Re: Greasing the Bamar 1.01 Furler

Dean Gillies

So, I've now packed the aft facing gearbox with grease. There was not much in there, probably just enough.

The noise has not changed. Still noisy.

So, I've investigated the drive belt arrangement, and I'm a little suspicious that the noise is coming from the 'ball-race/needle race' type bearing which is part of what Bamar call the 'eccentric pin'. What I would call an Idler.

Question .. has anyone been here before me and can offer any suggestions.

My next port of call is probably Bamar for a replacement

The '54 has spinnaker poles as opposed to the SM which has poles for twin headsail down wind sailing... quite different set up...

We just installed a Jabsco par 5, so far we are very pleased with it, We also have a tree
Way valve and found the pressure to be too low on the old pump. Did not see anywhere that it should not
Be subtitled for below waterline. It,s similar to the toilet pumps. jabsco are rather cheap so one can
easily carry a spare, we also changed the fresh water pump to a Jabsco par 4 pump

Please see attached data sheet.  I'm not the best at computers but I think you should be able to open the PDF file.  I put this boat on the forum 6 weeks ago or so and had one interested party.  In the past week, i"ve had four more!  It's really a stout vessel...it can take anything!  I guess in the early days of GRP that didn't really understand the strength of the material and really overbuilt everything.

Age and crew issues have combined to force the sale of my 1976 Amel Meltem. Experienced blue water cruiser with 2 circumnavigations under her keel.  Sound, solid vessel.

Lightning strike in June, 2015 resulted in total replacement of wind, depth, speed, radar and autopilot as well as alternator and charger/inverter, VHF, AIS w/splitter and Go-Free WIFI, HDTV and stereo (basically all electronics replaced).  New B&G Zeus and Triton equipment.

Volvo MD32 rebuilt by certified rebuilder in Sneek, Netherlands in June, 2016. (Approximately 600 hours on since rebuild) at which time standing rigging was also replaced.  Topsides Awlgripped (White) then also.  New refrigeration/freezer (Frigoboat) June, 2016 draws about 1A per hour. Decks need refinishing. Presently lying in Majorca, Spain, but might consider delivery to other local.

B/O over €50k takes it.  Full particulars supplied to your email response.

Source for having gears manufactured

I am in the process of rebuilding the mainsail and mizzen furling swivel gearboxes and am currently searching for the best machine shop in North America preferably with the capabilities to cut bevel gears, etc. Has anyone in the group had this done recently that can recommend a place to have gears made?

Bill K,

Apologies for the slightly pedantic correction but they talk about Gennaker, not Spinnaker. And more specifically the type that is proposed as an option on Amel 54, with the built-in halyard and furling system.

Anchor washdown pump replacement

stephen_lees@...

Can anyone suggest a replacement washdown pump for my SM. I recently put a 3-way diverter in my forward port locker to hook up a hose, but the old diaphragm pump does not have a pressure cutoff when I close the nozzle on the hose and it just trips the breaker. It also has a small leak. My problem is that I cannot find a pressure activated washdown pump that is rated for below the waterline.

Re: B&G wind sensor

Hi Wilem,

I had the same issue on my SM349. Turns out it was a partially broken or corroded wire in the cabling from the mast head unit. I had sent my mast head unit in for repair and it came back calibrated but was fully functional on the test bench. The cabling attaches to a connector in the overhead cubby just forward if the forward water tight door. B&G has specs for the voltages you should see on each terminal. I am sorry I don't have that spec, but bottom line is they should not be static. They should be changing constantly. I pulled a new cable and hooked it up. It has been perfect ever since.

We too have a similar outboard block on the mast head and a Dyneema halyard that we use for the gennaker, we too have travelled many miles with that sail poled out with no apparent issues. One thing to consider is that we don't fly this sail in anything over 10-12 knots apparent, we use the genoa in stronger winds, and upwards of that we have a staysail on its own furler.

I'm looking after this special winch I have seen on some Amels. I want to use it to handle the main sail furler.
Searching the known winch factories no one has a similear winch to offer.

Thank you.

Bill,

many, many thanks. That is exactly the winch I was looking for. After searching for 3 days the web with no results I got the answer here thankfully within one hour. Great.

Re: Search for this winch

Gerhard,

What you are looking for is called an Anderson Line Tender.  It is still manufacturer by Anderson, and readily available.  The one used on the boom to run the outhaul has been modified by Amel to accept the shaft for the furling motor.

Hello, about bilge cleaning , we proceed simply as follow .
Every 2 month : high pressure cleaning with some liquid soap , as water is clean .
Every 6 month : outside , cleaning of all bilge parts .

Very important : we have made a brand new stainless steel strip in replacement of the current copper one . This have been made by Amel Martinique ( Alban ) Who valid electrical continuous flow . I was in my last job inplemented in chemical reactors design and we currently use stainless strip for earth connection . Big value , stainless strip is strongly corrosion resistant than copper .
