Hi Pat...my 2 cents worth. Your best bet for dry storage is at St Augustine Marine. It is a large and well run yard with a huge dry storage area which is not very expensive.  Also, they have a 100 ton lift...so no backstay or SSB antenna removal. I lived in the area for 12 years, and have hauled there several times with multiple boats and had no issues. Also, re-powered our Amel there in 2015.

I hauled in Fernandina at Tiger Point on our way back from Brunswick for a quick bottom job. It's a narrow cut off the river with lots of current, and a small lift to get you out. It has a very small storage yard, and would not be my choice as a place to store my boat.

If you have any questions, give me a call at 510 nine 08 one eight 35.

Kent, sorry to hear about the eye surgery.  You've really made some miles since then so you are coping admirably.  Peg and I are heading to Tiger Point Marina in Fernandina Beach for a haul-out and paint.  We may be stopping in Ft. Lauderdale to have an inverter installed.

Pat,

Consider going up the coast a little bit to Brunswick, GA. It will be quite a bit less costly than FL. You will still fly in/out of JAX

Muchas Gracias, Duane,
You'll like Tiger Point, but you'll need a car to get around.  Tell the owner Bill Kavanaugh and Jackie I said Ola.
I wouldn't do the Inverter there unless you are very comfortable with the Amel electrical systems.  I've decided not to replace my inverter.  It's usually used in the morning or evening when I'm running the genset anyway, and if not, it's no problem cranking it up for a few minutes to run the microwave.
They have a good diesel mechanic and do a good prep and paint job.

There are several good restaurants in town.  I like the Salty Pelican and Crab Shack the best.  Andy's Hardware has a good selection of stainless fasteners.  No real chandlery in town.  If you need something you can't get there, it's a 1 hr drive to a huge West Marine in Jacksonville.

All the best, happy sailing!

Re: AMFA A88B fresh water pump

Duane Siegfri

Bill,

I managed to get it to prime (see above), must have had an airlock somehow.  I reused the fiber washer, it was pretty rough looking but It's holding pressure.  I need to get some plumbing washers in stock.  I still have a minor leak issue on the front of the pump (there's a 3" or-so face plate held on by a 10mm bolt and it has a slow drip).  I'll have to disassemble the pump to get at it, a battle for another day...

Thanks for the reply!  Hope you and Judy are doing well.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Windlass bolt to deck

Mike Ondra

Thank you all for your various inputs. For the “rest of the story”. Ultimately penetrating oil, double nutting and a rather long extension on the wrench handle facilitated removal of the bolt/stud. The windlass was reinstalled with careful attention to bedding both the windlass base and all the bolts/washers. The new bolt for the embedded plate went in fine, with it’s appropriate Tef-gel coating.

Mike,

If you think think you have enough threads left in the metal plate, the best thing to do is to use it, and the best way to avoid future problems is to make sure the windlass is well bedded down so it doesn't leak, and use a good thread lubricant on the bolt.  Tef-gel, Lanacote, or something similar.

The reason Amel put a plate in the deck only for that bolt, is that for the other three bolts there was plenty of room to add proper backing plates under the deck.  With the chainpipe right there, there was no room for a backing plate. A bolt and washer is not sufficient to distribute the load from a windlass to an unreinforced deck.  Now, since the plate will still be there to help distribute the load, even if you do switch to a thru-bolt, it's not that big a change.

Oh, yes and then follow Lofrans recommendations for rebedding the windlass on a regular basis.

By the way, I have seen people refer to the plate as "steel", but there is nothing magnetic in my deck there, so I am guessing it is stainless.

Hello Mike,
Personally I would keep it as it is, just add grease, never seen or your favorite lubricant.
I believe that if you do that maintenance on a regular basis, like Kent, you won't have problem removing that bolt.

Just about complete with the reinstallation
of the windlass. Question on the last bolt that finishes
into the glassed in plate at the hawse pipe. To avoid future
difficulty extracting and to be assured that the bolt is
well secured, I would like to drill through the bottom of
the bolt hole and through-bolt with washer and nut exposed
below in the bow locker like the other 3 bolts. Does anyone
have ideas about why Amel did not through-bolt this last
bolt in the first place? Anyone see a downside for this
solution? We are always nervous about varying from what the

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] sea wather from bow-thruster

The photos just put in are those of MY BT. But it does not work well. This because (as says Bill Rouse) the activator switch position and the position of the plunger switch appears incorrect. I would like to see the pictures with CORRECT aligment of the activator on the plunger.. I have a feeling that the previous owner of my Santorin has made changes. For this I would like to see original photos, if possible.  Regards.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] AMFA A88B fresh water pump

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Duane,

Check for these issues:
Suction leak on the supply side. There was a fiber washer where the copper tube was secured to the pump. It is likely damaged or now missing. You may have difficulty finding a fiber washer, you can use rubber or silicone. Two hose clamps?

If you removed the one-way valve, it can be reinstalled backwards.

Maybe the one-way valve has either a fiber washer stuck inside or some other trash.

Let me know if I BINGO'd.

Best,

Bill

After I posted this I went back down to the engine
room and pondered the situation.  There was an extra bolt
that looked like you could put another pipe on, so I poured
some water in it to help the pump prime and
"Voila!" it worked!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] sea wather from bow-thruster

Good day to all. There is someone who has the SAME tow-thruster that works well? It would be useful for me to see a picture with activator and plunger switch well aligned, before making changes to my BT.
Thanks.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] AMFA A88B fresh water pump

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Sorry for your trouble Duanne

I assume you have water in your fresh water tank onboard.
Could there be an "air leak" when you reassemble?

I have installed "pre" (sediment) and "post" (chlorine) filters on my AMFA and had to purge for air, but that is not related to your issue...

Please keep us posted, sincerely, Alexandre

I dismounted the pump to replace the
accumulater tank. After reassembly, it runs but doesn't
pump water.  Is the pump self-priming, or do I need to do
something else?

Kent, the prognosis you paint is so wicked, I am glad there are no children on this site. I love your attitude. All good luck with your testing protocol.

Hang in there. Be strong. Have fun with your Amel.

Thanks again Danny.  Only one eye affected. I guess I've got about a 1 in 200 chance of having a problem with the other eye, but can't stop living.  Like Jimmy Buffet, I'd rather die while I living than live while I'm dead.  I'm adapting quickly to monocular vision...just don't throw anything to me yet.

Some one said that my other senses should be heightened after losing one.  Hmmm, I've never had a good nose, my hearing sucks, and now only one eye.  Guess I'll have to rely on my senses off touch and taste to evaluate prospective female first mates.

Happy sailing to all!
