Hi Dave,

The gypsy sits on a cone. If it encounters too much resistance it is designed to slip.

You might check to see if the chain in the locker is jumbled and kicked.

Subject: [AmelYachtOwners] Lofrans Tigres Windlass gipsy

Last season I found that my gipsy slipped despite tightening the wing nut down as tight as I could (used a few taps from a hammer at one point).  I've owned Celtic Cross for one season and I'm going to pull apart the windlass for routine maintenance using Alexander Von Uster's excellent maintenance photos.  The question I have is whether my gipsy is simply worn out and needs replacement or will the maintenance routine restore it to full functionality?  It's essentially a clutch so it looks like it can wear out eventually.

They sell many spares for Raymarine.
i have ordered several times in their webshop without problem.
they are very helpfull.
Ask them before ordering if it’s ok for your pilote engine.

Thank you everybody,
I meant the horizontal part but it is good to know that talcum helps on the rubber seal. I have anyway to re-varnish the wooden parts. Afterwords i will try the sliding tape

Re: Amel 55 fuel tank guage accuracy

Billy Newport

Edited

I have the tank cleaned and polished today. We pulled about 60 gallons out which matches the 1/4 level on the gauge. We're still unsure though as last time we were at 1/4, we added 106 gallons to what we thought was full and the gauge showed full but based on today that would only put 166g in the tank and capacity is 230 so maybe slow down fill and keep filling...

Also, we found when we removed the inspection hatch under the captain bunk, there was diesel in the center of the rubber gasket. The gasket is a full circle on my boat, not a ring so the fuel got up there somehow and pooled in the center of the gasket. I didn't find any fuel on the bunk itself happily but something that wouldn't happen with a ring gasket for example maybe. We ended up using a little sealant on the bolts and tightened it a little more, the bolts didn't seem very tight when we removed the inspection cover.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
I have been sanding, cleaning this door for months after the 2nd Captain put some teak stain on to make it look pretty. Building my muscles lifting it up and pushing it down.
The talc de toilette powder is great.
Really makes it worth reading all posts.

I'm in the process of replacing the shaft bushing on my SM. How do you make sure the drain plug with the large slot for the line cutter is allaigned and firmly tighten at the same time? I was thinking of adding two washers instead of one at the bottom of the drain hole to be able to compress and also allaigne. Further use the old fashioned lin and paste instead of Teflon tape.

The commutator looks fine so I've been trying to find the brushes. :)

Any ideas where I can get that?

Hi all,
I solved the problem of the excess friction of the vertical sliding part against the bottom rubber scraper with the application of common talcum powder, with the advantage of avoiding anything oily or sticky

Thanks to you all,

specially for the nose clip idea that I like the most.

So I don't need this part for an outboard motor.
When someone is around, I like to give it away.

I found also (again) a part like this.
Seems to be for sucking something like Glas, but from both sides.
After 2 years I still do not know what it is for.

Any ideas?

Martin (B),

How did your linear AP fail at 60,000nm? What specifically failed?

We had an issue where the brushes in the electric motor wore down to almost nothing. We swapped the motors from our rotary drive, which was barely used, to our linear drive and all is good now. Of course now I'm trying to find brushes for it and apparently Raymarine just wants you to buy a brand new linear AP!

Just curious what other failures others have experienced. Sorry for the thread drift.

Re: Another mystery parts question

Matt Salatino

It’s for flushing the outboard motor. You connect a garden hose to it and it clamps to the foot of the outboard so you can feed fresh water.

Re: companionway

I use a dry silicone like sailkote or a similar 3m product both on the rubber gasket on the vertical part of the companionway as well as the sliding hatch.

The hatch needs to be sprayed in the tropics twice a year.

It is used mostly for the foil tracks on the sails as it is not a wet lubricant and does not attract dust.
