As others have mentioned make sure you are satisfied with the particular coverage and exclusions attached to each policy offering.

I agree with Alen and I believe that Velos may be the best solution available today for Americans sailing across oceans. Write Velos at Insurance"at"velosgroup.co.uk and tell them that you have an Amel 54 which is one model newer than BeBe. They seem to love Amels.

Hi Courtney

This will depend greatly on the area you are cruising in, for example our 2001 Super Maramu 2000 cost us $3000 pa in Australian waters with Panteanius and almost $7000pa with the same company for Asia and Indian Ocean. We just moved to Velos which was about $6000 pa for Asia west and Indian Ocean (based on boat value of $395,000).

Having gone through all the comparisons recently each company varies hugely and you have to read absolutely every line in the fine print, for example Panteanius pays absolutely nothing if your boat is taken by pirates and their excess (or deductables) were 5x the amount of Velos, however they were far superior in covering personal accidents, covered us 100% for single handed sailing and had a number of other benefits plus were a pleasure to deal with.

Good luck with it but take care, there are huge differences and you need to firstly decide what is most appropriate for your needs and sailing plans.

There could be many reasons for these two apparently unrelated events. I believe that it is likely that it could be as simple as the rocker switches or thermostat in the wrong positions, or a breaker turned off. 

Or, it could be more complicated.

Let us know what the A/C tech finds.

   Thank you for your guess on the quantity and for suggesting the Micron 77,  I will look into that.  My usage over the next 2 years will be only 3-4 months  during the summer so perhaps the Micron Extra would be ok so long as it does not create other problems with flaking.  
   Would you know anything about the paint (s) that Amel has been using over the last 4-5 years when the paint was bought for my boat?  I am told that the last paint used was purchased from Amel and came in unmarked cans at least 4 years ago..maybe more.  It would be nice to not have to prime the hull since the old paint is in really nice condition but I sure do not want to risk an adhesion issue.

I do not know the quantity for a Maramu. A SM or 54 is 20 liters for 2 coats plus a third coat at the waterline and leading edges, leaving 1-2 liters left over on a SM. I suspect that 3 each of the 5 liter cans will do what you want.

Europe does not distribute Micron66, but they do distribute Micron77. Micron77 has an advantage over Micron66 in that it is OK for fresh or saltwater. Micron Extra is widely used in Europe. It is less costly than Micron77, but, of course, not as effective. The last I heard was that the EPA has not approved Micron77 for the USA...it has been waiting for approval about 8 years (no political statement intended). Micron77 is available in Martinique.

I do not know the quantity for a Maramu. A SM or 54 is 20 liters for 2 coats plus a third coat at the waterline and leading edges, leaving 1-2 liters left over on a SM. I suspect that 3 each of the 5 liter cans will do what you want.

Europe does not distribute Micron66, but they do distribute Micron77. Micron77 has an advantage over Micron66 in that it is OK for fresh or saltwater. Micron Extra is widely used in Europe. It is less costly than Micron77, but, of course, not as effective. The last I heard was that the EPA has not approved Micron77 for the USA...it has been waiting for approval about 8 years (no political statement intended). Micron77 is available in Martinique.

Retrofit air conditioner in place of diesel heater on an old Maramu

Hi all.


It's warming up here in St. Martin and it looks like we'll be spending storm season on the hard.  I was wondering if anyone here had ever tried retrofitting a 12V A/C unit in the coaming locker of a Maramu in place of the old diesel heater.  Of course, being on the hard, we won't be able to use a water-cooled unit.

Onan Generator rubber mounts

I have just ordered a new Onan MDKBK. Can anyone tell me the SPEC / supplier of the 4 rubber mounts that the generator sits on bolted to the bonded in wooden board? It would appear that not all these Bobbin mounts are the same.

I guess this looks like the rudder holder plate bolts passage on the Maramu
check picture attached - taken when rebuiding the rudder last year.
on the Maramu the anodes are on the rudder, continuity copper wires are running down the outer part of the skeg linked to the rudder bolts by tin weld; goes thru holder plate into the rudder blade to the anodes bolts.

I believe that there have been many modifications to that Mango. I seem to remember a late model Mango that had the zincs on the rudder like Santorins, SMs, 54s, 55s, and 64s. I am not sure of the position of early model Mangos. Hopefully a Mango owner can give you a clear answer for hull #60.

The most important issue regarding the zincs and the bonding system is: does the zinc electrically connect with no resistance to the bonded items? Have you checked continuity between the zinc and the engine propellor shaft? What about inside the area of the rudder post/quadrant? Is there evidence of the bonding wire connecting to the rudder post or quadrant? This connection the the rudder post/quadrant is what you should see on the above mentioned models. Unrelated to your direct question, but significant because of the potential modifications on hull #60, is this: Is there a weep hole in the bottom (underneath) of the rudder?

We have the rudder zincs and the prop zinc.  I believe the other grounding plate is for the SSB radio.

Ian,

   Yes, that is amazing that you can use a stainless steel pan scrubber on the Copper Coat.  No doubt the bottom of the keel would fair better in a minor grounding than softer antifouling.  

   The fair skin thing was one of the reasons I wanted the protection provided by the fibreglass hardtop on my Maramu.  With copious amounts of sunscreen, a hat with a neck drape etc. I am hoping that I can make it through the tropics without being burnt to a frazz.  Sorry about the loss of sailing due to the ailing parents, again, I am sort of in the same boat myself with the parents unfortunately.

   Nice to have those sailing plans to look forward to, best of luck.

We missed a season in the Caribbean this year due to ailing parents. Next year we'll cruise the Windward area, then head back to UK via the OCC Azores rally. The Baltic and Scandinavia beckon next where the sun is more considerate to a fair skin!
