Re: Yanmar 100HP Fuel Pump maintenance-free?

Craig Briggs

Hi Francesco,

I think you may be asking more of a philosophy question than an engine maintenance one :-)

Then again, nothing is maintenance-free forever. There are some signs of overhaul being needed, though. My Perkins developed an unstable rpm at about 4000 hours and I had the pump rebuilt, since I was rebuilding the rest of the engine myself anyway. (The injection pump is not a DIY job.) The shop reported that there was a good deal of internal corrosion from water having entered the system (a prior owner, I sure) and it would likely soon have resulted in a run-away situation with a failed governor.

I'm now up to 7500 hours and it seems fine. With the pristine way you keep Peregrinus I would assert you're nowhere near a (costly) overhaul of the pump,

Cheers,  Craig SN#68

Looking at the Yanmar "Operation Manual", there is no mention of maintenance of the fuel pump, nor of any maintenance adjustment.

In the "Periodic Checking List" page of the Yanmar "Service Manual", there is no mention of maintenance of the fuel pump, nor of any maintenance adjustment.

However, in the Yanmar "Service Manual", there is a section called "Overhaul", and it says the fuel pump should be sent to a ZEXEL (the manufacturer of the pump) service center, and there are several pages of parameters and maintenance items for the fuel pump.

So, it seems the fuel pump is a maintenance-free item, except when you overhaul the engine.  Is this correct?  Is there any preventive maintenance for it, or is this a sort of a live and let die kind of component?

We you say "fuel pump" are you referring to the lift pump or the injection pump?

Re Porter's scale.

I have the Iridium external marine antenna installation (2015).  The antenna is located aft, port side, where Amel used to install the GPS antenna.  My findings:
Iridium Go at the Nav station with native antenna: 3/10 in connectivity
Iridium Go at the nav station hooked to Iridium antenna with adaptor: 8-9/10
Iridium Go with native antenna under bimini with flexible solar panels: 6/10
Iridium Go with native antenna on side deck, handheld: 8-9/10

I have exactly your setup.
Installed, older iridium phone, and New iridium go with adaptor.  My findings:
Iridium Go at the Nav station with native antenna: 3/10 in connectivity
Iridium Go at the nav station hooked to phone antenna with adaptor: 5/10
Iridium go with native antenna outside: 8-9/10 in connectivity.

The ratings are my subjective opinions based on now a good bit of use.

Take home message: the older sat phone antenna is convenient, but not as effective as I’d like and often frustrating.  I’ll probably buy the dedicated Go antenna.

I’d love to know if this mirrors your findings as I know of no way to actually test the older antenna to see if it’s “good”

Best of Luck!

I also had a sat phone installed. However I ordered the marine kit for my go phone. The coaxial cables are completely different. The one supplied with the go and the go antenna is an extremely low loss cable. It is thick and stiff but was able to get it to the shelf on  the starboard side of the companionway. I always get a good connection to Iridium with this cable and antenna.

Courtney,

If the existing sat phone is an Iridium phone, the antenna is most likely compatible, although there might be a cable adapter needed.

If the existing antenna is from some other satphone system operating in other frequency bands, I do not have any knowledge of the chances of it working.

Same as most the others on this thread. The clothes washer is excellent, quiet and we hang the washing to dry. It is such a pleasure to have that really good Thompson washing machine on board. We love it!

Todate, we have never yet turned the dishwasher on, as we prefer to simply wash the dishes by hand.

Thanks Bob,

Do you have the BOWMAN part number for the heat exchanger?
If they're only $160, I should maybe replace the whole thing just to be sure?
Or at least to have a spare.

Exactly, when you clamp the new rubber reducers on, it is important to be careful not to tighten them too much.  I'm sure you know this but I thought I would get it in the posting for anyone referencing this in the future.

Related, the exchanger is one of the first things downstream from the strainer to check for obstructions.  When the rubber is removed and replaced for inspection it is important not to overtighten.  The exchangers only cost about $160 or so, but the leakage of saltwater into the transmission can be much more costly.
