Hi Bill, I've attached the one I made when I renamed our boat. The dimensions listed are in inches. Some SMs have a grab rail to port of the steps which might eat into this space, so keep that in mind. Ryan and Kelly

Re: new Rigg on SM2000
Alexis LETELLIER
Hi Eloi,
I just changed my standing rigging at Seanergie Hyeres. And as you said, it's ACMO fittings with WDS cables. I actually didn't challenged that part. My standing rigging was from 1989, and when they removed it, they could confirm it was still in excellent conditions. Still, we wanted to be safe, and 30 years is a good life already. If I may ask, how do you know your rigging has to be changed? (2004 looks young compare to our SR) I can't answer your question about quality of these cables. Just one point, Seanergie warned me that today, cables are made with a small part of carbon for some reason. And this material can give a slight "rusty acpect" quite quickly. But it's not real rust, and has no impact on the solidity/longevity of the cables. cheers Alex

Hi Eloi,
We had Pen Azen rerigged 4 years ago by X-Voiles in Hyeres on the recommendation of Amel. Very professional job. They took both masts off the boat. When they finished the boss and I sailed for about 5 hours while he carried out the final tweaks.
They , too, used ACMO fittings but bought the cables direct from Germany. As I recall it, the one German supplier is the company that everyone uses--including ACMO themselves.
We rerigged after 16 years and about 50,000 miles, which was stretching things a bit, though the old rig was in good condition. Having a new rig tweaked by a pro made a noticeable difference to our sailing performance.

Im am in the process of buying a SM2000 from 2004. The standing rigg has to be changed. Amel in Hyères proposed to me the company "Sea Nergie Nautic" (former Rousseau) to do the work. They made a quite interesting offer with fittings from ACMO but the cables would not be from ACMO but from WDI in Germany. Does anybody have experiences with those cables or would you recommend to use cables from ACMO. Many thanks for your help. Eloi SM 2000 #426 (hopefully in 3 Weeks)

I did contact Amel but while they have done an absolutely amazing job of providing many of the parts I need, they could not help me with the bearings and seals. The sizes of the seals were marked right on the seal and the bearings could be measured and matched up at the local Napa store. Jim SV Sueño Maramu #220

Thanks for the images, they were helpful. When you replaced all your bearings and seals did you order them from Amel? -Tim

Congratulations on buying the Maramu. My boat is #220 and as Joel stated has fibreglass coverings for the motors. The original motors and gearboxes are still in very good shape and have given us no trouble. I went completely through the mainmast gearboxes replacing all bearings and seals. I have seen a few different types of gearboxes and motors on Maramu’s. I will include a photo of what mine looked like prior to the service work and painting. The motors looked almost like new when I opened them up. The last photo is after repainting/seal and bearing replacement. James

I can second Sarande in Albania. Very efficient and cheap. I did it twice. And Albania is a great tourist destination. Renting a car and exploring the countryside and national parks is highly recommended!

Over the last several months, I've become an involuntary expert in all things VAT on boats in the EU. Marocco works, so does Gibraltar (that's a change since the UK left the EU) but the Channel Islands do not work - at least not for French customs.

I tried this procedure during the winter of 2018/19 in Naftplion and was told it had been discontinued. It has been discontinued in Spain as well, by the way.

There would have been a fiberglass shroud to protect it from the elements .

I recently bought a Maramu hull #188. The previous owner used windlass motors as replacements for the furling on the main. They seem to be corroding quickly since they were not built to be exposed to the elements. Does anyone know what originally would have been here?

Hi James;
We are currently wintering ( And “summering” I guess) in Montenegro. We highly recommend Montenegro, especially Porto Montenegro. We cruised Albania for a week last year. If you are just planning on checking in and out, Saranda will be a great option. It is only a few miles across from Corfu. An agent was referred to us by our agent (and now a good friend) in Corfu. She was very professional and took care of everything. The dock in Saranda is not the best, but will be safe, if no southerly component to the wind conditions.
Let me know if you need the agent’s contact information.
Happy Sailing;

Thanks for this information and also for the warning about opinions and responses possibly varying with officials. I am hoping to return to the boat in time to have the option to make a short trip to either Albania or Montenegro before the time actually runs out. We had a wonderful time in Montenegro in 2019 btw. Does anyone have any advice for visiting at least the South portion of Albania to get the clock reset on the VAT issue? Our destination will actually be Izmir to have the boat measured for new sails so Albania is going in the wrong direction but I don’t think there would be enough time to reach Izmir without going over the 18 month limit. Cruising has certainly become more complicated!
Thanks again!
Best, James SV Sueño Maramu #220

Re: Covid, Spanish VAT and the18 month temporary importation rule
We are US-flagged, in Gibraltar now, on the Spanish side (Marina Alcaidesa). We took a bike trip into Gibraltar, and stopped at Queensway Marina to ask if we could restart our 18 month clock by checking into their marina for one night. They said yes, and they could handle the clearance particulars for us. We are not running out f time, but might do this before we move into the Med, just as insurance.
