally on the drill so that the filings will stick to that. Like wise when you are using the threading tap put liberal grease on it to hold the filings.

Once you have drilled the hole use the tap to thread it. The thread on the grease nipple is tapered so do not thread too far in.. Stop too soon rather than go too far, you can always do a bit more if you need to. Screw in the nipple. Using a grease gun pump in the grease.

Do not pump too much grease in or you will push the seals out. As to whether the old grease will come out. In my case I had had the gearboxes apart and cleaned out so with fresh grease in there it was OK. I just add a little every month.

You could if you wanted too drill another hole opposite and above where you put the nipple, thread it and put a plug in. Just remove that when you are regreasing and the old grease will push out. But not if it has gone hard. I wouldn't worry about it, so long as we have fresh grease on the spline and gear.

soon after we bought Ocean Pearl (8 years old) we had horrible screeching from the furler. Anyone in the cabin when it was activated jumped in fright at the noise. I investigated and found the grease in the gearbox had gone hard and was at the peripheries and not on the gears. Like you I found no lubrication system. I pioneered putting grease nipples in the side of all three furler gearboxes, main furler, outhaul and genoa furler. This can be done in situ with care. I put grease nipples in. Others have put removable plugs. Either works and I regularly add a few pumps of grease. End of problem. I did a post at the time with details and photos.

Logically we should expect to do this periodically as the grease will not last forever.

When my SM #335  was 2 years old (now 13 years ago), my main sail furling gearbox did the same thing.  It turned out to be a broken shaft on the motor.  I can only assume that misalignment caused flexing loads on the shaft and it broke cleaning through.  The rough ends of the shaft inter-digitated enough that the drive still worked but a a slower than usual speed and with loud metal-on-metal screeching.  I wasn't there for the replacement as I was in Ft.. Lauderdale at the the time but Joel's maintenance tech at the time, Ray Eaton  who is now deceased, took care of the replacement motor for me.  I recall that he said it was the first time he had seen that failure mode.

The best guys in Fort Lauderdale, who have done all my Amel re-rigging work for several decades, are Nance  and Underwood. They are familiar with all Amel idiosyncrasies and have familiarity with all aspects of the rig and have done at least thirty or forty Amel boats. They have also done complete rebuilds of both masts and all furlers including rewiring and LED nab lights and complete refinishing/painting using chromate and alodine to obtain a better and longer lasting finish than the original coatings.
You can also get STA-LOC mechanical end fittings which are better than swages in every way except being slightly more expensive. Call Roger Underwood 954-764-6001. They also have an in-house solution to a better replacement for the unique turnbuckle on the head stay. 
These guys are good people and very competent.

Hi Ben,

I installed small nylon bolts on each gearbox and the Main furler and outhaul .

On the gearboxes I drilled and tapped them on either sided.

One high and one low. I pump grease into the gearbox on the low side and when it comes out clean I stop.

I use the grease gun adapter for the Autoprop to insert the grease.

I chose the small nylon bolts over the grease nipples as I could see the grease flowing out of the gearbox , and in addition I do not have any corrosion problems.

 

With the genoa the holes are on the same side (port)  and if you look at a drawing of the gearbox you will see

Where to put the holes. I do this twice yearly.

 

In addition I remove the outhaul shaft and coat it with high temperature waterproof Neva-Seize grease.

I do this twice yearly.

The outhaul shaft is especially important as if it gets stuck it is a royal pain to get out.

I also sanded down the outhaul key on the shaft a few thousands of an inch.

Hi Bob. It is considered bad form to kill the messenger bringing bad news. The tank in your boat cannot be removed without cutting it in pieces. It is made from 5086 H111 aluminum alloy. Two tanks will need to be fabricated to fit in the same space. I have confirmed this with Olivier. Sorry to have this news to give you. If you send me your email address, I can send you some free advice that will be worth much more than it costs.

 

Before  you Amel folks with an Amel 54 panic, there are extenuating circumstances which most probably led to the failure of the tank on this particular boat.

Yesterday I left the boat for several hours for a Thanksgiving day with family. On returning to the boat I found my nearly full tank of diesel all in the engine room/bilge. Fortunately, the original bilge pump broke a few days ago, Maud has parts on order, and I have not yet installed a back up, so an environmental disaster was averted. I had manually pumped out the bilge/grey water just before leaving the boat, so it was almost all clean diesel. I pumped it through the Racor filters back into the tank. When the level was down so I could see what was going on, there was a steady stream of diesel entering the engine room at the floor level in the far forward starboard corner. That is where all the large battery cables run starboard towards the battery box. This morning all the diesel is back in the engine room. Fortunately there is no diesel odor in the main cabin, attesting to the integrity of the watertight compartments in the Amel.
Some assumptions I am making that I would appreciate confirming, or correcting.
I assume the tank has only the openings on the top, and one outlet at the bottom that goes to the Racor filters. If this is true, I must have a leak in the tank, or possibly a leak in the outlet pipe at the bottom, that is presenting itself just forward.
If I have a leak in the tank it must come out to be repaired. Is it possible to remove the tank in one piece out  through the engine room hatch? Has anyone ever done that that can offer advise such as what to remove, how the tank is secured in the boat, etc?
Any advise is very much appreciated,

Hi Ben:  

When my SM #335  was 2 years old (now 13 years ago), my main sail furling gearbox did the same thing.  It turned out to be a broken shaft on the motor.  I can only assume that misalignment caused flexing loads on the shaft and it broke cleaning through.  The rough ends of the shaft inter-digitated enough that the drive still worked but a a slower than usual speed and with loud metal-on-metal screeching.  I wasn't there for the replacement as I was in Ft. Lauderdale at the the time but Joel's maintenance tech at the time, Ray Eaton  who is now deceased, took care of the replacement motor for me.  I recall that he said it was the first time he had seen that failure mode.

soon after we bought Ocean Pearl (8 years old) we had horrible screeching from the furler. Anyone in the cabin when it was activated jumped in fright at the noise. I investigated and found the grease in the gearbox had gone hard and was at the peripheries and not on the gears. Like you I found no lubrication system. I pioneered putting grease nipples in the side of all three furler gearboxes, main furler, outhaul and genoa furler. This can be done in situ with care. I put grease nipples in. Others have put removable plugs. Either works and I regularly add a few pumps of grease. End of problem. I did a post at the time with details and photos.
< span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1480146105107_4987">If you want details of how to do it in situ let me know and I will give details. It is not difficult. However some time it would pay to dismantle the gearbox to remove the old grease. Another furler noise problem. I had high pitched noise this year from the genoa furler. I had the fore stay down for another reason and took the opportunity to recoat the forestay liberally with grease ala Amel. No more noise. So simple. I used a full grease cartridge. Logically we should expect to do this periodically as the grease will not last forever.
