Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re rigging an SM -- the new rig
amelforme
Hi Ian and Judy. What you mention is great advice to pass along about the ‘new noises’. Wire rigging stretches about 5-8% after you use it ‘hard’ after its first installation. It, essentially, ‘unwinds’. New rigging should be re-snugged up when it shows signs of looseness after it is first installed. As it gets older and is ‘work cycled’ it starts to weaken and actually will stretch a little WHICH IS NOT A GOOD THING. As the rig then gets very slightly loose, it allows things, the mast step included, to move around. The masts are great big aluminum tuning forks and they amplify these new noises significantly. If any Amel starts to make creaky noises, find out why immediately. It is usually the mast step or rigging related. Your Amel should sound like a cathedral at midnight when dealing with waves and heeling which is to say as quiet as a church mouse. And the best move you made was to go to folks with proven experience re-rigging an Amel. I have never, not once, seen a rigging firm re-rig an Amel, the first time they try it, correctly. Substituting ‘inch’ for metric wire is the major sin as inch equivalents are mainly smaller, as well as reusing clevis pins and turnbuckles which is penny wise and pound foolish. The turnbuckle beneath the jib furler is a unique to Amel fitting which many places botch when trying to find a compromise. You will sleep like a baby, a chubby well fed one, with the efforts you have made to “get it right”.
Have fun with your Amel!

[Amel Yacht Owners] Explosion & burnt smell on Eumenia dishwasher - FOUND SOMETHING
Alexandre Uster von Baar
Good afternoon,
First of all thanks to Bill (SM2K #387 BeBe) for the illustration on removing the stove and also big thanks to Mark (SM #275 Creampuff) and his details explanation for the sequence on removing the cabinet facade in order to access the dishwasher cover. I will post an illustration later on. So, I open the dish washer and found “something” (fuse or capacitor?) burnt… As you know, electricity is my weakness point… could someone please let me know what is that burnt part? And where to find one? http://nikimat.com/eumenia_dishwasher/eumenia_dishwasher_8.jpg http://nikimat.com/eumenia_dishwasher/eumenia_dishwasher_7.jpg Here are 10 pictures. http://nikimat.com/eumenia_dishwasher.html Also, “why” would it blow? Normal wear? Something to create the explosion? (if so then I need the cause). Anything else I should be looking at while I am there? As always thanks in advance! Re rigging an SM -- the new rig
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
We had decided to return to Hyeres because we wanted to be absolutely certain that the riggers knew what they were doing. The exercise has been an absolute delight. Amel use XVoiles, riggers and sailmakers, established since 1978. Philippe and Didier are the current patrons , very much hands on. Their crew includes Olivier who worked for Gatef for 15 years till joining XVoiles 14 years ago, Marc ( who shins up each mast pretty well unaided ) and Christophe. They used a crane to take the masts off the boat for a thorough inspection. Made the rigging themselves using ACMO turnbuckles and German wire ( one German company has such a reputation that it has pretty well established a monopoly as a supplier --ACMO use the same company ) they dress the masts, restep them, reconnect all the electrics and then go sailing with you-- in our case a 5 hour spin in winds up to 25 k. After that, one lower aft on the main mast needed a tweak. Eric on Kimberlite has recently commented on the silence below while under sail. I had noticed that Pen Azen had developed a few squeaks, which I put down to old age. However, with the new rig complete silence has returned, so I think it was a slightly slack rig that had caused the noises. If you develope some squeaks down below, check your rig tension. What Joel and Olivier and others have said about the huge tension of an Amel rig is so true. The XVoiles guys just tightened and tightened, two guys on the fore and back stays. Impressive. We have a new boat! Ian and Judy, Pen Azen, SM 302, Hyeres

We decided to return from Greece to Hyeres, 824 miles non stop. We sailed cautiously in fairly clement conditions until we left the straits of Bonifacio when we were presented with force 7 all night , up to 37 knots for a couple of hours. From the east, so on the beam. Ordinarily a well reefed Pen Azen would have loved the conditions but I had visions of losing the rig on the very last lap, so we reefed to almost nothing and used the Volvo to nudge us along. I have to say that on arrival in Hyeres the rig still looked brand new. When it was taken down, I'm sure I heard it say " What's all this about ? I'm good for another 60, not sure about you !" Well, old friend, you deserve your trip to the Great Rigger in the Sky. Like all things Amel you have never let us down. We salute you. Ian and Judy, Pen Azen, SM 302 Hyeres

Mark, even thought the breaker is switch of, I unplug the from under the sink to be on the safe side. I was researching and read on Bill on BeBe that he did the replacement. http://svbebe.blogspot.com/2014/03/when-we-clean-our-stove-we-really-clean.html Thanks for the details instruction how to remove as well as Christian’s name. Was my thinking as well, if I can repair it by simply putting a new heating element will do it, if now will install a top load freezer/fridge. Bill (SM#160 Harmonie), I would love to see your pictures! You should be able to see my email: uster@rocketmail.com or uster at rocketmail dot com Thanks again for your help! --------------------------------------------

Subject: RE: [Amel Yacht Owners] Muffled explosion and smell after using the Eumenia dishwasher To: amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, September 18, 2016, 5:37 PM Alexandre, It is probably a good idea to unplug the unit from the outlet under the sink J We had an issue similar to yours. The heating element in the unit burned out or shorted. The unit otherwise ran. However, I could smell the electrical burning smell under the sink. We shut the unit down until returning to the USA and had time to look into it further. I removed the front panel of the dishwasher and could quickly see the heating element had shorted. The green wire to the heat element was burned due to the short (the breaker never popped). I have ordered a replacement heat element but have not installed it yet. Has anyone else done this? How does the heating element come out? It appears to be well sealed. Any help or guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. If your dishwasher is going to be removed, let me know. I’ll send you pictures of the galley renovation that was done to our boat which involved removing an unrepairable dishwasher and installing a front loading refrigerator, and additional storage, and several other changes.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Muffled explosion and smell after using the Eumenia dishwasher
Alexandre,
It is probably a good idea to unplug the unit from the outlet under the sink J
We had an issue similar to yours.
To access the dishwasher innards you need to remove the stove, the bar in front of the stove and cabinetry from below the sink area. Look for the screws to take the entire cabinet facade off with the doors still attached (it lifts up - very easy to do as you have come to expect from Amel). Remove the wood panel below the dishwasher (4 screws) and remove the metal panel from the front of the dishwasher. This access will allow you to see the entire electronics of the dishwasher. This sounds like a lot of work but it only took me an hour to get to the unit the first time (probably half that when I get in there again). This is a good time to clean behind the stove and inspect the propane supply hose.
After an extensive internet search, here is the only place I found that has very limited parts: http://212.108.44.36/mdscrm/Default.aspx?tabID=55&mdsUCID=4&crs=1&artikelID=AA01019

[Amel Yacht Owners] Muffled explosion and smell after using the Eumenia dishwasher
Alexandre Uster von Baar
Good afternoon,
2 weeks ago, I used the Eumenia dishwasher, after the cycle was finished (and light off), I heard like a muffled explosion… I open the doors under the sink, didn’t see anything, but noticed a little strange (possibly burnt) smell… Investigating, I saw a bottle of laundry detergent that had broke and leaked and assume it burst… Today, I did another genset run, when I switch on the Dishwasher breaker on the 220 volt panel, I heard that same muffled boom… I switch the 220 volt breaker off, did not notice any smell and did not try to run the dishwasher afraid of a short which could create a fire, etc. Question 1) Has anyone experience something similar or can suggest a diagnostic sequence? Question 2) Any source to service/repair the Eumenia dishwasher, preferably in the Caribbean or US. Question 3) Any suggestion for replacement units that would fit (and price) Question 4) Should it not be repairable, or replacement too expensive for something I only “exercise” when I use the genset: then I will put in place a 2nd freezer/fridge, and would love to hear about your ideas. As always thanks in advance… Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Club Nautico de San Juan, Puerto Rico
