Welcome Anke and Martin, welcome on aboard to this great group,

I’m sure you will enjoy and appreciate your new Amel, as much as we do.

We are cruising with our 54 in the Med and we winterize in Spain right now. We had the plan to cross the Atlantic this winter, but the virus delayed our plan. We started our cruising-live 5 years ago in New Zealand and spend some time in the Pacific and Asian waters. We are dreaming to go back to the Pacific after spending some time in the Med last 2 years.  Our plan is to leave the Med end of 2021 for Caribean, same as you. Maybe we will meet somewhere coming year. Where are you based right now?

Wishing you fair winds with Mago del Sur.

That sounds good Dimitris, Had it still been in place when we bought Ocean Pearl we may have discovered its value. However I dont think I will change back.

Hi Jeff and congratulations on your acquisition. Unfortunately, the early boats that had the front opening dishwasher, it is no longer available and is not supported for spare parts.  Same thing with the later top opening version. The “brain’ on the top opening version seems to be particularly vulnerable. Any electrical/computer engineers out there who could reverse engineer one? I am told it is a very simple device.

Tom and Kirstin on L’Orient, I could tell by the petulant look on Tom’s face when I showed him how to operate the dishwasher that likely this would be the only time it would be used. If you do convert this space to storage, refridgeration, icemaker or ???, could you operate it one more time to prove that the brain is functioning and then save the brain for me so I can get it reverse engineered?

If you repurpose this area thoughtfully and to Amel quality standards, it will not adversely affect your resale value. I used and appreciated the dishwasher on both of the Super Maramus I was fortunate to own and enjoy. Got the water up to 180F and used less of it than hand washing while being whisper quiet while doing so. That said, about 1/3 of the boats I resell, the owners indicate that

the dishwasher was not used much if ever.

All the best,

Joel

Repurposed into a storage space by the previous owner. It may become a space for icemaker.

Re: Rudder seal packing material

Hello Paul,

Any good chandler should handle this item.  I got mine in NZ at Cater Marine in Opua.  I believe all Amels use a 8 mm width.  Check yours and let us know the width; if you do not find it in OZ, contact Cater and they’ll ship to you.

Very easy to change; Google is your friend.

Cheers,

Hi Tom and Kirtin,

we have a top opening fridge in the dishwasher space installed by the PO and not the most elaborate but we are very happy with it and it gets a lot of use.

Re: In mast furler - Brake - Amel 54

Stefan Schaufert

To bring this story to an end:

I disassembled the brake as far as possible.

It is a simple electric powered magnet completely embedded in a resin, thus you can not check the wires etc..

It holds (usually) a ring of metall the moment you use the furler.

The ring is (all the other time) pressing against a brake disc (plastic, connected with the shaft of the electric motor via a gearwheel) by 8 small spiral springs - arranged in 2 circles.

I checked the wires going in to the magnet. There are appr. 25V when furling. But the magnet was not reacting. I „helped“ him by pressing and then it worked.

Thus I assume the magnet is getting „old“, reduced the springs from 8 to 4 (keeping the outer ones).

Now it is working fine again and there is still enough pressure to hold the foil.

Be aware of the 3 screws on the outside of the device. They are for adjusting the space/ pressure to the brake disc. So when there is slip (e.g. the main is furling out itself in a gust), you have to turn them a bit out. When it seems like the brake is not releasing the furler (enough), the screws need to be tightened a bit (pressing the disc more to the springs and the magnet).

I assume that was what Alexander (A54#156) meant with, „It (the brake) needs a carefull synchronisation with the furler engine.“

You can take the brake out of the furler by only disconnecting the down cap. The brake is the first thing you see when the cap is open.

Overall, the access is much more complex and difficult than the thing itself.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all of you.
