Not quite sure what details would help.   Just want to know from the group that knows the most about Amels, pros cons of the 53 vs the 54 for someone who is shopping.  Is the 54 obviously better and worth the extra money?  Little things like the switch to Bowmar furlers, that now have developed a reputation of not being as good as the Amel made ones on the 53....etc

 

Basically for a person that doesn't know as much , or have as much experience with Amels as you do, which would you prefer and why?

Hi Paul. We had the same exact issue.

 

Volvo sends their standard non-isolated engine to Volvo France, which does the ground isolation for Amel. This process does not get recorded to the serial number of the engine. Therefore, if you order a part from the serial number that Volvo France has changed, you will receive the wrong part.

 

The correct part number is 863169 CAPTEUR PRESSION. We ordered from Gwen Marine Service in France as recommended by Amel. They were 78 Euros each, 3 years ago. We also ordered a spare.

The engineer on the boat who was to do the replacement (as I am not on the boat at present) tells me the part sent is incorrect as it has only one connector pin whereas the old one that was removed has two. Volspec insists that the part is correct.

 

My engine is a D3-110i-C, 2008 model

The sensor p/n is 3545696

 

I would be interested to know if anyone has had any similar experience, or would be able to confirm if the sensor has 1 or 2 pins.

Heinz,
Your batteries might not be able to handle the current draw of the Bow Thruster.  Take a look at the current draw during Bow Thruster use, and also look at the voltage while using the bow thruster....  Try charging your batteries completely, turn on the Genset, and your charger...  Then try the Bow Thruster again.  If it works, your problem is found..

Though I am not completely sure why they would install two 500A shunts, the fact that they are in parallel probably answers the question.

When I use my Bow Thruster (which I sometimes refer to as the "Amel Battery Killer") in Aquarius we draw just over 400 amps.  When I first bought Aquarius, I was not looking at the amp meter when docking, it was all hands on deck.  I knew the Bow Thruster used a lot of current, but I also thought that the engine is running, and the 100 amp alternator is suppling a lot of the power...  Wrong...  When you are docking your engine is running at low RPM, and thus you will not get much current out of the alternator.  O, and even if I had my GenSet running, my charger will only charge at 100 Amps MAX.  So, I would still draw 300Amps, and that is still a massive current out of the batteries, especially lead acid batteries.  During my daily routines I would try to keep the draw on our AGM batteries less than 30 amps...  Didn't think much about the bow thruster, but it's one more reason to limit the amount of time you use the bow thruster.

Now to answer the question...  I would think that Amel did this because at some point (Probably due to the bow thruster) there is the possibility that the current draw exceeds 500A.  This would mean that the two 500Amp Shunts would have to be added to get the total amps in or out of the batteries.  

Try looking at your amp meter while you use the Bow Thruster...  In the A55 you might see up to 500amps.  I see that the A55 is fitted with a 12 HP Bow "Thirsty" motor.  That would be at the very least 380Amps!  I would be really interested to hear your current draw when using your A55 bow thruster...

That’s it. 
The system is working probably and we placed a spare fuse for the next failure with tape outside on the processor box.
If you got some of these problems with your new old system again, just check the fuse. After 18 years they are allowed to blow away sometimes.

Our fibreglass did not have the aluminium part, at least not since we have the boat, we have taken it apart many times in the 20 years we have her, probably Amel made the change after our hull.
We changed all the bearings and gears in the upper part, but didn’t touch the lower.
Have you changed the viscosity of the oil you use or do you still use the 15W 40?

There is meant to be a small (approx. 2-3 inches) section of aluminium tubing glassed into the lower unit where the propelled shaft exits the until / where the fibreglass tapers which sounds like is no longer there since your service.
