Rudolph and JP,

I am sorry that you had issues with Amel's rep in Turkey because I recommended them after they performed very well for me. They were recommended to me by an Italian owner of a 54. I used Emek in Turkey for many different things,, and if I were there today, I would use them. Like any business, there are strengths and weaknesses. And like any complaint or story, there are at least two sides to the story.

Social media and forums such as this are good for many things, but unfortunately a few differences can ruin someone's reputation. I happen to know more about a few complaints regarding Emek than I think most people know. There is one thing in common with most of the service oriented complaints and that is the owner's expectations were not realistic and in most cases the owner was absent. The owner's expectations should have been established by Emek, but regrettably it is the Turkish culture to say whatever you want to hear.

There is a significant risk for leaving your Amel unsupervised, even at Amel-owned facilities. I believe that when maintenance of any kind is performed on your Amel, you should be present and supervise the project. You have to remember that the workers hired by Amel, or any service provider, are, almost always, unschooled people with general mechanical ability that are expected to perform work on anything from toilets to generators. If you cannot understand this, maybe you should not own a boat.

There is nobody better qualified to ship parts for an Amel than SAV"at"Amel.fr. If you use another source, you are certainly taking a risk. The bow thruster went through several changes during the production of the SM and only the good people at SAV know the issues. Yes, their prices are higher, and yes, the air freight they use is more expensive, and yes, you take many risks in buying parts elsewhere.

I happen to know much more about a few complaints, but there are at least two sides to every issue, and I personally do not feel that this is the place to present them to you. But, if I were in Turkey today, I would use Emek for some things and like always, I would supervise the work, the same way that I do anywhere. By biggest problem is that I have nobody supervising me.

Ken we had the sails made in something called cruising laminate, substantially lower price than hydrant. I asked Mr oge if it was worth the extra. 30 % to have the sails in hydranet  and he said not really. I thought maybe better to buy new sails a little bit more often. Glad I did so as cutting/ design was not to our liking, we will probably buy new sails within a few seasons again.

Paul,

What was the material material used for your sails?  Aquarius will be fitted with Hydranet sails, and I hope (because Hydranet is not cheap) that they will be good for many years....

For info, We bought sails from Q sails about a year ago, but can't say that we are to happy with them,
They wrinkle a lot when being furled. The shape is at the best awerage. But the price was low. We Will not buy there again. I understand from the forum that other who have ordered from Q sails are pleased. Just want to give our view.

I agree very much with Bill.

I was at times very frustrated by Riza and his crew.
My AMERICAN expectations did not fit with the Turkish approach.... at first.  But. After waiting sometimes great lengths of time I have a simply beautiful 54-specific arch with 1000watts of solar pumping in every day. The welders here are shocked at the high quality and reasonable price offered by Riza.
Additionally I have a new washer. Sent from Italy to turkey   Repackaged and sent here- Fort Lauderdale. As you all know it’s easier to talk to Henri Amel than find a new washer for a 54 especially in the US.

So. My suggestions.
Approach with clear and well laid out expectations and time frame.

Be explicit when talking to Riza about what exactly you need and by when. Talk about what would happen if he can’t make the deadlines. And likelihood of making the deadlines.

I do not believe Riza intentionally deceives or is complicit in any shenanigans. But certainly I understand your frustration and clearly the Emek way needs a buffing if they want to be a major player supporting Amel owners as I think they could!  We are lacking for easy and inexpensive support!

Rule 2 in deal making.  Have the responsibly party repeat the deal three times in the conversation.

I like the follow up email too.

This is a tough scenario.

The best to you

We have been looking for a place to do this for a long time...  we have our old raft, and there will be a crowd of Amel (and other) sailors around for the boat show...

We are at Bert Jabin's so we'll have room off the end of the docks. We are just a short water taxi ride from the boat show docks

We are thinking Sunday, October 8th in the late afternoon...  Of course, there is a chance that nothing will happen when we pull that cord, but that would be an interesting outcome in its own way!

Other logistics remain to be decided...

I was fortunate to be able to offer it's use upon return to PR, to a number of people allowing them to reassure loved ones off island of their safety. A Blessing for all.
I want to thank those who made kind remarks towards me, and express my deepest sympathies for those who have experienced losses or damage to their vessels. I've seen the heartbreak here in Puerto Real firsthand, and spent days helping salvage valuables from vessels beached, holed, and, and awash, with my RIB. I was grateful to be able to help, knowing full well that if I had remained, I would have been in the same predicament.
To add insult to injury, there was looting of some of the boats in dire straits.
There are a number of lessons learned and later, I'll offer some suggestions that could be helpful to prevent tragedy for someone in the future. A few are items I plan to add to my equipment aboard, and I'm sure it will initiate a helpful discussion.
Later though, as I have a busy day with 4 boats up here.

Best Wishes to All,

I just received a note from Jeff on his Amel 54.

He left the South west coast of Puerto  Rico before Maria and headed south. He encountered winds to 40 knots and seas 8-12 feet.

He returned to the marina and he was the only boat floating,.. The buoys to the entrance were gone

Some boats floating and many piled up on the beach. He entered and tied up to the gas dock in 20 knots.

He did this all single handed.30 hours total time solo.

Congratulations to Jeff

Took them 13 months to deliver a new life raft which had been prepaid.  Same for a black water tank.  Their workers are useless and other than their SS specialist have no training or work ethics .. True bodgers!

Jeff

Good News!

I watched Jeff dock Spirit in TCI earlier this year. It was blowing really hard. He never touched a pylon.

With best regards,

Mark

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Jeff on Spirit and hurricane Maria

I just received a note from Jeff on his Amel 54.

He left the South west coast of Puerto  Rico before Maria and headed south. He encountered winds to 40 knots and seas 8-12 feet.

He returned to the marina and he was the only boat floating,. The buoys to the entrance were gone

Some boats floating and many piled up on the beach. He entered and tied up to the gas dock in 20 knots.

He did this all single handed.30 hours total time solo.

Congratulations to Jeff

Hi Joel,

I was speaking to Lewis Allen and he said to give you his best wishes.

He might be heading this way to make a passage with us.

Pull the Plug on a Liferaft in Annapolis!

greatketch@...

RSVP, please to greatketch (at) yahoo (dot) com

Hi,
I am having a problem with my dessalator water maker.

Does anyone have a photo of the (I believe) the left side of the electronics box showing the  manometer and pressure gauge taken from inside the  port locker.
I have photos of the electronics. I just am too lazy to lug the drogue and life raft out.i

Bill,

Thanks for your reply.  My understanding is that they should be between 34d and 40d.  Mine is not cooling below 48d and goes up to 52d.

Would a piece of wire attached to the T & C terminals be what you mean by a jumper?

Thanks, Duane
