Congratulations! If "Bebe" is heading up-island, I have a bottle of Prosecco to celebrate the opportunity to meet Bill and Judy! I am so grateful to Bill for his generosity in sharing his wealth of knowledge.

Fair Winds!

Congratulations Bill and Judy,
Well done and an impressive journey altogether.
We are very interested in the story of the last part of your journey.
You finally left the Mediterranean waters which have changed a lot in the past years.

We also would like to stress your very valuable contributions to this forum and hope that you will continue to do so.

Cheers,

I know I speak for every member of this forum when I say the contributions made by Bill Rouse are invaluable. His knowledge has helped all of us become better sailors, electricians, mechanics, plumbers, engineers and salty swabs. He is much admired by us all. Now, we have another reason for which to admire Bill. He has reached the summit of sailing and completed a milestone proving his ability as a world class sailor.

Please join me in congratulating Bill and Judy Rouse on the recent completion of a global circumnavigation aboard the forum famous Amel Super Maramu BeBe. They just landed in Martinique finishing first of the 20 boats in the rally.

Well done you two!!! Welcome back to this side of the world.

Hi all,
I have been using also this special antifooling Velox on my propeller for the past 4 years in the Med. Not perfect because after two years I get one or two barnacles but no vegetals and excellent adherence. Surely the best I have found.

Thanks Peregrinus!  I've been looking for this for a couple of years.  Found it on Amazon for $35 + shipping.

Does anyone know the model of the hand sprayer for the showers?

Thanks again,

Peregrinus came with silver rubber hoses going from the water valve/thermostat combos to the shower heads.  The fixtures are "Grohe" brand on SM2K N. 350 (2002).

In 2013, one of these leaked a bit when in use.  General marine stores in the States only sold a white plastic version and a silver metal version.  The metal version is bad because it can scratch the woodwork on an Amel.  Nonetheless, we replaced the forward shower with one of the silver metal spiral versions.

In four countries in Europe we sort of looked for the silver version any time we were out and about.  Found the same white and metal versions as in the U.S.  We once saw the silver rubber version at a plumber's in Santander, but they were closed for the day.

Finally in a plumbing store in Málaga we found it: original Grohe "Silverflex" hose.  You need the 1750mm version, make sure to ask for it.  The 1500mm version is too short.

Grohe Silverflex "TwistFree"

1/2" x 1/2" x 1750mm

Should set you back $15-$20.  I couldn't get the new connectors not to leak unless I put a little PTFE tape in the threads.

We copied Kimberlite's solution that Eric showed us in NY and have been most happy with it:

Take the Amel factory preventers, and duplicate.  Make the lines a bit longer so the unused preventer can run when the boom is on the other side. Leave installed any time you go sailing.  Leave preventers loose (unstopped) if braking is unneeded, such as when going upwind.  You forget they're there.

We put one soft shackle on each of the booms, and we attach the preventers to the soft shackle.  Less noise, less scratching, and exactly what Amel does on the 55.  I think it is the same Amel did on the 54?

We did, plus we added one block to the mainsail preventers, so the brake is right next to the cockpit (next to the boat's lift point) so it is much, much easier to unlock the brake than with the Amel original.  We love the system.

Funny thing is, we've been carrying a brand new Wichard boom brake in its original box since a little before we met Eric.  Someday when we get back Stateside we'll put it on eBay!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dutchman Boom Brake

eric freedman

Duane,

I had a Dutchman on my old last boat and found it cumbersome and ineffective. On Kimberlite we always rig two preventers on the main boom.

They are attached to the eye on the boom made for the preventers.

We use 3 part blocks on each end of each preventer and attach them to the chain plates.

The line then runs back to the secondary winch on either side.

We can then easily use the preventers without going on deck.

Has anyone tried a boom brake?  It would be so much easier than managing the two preventers that Amel has rigged for the boom.

Yes

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Dutchman Boom Brake

VLADIMIR SONSEV

DUANE,

Thanks. As I understand the preventers for on both sides of the boat are identical.
Is this correct?

Vladimir,

I'll describe the Mainsail boom, the Mizzen boom is similiar.

There are two block and tackles with cam cleats (like a typical mainsheet on a smaller boat), one each side of the boom.  One end hooks to the boom just forward of the mainsheet, the other hooks to a stainless steel loop at the forward end of the jib sheet car near a stanchion.

When running you tighten the leeward preventer.  When jibing loosen the leeward preventer, using it to ease the boom over.  When the jibe is complete tighten the preventer on the (new) leeward side.

You have to go out on deck to pop the line out of the cam cleat, I'd rather it be operable from the cockpit.

The "Boom Brakes" are friction systems that connect to the boom with a line going through it and fastening at each side of the boat where the preventer would.  The idea is that it's mostly a hands-off preventer, once you have the tension adjusted in the brake for the current wind speed.
