That's disappointing to hear Porter.  I just added new fixed antenna because of that same experience without it.

Porter McRobertsQuestion on this topic please for Iridium Go users:

Are used him go both with its own and Hanna and then also plugged in to an existing iridium satellite phone antenna.

Regardless of the antenna used I find that it takes sometimes multiple times even up to 10 or more before my login to the Mail and download is successful. It may take some times 30 to 50 minutes of failed attempts before I get a connection and am able to download the mail.

Sometimes I get so frustrated I just simply abandon the task and come back to it later as it may take that amount of time – 30, 40, 50 minutes of attempting and then I abandon.
Am I an outlier? Or do others also have this scenario?

We have been using our Iridium Go for over 2 years, and would not leave home without it. We have the external antenna, have it hard mounted at the Nav station, and rarely have connection issues when offshore.

We use it with predict wind, and with sailmail to get weather and email. Anytime we are off the grid it is our primary email, and we text with it as well.  Since we are headed across the Pacific soon, and it will be used constantly, we have the unlimited data plan. I have found that both the PredictWind service and the the email and texting has improved in the couple of years we have been using them. The unlimited plan also gives us 150 minutes of satellite talk time a month, which has been invaluable when needed.

If you plan on spending a lot of time on longer passages or off the grid, I think it is the most economical and reliable system out there.

Hi Guys I’ve had an Iridium Go for 3 years, worked great for sms and Voice on my IPhone and IPad, I’ve just tried to add data and use the iridium Go Mail app, for email and pedictwind grib files but it refuses to connect to data, I’ve followed all the recommended procedures but the data call drops out and won’t connect after 30seconds. My sim supplier seems stumped and washed his hands, any advice?.

Bill,

No I don’t. If the bar signal in the app represents the bar signal of the iridium it can be tens of minutes of waiting before I get above 3 bars (3/5) which is when I do get success. That’s the issue. Perhaps connecting to the previous owners existing iridium satellite antenna with the iridium go antenna converter doesn’t provide the best coverage. I have the iridium mounted under the Nav station and connected to he old antenna.

Anyway to test to see if the antenna is good?  Bill Rouse?  Any thoughts?

Perhaps bringing the iridium top sides is the way to go.

I’ll test it out.

Appreciate the help!

Thanks

We've used the Iridium Go since leaving the med a year or so ago. It's been flawless as long as there is a clear view of the sky (anchorage with sheer cliffs isn't great). At sea is the ideal condition for it. We have the unlimited plan and check emails, download weather and if I'm really bored on a night watch, use opera mini to "surf" the web.

We have the external antenna and leave the whole thing on all the time.

I've found the iPad app to be much much better than the Mac or PC version of the same thing.

I did order the Genoa with a foam luff, and I am lead to believe my sails should be identical to those on BeBe.  If you were happy with the sails from Qsails on BeBe, I should be very happy with Aquarius' new sails.  The sails are being released from customs tomorrow.  Hoping for the best!

Correct?.....  I am still with high hopes for this to work out.  :)  I too will inform everyone as to the outcome of my first sail purchase.  If everything fits as stated by Qsail, I will be a big proponent for Qsails.

Hello All,

I ordered a  110 percent  tri-radial jib from Q-sails this season.  I provided Q-sails with the dimensions of my original Genoa for the initial quote and then complete measurements for my boat which included the Genoa track positions.  Emrah Oge was my contact and was very prompt and courteous in responding to my emails.  The sail was completed on time and the price was as quoted.  When the sail arrived and was installed on the boat, my initial impression was that the workmanship looked good.  I unfortunately quickly found that have a significant problem with the sail since the sheeting position required to properly trim the sail falls more than a meter ahead of the forward end of my original Genoa track.  The sail will apparently require a recut to fit the boat.  I have emails in to Emrah Oge and he is aware of the problem based on his delayed initial response. I was told that he was having a server problem and certainly this is possible, however there also seems to be a delay in response to my more recent emails as well.  I won't speculate on the eventual outcome at this time since I want to give Emrah Oge adequate time to respond but I will provide a future update on this forum.

We use an Iridium Go that  we got through Predictwind as part of our weather package.  We have been very happy both with PredictWind and the Iridium Go hardware and service. We like the robustness and portability of the Go hardware.

We rarely make satphone voice calls, but when we have had the need, they went through clearly and without a hitch.

While underway, I typically download a full set of gribs each morning, and update our weather routing morning and evening.  I post a blog update most days, and get the occasional email. We have never had any overages charge to our account when using the $94 monthly fee.  I wish I could tell you what that includes for data totals, but I can't find it right away.

Hi Cameron.  I use the Iridium 9555 with their Axcess Point that makes a hotspot using the phone.  Connection time to download PredictWind is 2-3 min.  Connections without a dedicated antenna are often dropped, sometimes it takes me30 or more minutes to get the whole download, not all of which is charged for.  I understand others with the Axcess Point have added a permanent antenna and are very happy with the connections now.  I've just added one but haven't used it yet.  With the GO, you can't make phone calls, using the phone and AxcessPoint you can make calls and get data on your laptop or phone/iPad.

We didn't chose an unlimited plan, because we don't need it.  We only use the Go while we are underway offshore. We just don't have a lot of connecting we need to do while offshore other than weather.

The predictwind software connects directly to the Iridium Go, it doesn't use email. Typically it takes less than a minute for the routing file, and 4 to 5 minutes for the grib files. It varies a LOT depending on the extent of the data you want.

The blog updates are sent by email.  200 words, just 2 or 3 minutes, if that.

The Iridium Go does not need an external antenna IF it has a clear view of the sky.  Most people install it at the nav station so it can be connected to power full time instead of using its internal battery.  If the box is below deck you will need the external antenna for a reliable connection.

You didn't go for the unlimited data plan ? What was your reason ?
I gather you are downloading the email routing files from Predict wind as attachments??
Typically how long does it take to download them ?
Are you getting the Grib files the same way ?.....again how long to download them ?
You update your blog...on the internet or is it an email service?
Typically how long does it take to post say 200 words ?
Do you have an external antenna ?
Sorry for all the questions...
I have been tossing up for a while whether to invest in Iridium Go or not.
