Jeff, I salute you.

The courage you showed going to sea in the face of a fierce hurricane is awesome, as is your confidence in your ability to read the hurricanes projected track and position yourself to avoid it. I find that incredible. It is one thing to pontificate safely ashore about tracks and avoidance methods. Quite another to back yourself and put to sea. Well done seems inadequate.

There are a number of lessons learned and later, I'll offer some suggestions that could be helpful to prevent tragedy for someone in the future. A few are items I plan to add to my equipment aboard, and I'm sure it will initiate a helpful discussion.

I just received a note from Jeff on his Amel 54.

He left the South west coast of Puerto  Rico before Maria and headed south. He encountered winds to 40 knots and seas 8-12 feet.

He returned to the marina and he was the only boat floating,. The buoys to the entrance were gone

Some boats floating and many piled up on the beach. He entered and tied up to the gas dock in 20 knots.

He did this all single handed.30 hours total time solo.

We have been looking for a place to do this for a long time...  we have our old raft, and there will be a crowd of Amel (and other) sailors around for the boat show...


We are at Bert Jabin's so we'll have room off the end of the docks. We are just a short water taxi ride from the boat show docks


We are thinking Sunday, October 8th in the late afternoon...  Of course, there is a chance that nothing will happen when we pull that cord, but that would be an interesting outcome in its own way!


Other logistics remain to be decided...

Hi Eric,

I built a panel out of plywood behind the batteries at the port side of the engine room. The high pressure pump is mounted on this panel. The 2 membranes (I have a 130 l / hour system) are mounted above the pump at the bottom of the port-locker (in the engine room). the filters are mounted also on the port side in the engine room, just behind the high pressure pump, under the mebranes.

the control panel is mounted under the sink in the galley, also the filter element that "enriches"the water that goes to the tank. I just added a Y-connection to the hose that goes to the manual fresh water pump below the sink.

salt water outlet of the high-pressure-pump goes to the manual bilge pump, I added a Y-connection there, so it just flows to the see and there is no need for an additonal through-hull.

I used the salt-water inlet from the aft-head, added a T-piece after the Trough-Hull. There is also enough space to mount the booster pump there, mounted it on a piece of plywood, coated with epoxy and glued there with Sica.  There is also a filter mounted there. The salt water hose goes from the inlet to the bathroom, I had to cut a small hole there at the bottom next to the waster basket, and then it goes up the channel to the mizzen and into the engine room (together with the radar... cables).

The installation needs no additional through hulls, no holes into the bulkheads...., you can install the complete system having the boat in the water.  I planned the water maker installation all summer long until I found this solution, and with that there is so much space that I could add another one if I would like to do so.

It really is a shame, as it is such a nice product, and the lighter weight makes it so much easier to handle. Unfortunately, with our travel plans, it just doesn't make sense. We did check on Plastimo re-packing stations prior to buying, and found it to be one of the better supported rafts.

Have you tried tapping the cap tubes with a pair of pliers or a small hammer. This is a common fix if it was working well and then just one day doesn’t cool. If only it was this easy, right?

 

Before you replace the guts, I would suggest recharging the coolant. I do this myself so it is just the cost of the coolant. If you need help, it shouldn’t cost too much to have a reputable repair guy do it. I would insist he vacuum pump the system prior to charging.

 

The old style condensing units are no longer made. I purchased a unit with a speed board so I no longer needed the Amel 2 speed switch. It is not an exact fit but is very close replacement. The main thing is it does fit under the cooler box in the same wooden mount. While I had the unit out, I wrapped the box with ½” blue foam-board (from Lowes). It added a little extra R-value. It was a really tight fit getting the box back in under the counter and I had to grease it a little bit to push it in. It think where this really helped was between the compressor and the cooler box. It didn’t make sense to me to have a heater under the cooler without insulation. We can keep our day cooler at about 34-36F with no issues in the tropics. Our Frigoboat refrigerator does not get below 48d F.  Any ideas for repairs please let me know.  Here's what I know so far:

1.      First we defrosted the refrigerator. We pulled it out and vacuumed the Condenser Coil, and replaced the filters, which were jam packed with dust. We reinstalled the frig under the counter, hooked it up and the entire evaporator plate was covered with frost quickly.

2.      There is no frost on the refrigerant lines after the evaporator plate.

3.      Between 1 & 2, per Coastal Climate, one can assume a proper refrigerant charge.

4.      The condenser coil fan is running.

5.      I've checked the front door seal with the “Dollar Bill” test and it seems tight. I also checked with an infrared thermometer and there are no cold spots.

6.      The compressor starts and stops. After running for perhaps 15 minutes, it got to 116dF on the surface of the compressor. That seemed warm but then it's a compressor.  The box temperature was still 48dF after the compressor stopped.

7.      This unit does have the “Master” control box (http://veco-na.com/images/Frigoboat_Master_Control_Box.pdf) connected to the standard Danfoss controller. It's set on 3.0 for compressor speed.

8.      I checked all the connections in the refrigerant lines and there is no oil leakage.

9.      I've been told that the thermostat is not the original, but it appears to be correctly installed. Coastal Climate Control told me that if the thermometer fails, it will not turn on the compressor so that's probably not it...

10.  The CCC diagnostic flow chart recommends a compressor suction test, but there isn't anyone in Brunswick GA/environs that is interested in doing that work.

11.  The only thing I'm left with is a capilary tube blockage or water in the refrigerant line freezing up, but then why would the evap plate frost up nicely?

12.  Since the compressor starts and runs and stops again, It must be something that keeps the compressor from cooling sufficiently. It could be:

1.      Thermostat or control box stopping the compressor to early. Does anyone disagree with the lady at CCC that the thermostat failure always causes the compressor to not start?

2.      Cap tube partially blocked creating a temperature/pressure differential reducing the evaporator temperature.

 

Any great ideas?

 

I'm just about to follow Mark (Cream Puff's) solution and just replace the guts of the refrigerator (compressor, evaporator, etc). If Mark reads this maybe he'll share his parts list?

Do not give anyone an out of service life raft if there is any possibility they might ever use it in a rescue situation. Plaintiffs lawyers would clean you out to your last cuff link if it didn’t inflate.

 

In 40 years of selling cruising sailing yachts, I have been trusted to ‘dispose’ of elderly out of service rafts on numerous occasions. Often would give to the Sea Scouts for demonstration s. Most inflated, two did not even begin to inflate, and one that had been thermally cycled a zillion times due to on deck storage inflated and promptly came apart at the seams. It was a Switlik, not quite ten years old.

 

Pretty sobering.

 

I like the three year service schedule/packed in nitrogen units that are stowed below decks when not underway.

 

Always step up when entering a life raft.

1.) Thermostat or control box stopping the compressor to early. Does anyone disagree with the lady at CCC that the thermostat failure always causes the compressor to not start? Yes, I absolutely disagree, assuming that you have the original OEM mechanical thermostat.

Since the thermostat controls how long the compressor runs and since the compressor is turning OFF, why don't you jump the thermostat terminals where they connect and see if you can get the fridge cold enough. 

BUT, my big question is how cold enough satisfies you? I do not think that the fridge will get any colder than 40F.

very good questions about handling rescure raft.
Some input from my side.
As a certificated rescure trainer I traind my students in different environments.
But first of all: Hopefully we never will encounter to enter the life raft, because we all own a safe and solide boat. Remeber the boat is stronger then you think.
1. When we have to abandon the boat, it will blast > 30 kn, big wafes, rain and night 😬
Often when the raft is put in the sea, inflated suddenly, its happen the raft is upside down.
We traind it with fully monture, Lifebelt, Boots, Watertight sailing anorak etc. To swimm it is not easy.
Even for a sportiv and healty man like me its challenging enter the raft. If the raft is capsized you have to turn it like when you capzised with a dinghy. For older peopel its really a challange.
We did curses in a swingpool and in the sea (light weather)
My sugestion is:
make once this survival training incl.
fire the rescure rockets, fire fighting etc.
Its worse all the money and you will be surprised.
But again, hopefully we will never need our life raft.
To Mark
your mentioned a 4 person life raft.
You would be very surprised to see how tinny a 4 pax liferaft is.
On Tamango I carry a 8 pax liferaft, ok its 45 kg , stored in the life raft  locker (SM)
but if you need it you will have enough adrenalin to put it out.

I will echo Bill’s comment but stress the repack issue. We inherited our Viking 4 person raft when we purchased Cream Puff. Each time we have had it recertified we are hit with an added “age charge”. The older the raft, the more expensive it is to repack. I think this is a scam to try to put the raft out of commission by making it cost prohibitive to repack. During our last repack we had to wait 8 weeks for Viking to deliver an inside light at a cost that would make you think it was built for the military. The company doing the repack was contracted with Viking so they could not use a substitute light. Only Viking’s stuff can go in a Viking raft.

 

I read an old article in Practical Sailor where they took rafts that were in date, had been repacked and were donated for the test. Of the 8 rafts they pulled the string on, only 5 inflated. The remaining 3 did not inflate because of human errors made while repacking. Two of them still had safety pins in the gas canister that should have been removed. Their recommendation was to watch while your raft is being serviced and repacked. The also recommended asking for a copy of the procedure and following the checklist as the work is performed.

 

When at the St. Petersburg Boat Show in Florida, I talked to a Viking Certified Company about letting me watch. I was talking to the owner of a private company dealing Viking rafts. The coporate Viking marketing person overheard our conversation from across the booth. She came over and jumped down my throat. She was incredibly rude. She ranted and raved about how Viking dealers were not allowed to have customers in the work area. She went on and on about how well they are trained and how I would cause a distraction. I told her about the article in Practical Sailor and when I said Viking was one of the rafts that did not inflate she went nuts on me. She got really angry. Cindy left. I followed Cindy wondering why Viking would let a person like this out in public. Later, the guy we were talking to called me and apologized. He told me I was welcome to watch the procedure and we set up an appointment. While I was in his shop watching the work being performed (not touching anything and not being a distraction), I noticed a representative from the USCG doing the same thing. His company did all the rafts for Coast Guard vessels in Florida. I felt good about the work being done correctly. He packed a multitude of brands and also sold flares etc. His prices on parachute flares were ½ the price of West Marine. He later told me that Viking was the most difficult manufacture to deal with and had unrealistic demands of their partners.

 

Needles to say, when we eventually replace our raft, it’ll not be with a Viking.

Of course the oldest joke in the marine business is you never see an unhappy liferaft customer...

 

Some things to look at:  

 

Does it fit where you want to put it?  Most people use the designed life raft locker on the Amel SM to hold a valise style life raft pack, although other places are possible. 

 

What is the required service interval?  Some rafts are still using a 1 year repack, and that gets really expensive, and also very much a hassle to find someone reliable if you are cruising more remote areas.

 

Talk to someone who runs a repack shop about what they would recommend.  They are the people with WAY more hands on experience with liferafts than anyone else.

 

I do not have anything magic to say about the individual brands, other than it was a real help to see them inflated at the boat show and imagine trying to transfer from the big boat to that tiny pod in a running sea... some were WAY easier than others.

The old Winslow still looks like new since it was stored in the air tight Pelican case, and we intend to pop it in Shelter Bay Marina, Panama in January prior to our canal transit. We thought we could gather all the cruisers interested, and have an in the water life raft training day. If anyone plans to be there in that time frame, you are invited.

Hi,

I did an advanced sea survival course with the New Zealand Coastguard. It ran over two days and as part of it we went to a wave pool to experience inflating and boarding a life raft. The wave pool was agitated but would be pretty tame compared to a storm situation. It was a six man raft so six of us jumped into the pool after the raft was inflated. Entry was not easy with the raft bouncing around.Any one movement impaired would find it hard and the first in had to help the others in.We were all strong agile men. There was inches of water in it by the time we were aboard and the six men were packed like sardines in a can. We fitted but shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip. 

There was one very important thing we learned a life raft is a last resort. Not one of us would want to subject ourselves to that if we could avoid it. The rule is: you dont climb down into your raft, you climb up into it. ie. if your boat is floating stay with the boat. Coast Guard told us most yachts abandoned at sea are found floating later. Another warning. In a storm dont deploy the raft early in case you need it and leave it bouncing around on its tether, we were told they spin around over and over and often break free and go gaily away bouncing over the waves. Of course we are talking about storm conditions here. Thought this may be helpful information provided to us by the NZ coast guard

It would be nice to see them in action (at a boat show?), see how hard it is to get aboard, etc.  Without that in-person look, I just chose what appeared to be a well equipped, stable looking raft.  I also have a well equipped ditch bag with extra EPIRB, VHF, flares, hand-pump desalinator, food, etc.  My sat phone and InReach will go into it in a pelican case.

In terms of getting rid of an old life raft, we found a local dive center that works with training airline crews and were able to use their pool facility to launch our old Zodiac and run through a number of drills with our young girls. It was really helpful and at the end of the day, the dive center was happy to hold on to our inflated raft for training purposes.

Frigoboat not cooling enough

Our Frigoboat refrigerator does not get below 48d F.  Any ideas for repairs please let me know.  Here's what I know so far:

  1. First we defrosted the refrigerator. We pulled it out and vacuumed the Condenser Coil, and replaced the filters, which were jam packed with dust. We reinstalled the frig under the counter, hooked it up and the entire evaporator plate was covered with frost quickly.

  2. There is no frost on the refrigerant lines after the evaporator plate.

  3. Between 1 & 2, per Coastal Climate, one can assume a proper refrigerant charge.

  4. The condenser coil fan is running.

  5. I've checked the front door seal with the “Dollar Bill” test and it seems tight. I also checked with an infrared thermometer and there are no cold spots.

  6. The compressor starts and stops. After running for perhaps 15 minutes, it got to 116dF on the surface of the compressor. That seemed warm but then it's a compressor.  The box temperature was still 48dF after the compressor stopped.

  7. This unit does have the “Master” control box (http://veco-na.com/images/Frigoboat_Master_Control_Box.pdf) connected to the standard Danfoss controller. It's set on 3.0 for compressor speed.

  8. I checked all the connections in the refrigerant lines and there is no oil leakage.

  9. I've been told that the thermostat is not the original, but it appears to be correctly installed. Coastal Climate Control told me that if the thermometer fails, it will not turn on the compressor so that's probably not it...

  10. The CCC diagnostic flow chart recommends a compressor suction test, but there isn't anyone in Brunswick GA/environs that is interested in doing that work.

  11. The only thing I'm left with is a capilary tube blockage or water in the refrigerant line freezing up, but then why would the evap plate frost up nicely?

  12. Since the compressor starts and runs and stops again, It must be something that keeps the compressor from cooling sufficiently. It could be:

    1. Thermostat or control box stopping the compressor to early. Does anyone disagree with the lady at CCC that the thermostat failure always causes the compressor to not start?

    2. Cap tube partially blocked creating a temperature/pressure differential reducing the evaporator temperature.


Any great ideas?


I'm just about to follow Mark (Cream Puff's) solution and just replace the guts of the refrigerator (compressor, evaporator, etc). If Mark reads this maybe he'll share his parts list?
