Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Battery Tester

Oliver Buhlert

Bill Rousse gave us the recommendation for using a digital Battery Tester to check our Batteries. Our buddy boat had a very professional and expensive tool on board and we checked the batteries before we bought them.
A few weeks later we got our new digital Batterie tester and we tested the Batteries with our „normal“ Batterie tester and from time to time as well with the professional one of our friends. I agree, that there are differences, but they are not huge. For our purpose a „normal“ Batterie tester is good enough.

Alex,

I recommend that you buy one of these or similar:  https://www.amazon.com/BA7-100-1200-Electronic-Battery-System/dp/B0015PI7A4

My dock neighbor is a Marine Electrician and laughed at me when I showed it to him.  However, when I tested 24 batteries (12 new, 12 old) the results this tester gave me were all within 5% of a "professional" battery load tester.  It's certainly "good enough" to let you know if you battery is good or not.

Hello Bill,
on PILGRIM SM#26 1990, I have and I replaced with Bonfiglioli gearboxes. I am quite sure Leroy Sommer can be a sound replacement providing you take care of the reduction ratio, interface with the electric motor and interface with the driving pulley. If I had not found Bonfigloili this is what I would have done.

Steve,

We'll surely see you on the hard at LMC!

We have no new stipulations from our insurance company about travel in the Caribbean.  When we check in with many of the specific places we stayed last year, we are finding they are coming back on line faster than we expected.

We have no desire to show up at a place and be an unwelcome load on the local infrastructure, but on the other hand if our business can help people get back to normal we are happy to endure a bit of inconvenience.

Jean-Pierre,

Is your mast head unit the original B&G 213?

If so, it is very unlikely that the problem is at the top of the mast because the wind speed and direction are independently generated and transmitted.  It is POSSIBLE a bad ground or power connection is the issue at the top of the mast, but there is a lot to check before you climb up there.

Furling Gearbox Differences

greatketch@...

For those of you who have more experiences with Amel's of different vintages... are there fitting differences between the Leroy Somer and Bonfiglioli gearboxes used on the Mainmast furling system?

Are they interchangeable?  Interchangeable with modifications?  Or just too different to try?

Thanks!

Jean-Pierre's MacBook Air <jgermain@...>

Hello Bill,

My boat is all Raymarine as, given its early number, the electronics were verily Stone Age… including a GPS receiver capable of only 3 SAT signals and could display only LAT/LON.

So my masthead unit is Raymarine as everything else in the Nav side of things.

Thanks for the pointers for trouble shooting.

Cheers from Santa Marta Columbia.

Hello Eamonn,

The C-Drive illustration is not too good, I wanted to redo it.
But I hope it will help you a little.

My Swim ladder is under water… I don’t know the condition… I keep that in mind.
For info, mine was the longer one.

The list of the spare parts is only the beginning… I still have many to list that I removed from the boat prior the Hurricane.
to come next, Spurs Rope Cutter (complete unit, kits, etc.) lots of disruptors, Jabsco toilet (Electric motors, seal, duck valves), lots and lots…

Sincerely, Alexandre

Cockpit table--old style Super Maramu

greatketch@...

We have an "old style" Super Maramu full cockpit table that we never use, and hope that someone can make good use of at least the unique hardware.  The whole thing is in excellent shape.

This is the solid wood table that does not fold up, but rather stores flat on the bulkhead across from the pilot berth. Newer SMs have the table that folds up to the back of the helm seat.

We'll be in Fort Lauderdale, for a few weeks, so if somebody wanted to pick up the whole thing there, they could.  Shipping the wood table top is likely to be prohibitive, but it could be easily reproduced locally. It would be easy to remove the hardware and send that for the cost of shipping.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Spade Anchor

My anchor is the S140 (30kg) spade anchor.  It sets first time always unless it is dense weed or rocky.  Spare anchor is a folded S140.

By the way, I recently had the opportunity to test a S240 (75kg) spade anchor in the bow roller ... it does not fit!

Re: Bilge Bonding strap connection to the keel - stainless steel or copper

eamonn.washington@...

That photo made my life a lot easier, thanks!  The tips regarding how to reach down to it (chain a few ratchet extensions together) and how not to lose the losened nut (double sided sticky tape) were also invaluable.

Within 24 hours of discovering the bonding strap had corroded away I had it replaced with a 40mm by 4mm stainless steel strap.  Why stainless steel?  Simply because that was all that was locally quickly available on my last day on the boat this year, and it should last beyond my lifetime.
