Here is a link for a company have used in the past. www.Barefrigeration.com  and go to Custom Gaskets.  Find the profile you want and follow the measuring instructions and then order.  They have a quality product at a very reasonable price. 
Please let me know if you wind up doing the fridge (under the counter). I am thinking about doing ours. It is not a tight as it should be. I would like to know how the seal comes off and is installed. I haven’t looked at it very closely yet.

And yes I now  Beretts  design office and yes I met Mr. Carteau back in 1998.
The 54 Amel was designed by the Amel Team. Not by Henry Amel. Only my 2 cents word. I think my arguments are faire.

Hello Hanspeter. I think you are confusing the Amel 55 with the Amel 54. The Amel 55 hull and deck and rigging was designed by Berret and Racoupeau, a naval architecture  firm located in La Rochelle France. All of the systems engineering and ‘Amel ‘details on the Amel 55 were still the province of the Amel design team within the Amel shipyard in La Rochelle.   The Amel 54 was desig ned by the Amel Design Group.. Yes Captain Amel was gone when this boat was first launched but the drawings and engineering of the Amel 54 were done largely by Jacque Carteau who was, in fact, the one who did the drawings and engineering on almost all of the Amel boats from the late 1960’s onward. He was Captain Amel’s ‘eyes’ and interpreted Captain Amel’s ideas into the boats we all love. How do I know this? I watched him do the 54 and no external resources were involved in the 54. I have seen the blueprints for other Amel designs with Carteau’s initials and name in the data box on the drawings.

I think you have the Balmar Furling System ? Correct? If so, with you plans , change this system to a Reckman System; ok very costy ,but for the next 20 Years no problems.

Nice and interesting Website, congratulation. One thing only; Henri Amel did not design the Amel 54. The Company Amel with extern architects did it.

I think this is a common problem...

i have taken off all the white plastic on the rigging except where sheets rub against the shrouds, and then I have replaced the original stuff with a size larger, so it turns as the sheet  moves past it...Plastimo have a lot of different sizes available.

As for the corrosion at the swage ends, i have two products..one is INOX which the previous owner swore by and left on board, and the other is a NZ product called GRUNT.

They both work in a similar fashion. Paint it on, leave for about 15 minutes and then hose off with fresh water.

Result : rusty marks all gone

Grunt works well on gel coat too...for rusty marks..e.g. on deck at the bow where the anchor chain comes up.

I rechecked everything and got the same results.  It appears the S3G has lost the ability to energize the  "MOTOR" terminals when the SmartPilot should turn the wheel to adjust the course.

I sent an email to Dan and am hoping he's still in business.

Duane, 

The clutch and drive motor should only get power when the control head is set to AUTO. The clutch should get about 12 volts, and the motor get about 24 volts. The polarity will change causing the drive to turn the rudder Port or Stbd. There will be no voltage at the drive motor terminals unless the S3G wants to turn the rudder. To be safe while checking voltage at the S3G motor terminals, you should have Peg press +10 on the control head while it is set to AUTO. 

If you are not getting voltage at the S3G drive motor terminals and there is no fuse blown on the S3G, you probably need to have the S3G repaired.

The reason I want you to go through the "drill" on the voltage, is because it is important. 

Raymarine only makes 12VDC clutches which means your Raymarine 24VDC drive has 12VDC clutches.

There is a clutch fuse on the S3. It has to be inserted into the "12v" slots, not the "24v" slots. Check where the fuse is inserted and check the condition of the fuse. If the fuse is in the wrong slot, chances are your clutches are damaged. If it is in the correct slot and the fuse is good...and the rudder reference is good and mechanically connected good, it is likely that a component of the S3G needs replacing.  I like to use a guy in Colorado for anything Raymarine. Dan Gerhard C250"at"mydurango.net. Other owners have also used Dan as a Raymarine trusted source. He ships worldwide. 

I bought from Dan a refurbished S3G and 7001 control head, and a new fluxgate compass, and rudder reference. My plan was to sell them on eBay when we sold the boat. My thinking was that the difference in purchase and selling prices would be rent. Dan told me that the most probable failures would be the rudder reference and the fluxgate. My experience was opposite which just goes to prove that anything can happen.

The rudder reference seems to be working, based on observation of the Raymarine Control Head (that's the name of the autopilot device at the helm station I believe).  It does indicate the rudder position.  I'll visually check that it seems in good condition though.

Hi Porter,
   that is a bummer on the motor.  I am not familiar with the the triniquet furler, that must be a "54" feature.  If the water inside the housing was fresh water the old motor might be recoverable.  I know you don't want to mess around with it right now, but I would hold onto it and see if a shop can clean it up.  It would make a great on-board spare.  

Will Jean Collin send a "care package" with grease  along with the replacement motor?   I am sure you are spending a few euro on the replacment....seems like he could add a tube of grease.

A question if you would.

Sailing Martinique to Fort Lauderdale these two weeks. Stopped in Guadeloupe as the trinquet motor pooped out. Took it out and amel Martinique is sending a new one plus belt.

Question one: what kind of grease was that packed in there? I took it out and need to repack.

Hi Jacob,

The piece looks like it is made of some fiberglass material. The upper aluminum piece has a hole drilled in it. Possibly AMEL put the fiberglass thing in place so if there was too much torque on the device it would break away and it was pinned in place through the hole in the upper piece—just a guess.

Got it sorted, mostly.  

 

It turned out that as you all said, it was the breakers.  They're located in the companionway on this boat.  And now I know what "mat" and "bome" mean!  Thanks, Eric and Olivier, for helping me understand why I would hear a solenoid even when the breakers were off.

 

Now here's a puzzle: When I disengaged the furling motor to manually furl in the last little bit of the main the other day, I found a weird little broken piece of some kind of pressed material taking the torque from the furling motor to the furling unit (photo attached).  This must not be original equipment, right?  Could I maybe replace it with just a little block of aluminum or something?

My friend Eric Forsythe has circumnavigated twice –(both ways) circumnavigated the Antarctic.

Twice and numerous passages totaling over 325,000 miles and is going out again in July at age 85 on his home made yacht Fiona. (CCA Blue water Recipient). I don’t believe he ever had more than 120 gallons on board.

 

I also recall him sailing 20 miles a day for many days on the equator a few years ago.

 

Me personally I will turn on the motor.

 

When I referred to Bermuda, I was speaking about the Bermuda high that usually is good for 3-5 days of no wind.

Of course if I were in Bermuda I would stay and wait for wind.

We usually pass Bermuda 175-200 miles east or west of Bermuda. Have sailed by that island I think 32 times.

Also thanks to Ann-Sofie and Bill R. for their insights on fuel usage.  It was all useful and has an important place in my knowledge base.

 

In Eric's comments I see the magic word: "schedule."  If you have a "must do" schedule, then fuel is a required ingredient. You say you always "come in with 600 liters of fuel".  Do remember, that's almost over half a tonne of weight.  I know people who sail larger boats tend to not think about weight very much, but that is adding 3% to the sailing weight of the boat and that DOES have a real impact on light air performance, especially if it puts the boat off her lines.

 

We avoid schedules like the plague.  We tell people who are sailing with us  that we can tell you WHERE we will meet you, or WHEN we will meet you, but not BOTH.

 

It's not good or bad, everybody travels in their own style. but here are two examples of why I feel the built in tankage is more than adequate for MY needs.  Your mileage WILL vary!

 

When I was sailing from Hawaii to San Francisco I COULD have loaded up with fuel and motored on a rumb line though the middle of the East Pacific High.  I know several people who have done it that way. Instead I sailed close-hauled north, then reached east, then ran south to stay in the wind, and out of the high pressure system. Hundreds of miles out of the way, and an extra 5 days or so at sea, but there wasn't a schedule to meet.  All that AND we waited a week for the weather in Honolulu, so I guess you could argue that we were two weeks late because we were light on fuel, but we didn't think of it in those terms. 

 

As an aside, after a wild and windy passage, we did need to start the engine for the last 10 miles, because we ran out of wind coming in the Golden Gate--how strange that one of the most reliably windy places around failed us!

 

If we were in Bermuda and had a week of calms forecast, we would just stay put until the weather allowed a comfortable passage. We have waited 2 weeks for a good weather window to go 200 miles--because we can. Kind of an old fashioned approach, but we do have the luxury of not having a schedule imposed on us from the outside world, and we work very hard not to set one for ourselves.  The very idea of listening to the engine run for days at a time makes my head hurt!

Now there is a question about a check valve in the bilge pump hose. On my SM #345 there is a check valve on the bilge pump hose.  Bilge pump does not work if check valve failed open.
On my previous boat I have had a check valve on the bilge pump hose.
I don't see a problem with that. Please explain why you see a problem with a check valve.
