Hi Elja,

You can find some more posts about this at the group site.
If it is the same as on our SM2K 2001 it is a Calpeda B-CM 20, sold through Climma/Veco.

You can find details on the web.

Hi Chris,

I have just changed my turbo charger and I don't get 3500 RPM at the moment. An overhaul of the trubo is for sure not bad, but maybe you won't get your envisaged result.

I thought first that I had a bad diesel or some bugs in the tank. The diesel is cleaned and the tank as well.

With all this I get max RPM 2900. Maybe I have to overhaul the engine specially the injection pump and at last also the injectors.

For your case if you get 2800 rpm so maybe no for sure the turbo charger is working and can't be blocked. Blocked turbo get max rpm 1900 to 2100.

Maybe you get a note when the last big service on the machine was done.

In may case I Need a big service, because my SM was not moved for 3 years before i bought it.

Concerning the Generator, be careful, that you get also a note, that the anodes were changed recently. I used my Generator for about 10 hours and I had to change the pump and the heat exchanger as well, because both were corroded and were leaking.

Have good luck, many pleasant moments on your SM.

Fair winds and also a handsome water under the keel

Hi again Chris, I got so excited about the rpm ,I forgot to tell you that if the prop with a missing blade is a auto prop you can buy new blades for it from Bruntons the manufacturer. Either singly or all of them.

Max Prop, Auto Prop, c-drives, fixed prop, let me throw Spurs into the equation.

The boat we are buying is a 1998, SM 224.

What prop would have come standard from the factory at this time?

The original propeller had one of the blades depart. I believe that this prop is located at a local machine shop....if they can find it.  Aka: minus one blade.  I think I need to find out what this prop was before I proceed any further?

There is a fixed pitched prop fitted at the moment, I imagine this is the factory item, however I was happy to see there was a rope cutter fitted also.

I shall do a little research and try to request a picture of the original prop.

During sea trial, we could not get maximum rpm out of the engine with the fixed prop, only 2800rpm, I need to investigate why.  This was after pressure washing hull and cleaning the prop.  I suspect it could be blocked after the turbo, or the turbo needs an overhaul.  I shall investigate this later.

We shall be moving to the boat (Thailand) later next month and want to organise as much as possible before we get there.

I hope I don't abuse the forum, however I have now met 3 separate Amel owner and looking forward to meeting more.

There are so many other questions I have but trying to do as much of my own research first.

Hi Chris, if you have the  Volvo TMD 22 78hp 2800rpm is the correct max revs. Many of us sweated over this for years without knowing this. I will say it again. 2800rpm is the correct max revs for the TMD 22 78hp Volvo

Hi again Chris,
Kristy is my first sailboat, and my first big boat.  I was the absolute worst about asking questions that now seem straightforward.  The folks on this group were happy to take me by the hand and explain in detail how to diagnose and repair everything I asked about. No question is regarded as too simple to answer.  Without the group's help I probably would have given up after a year or two.  While I've learned a lot, I still learn something new with every question posed and the answers given.  Fire away, cousin Amelian!

Kristy is SM 243, built in 1998-99.  She came with a Volvo TMD22, 78 HP.  There was an AutoProp and a fixed spare aboard. I spent  $5000+ trying to figure out why she wouldn't get over 2300 rpm. (With the AutoProp OR the spare fixed prop). I finally got the numbers off the AutoProp, and Bruntons (AutoProp mfg) told me it was the prop recommended for an SM with the 100HP Yanmar.  Amel said they used the same prop for both engines.  I had the fixed prop checked by a prop shop and was told that it, too, was over-propped for my boat and engine.  I had the fixed prop repitched per their recommendation, and voila! 3200 rpm.
The only thing I didn't do was service the AutoProp, which I understand needs to be done every couple of years, even if the blades spin freely on the hub, and don't have noticeable wobble.  Others have had the same problem of low rpm that was solved by servicing the prop.

Amel sent me a one-page explanation of how they prop their boats which has as much to do with torque as horsepower.  I think it is in the interest of efficiency.  Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

Bruntons also told me that the model AutoProp had been discontinued, and that new blades were no longer available.

Hope that helps.

Chris,
I havevan older SM with the fixed blade prop and a newer Volvo TMD 22 engine.  Our max rpm is also 2800 with the fixed blade.  The engine runs like a top and has zero smoke.  Perhaps this is to be expected with the fixed blade prop?

Thomas,
I have the EasyView  right to the switch of the onan switchboard. This year they have a new version which connects to USB for programming. I have the grey version and no color display and needed an extra masterbus-usb . I am in contact with the masterVolt in Germany called mareteam and they will update my mastervolt inverters charger with new software via teamviewer.

Thanks Peregrinus,

I omitted that I mentioned that (the lack of mode and the potential need to setup the charger with a constant voltage output) to the UK guy and he basically said not to bother as the charge cycle would be over in 17mins and the voltage constant after that, and that the loads could take the cycle anyway.

Thanks for mentioning the MasterAdjust software, I'm going to need to get familiar with that indeed. Do you have the masterVolt EasyView device? Is it permanently fitted and, if yes, where?

Thanks,

You are correct.  The zinc has separated from the brass bolt.  I’m going to investigate things a little further when we get back on the boat tomorrow,  I think it is sound advice to remove the whole heat exchanger and get it all cleaned out.

On Kristy, the new MaxProp fit almost perfectly on the old shaft used for the AutoProp, There was less than a mil in a couple of spots that were trimmed on the MaxProp by a prop shop to make a perfect fit.

Bill K,

Yes, I know...the C Drive case was modified to allow for a AutoProp blade to pass by the C Drive when the blade is at 90 degrees (feathered).

If you place an AutoProp on an older model Amel SM, and start the engine, chances are you will destroy the AutoProp and the C Drive.

Is that a good enough explanation?😀

The Mastervolt manual for the 24v/100A Chargemaster does not specifically state that the chargers must be used with batteries always.  However, this is strongliy implied, as it reads that batteries should be connected "under normal circumstances."  You are correct that Mastervolt customer service needs to be consulted and a clarification must be obtained.

Where the UK guy went wrong is that he said there is no need to setup the charger for this mode.  Via DIP switches, the charger can be set to constant voltage instead of 3/step.  In this case, voltage will be a constant 26.5V.  I do not recommend using the DIP switches on a Mastervolt charger.

The better solution is to use your PC and the MasterAdjust software (supplied free by Mastervolt) to set the chargers to constant voltage instead of 3/step, and to adjust the voltage to, for example, 25 volts, constant.  This way you do not have the charger switching from Float to Abs to Bulk as you turn on or add or drop loads from the system.

You can also use a Mastervolt EasyView display to do the same adjustments described above.  Much better than using DIP switches.

The vessel (SM224) which we are in contract to purchase next month only has a fixed pitch prop and saw that you have/had a Auto Prop available for purchase, would you still have this?

If you still have it, are you still willing to sell it?

We are super excited about the boat, we are moving on late July as a family, we have a work list a mile long but I love a challenge

Still can't believe we are getting a Super Maramu!!!

Every SM came standard with two props, since having a spare was required for the Class Certification.  A feathering prop was installed as the standard working prop on all boats, I believe, and a fixed prop was a spare.

The standard feathering prop on the earlier SM's was a MaxProp, an Italian made three blade feathering propeller.  Gives 98% of the motoring performance of the AutoProp for 10% of the hassle with fouling. Performance on any prop goes down dramatically when fouled, but the Autoprop can be especially sensitive.

Does anybody know what hull number the switch was made?  (Our #160 is a MaxProp).

Bill R:  Do you know what modification was made to the C-drive to accommodate the Autoprop?  I am guessing the output shaft was lengthened...

Chris,

Be careful...early model Amel Super Maramus will not accommodate AutoProp. The C Drive was modified for an AutoProp to fit.
