Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] curtain slides

Hi Duane,
There are two sizes, larger for the shower curtains and smaller for the rest.  I bought 100 of each from Amel after exhaustive search was unsuccessful.  I'll never use them all.  Send me an address (email karkauai at yahoo dot com) and I'll mail a dozen of each to you.  I didn't get any extra stops, but they should be easy to make.

As far as the girls go, I'd be like a dog chasing a truck...if I ever caught one , I wouldn't know what to do with it.

Okay, so I looked at it further and it looks like it is working. It is wobbly as all hell but the bolts have not sheared off. The furling motor is fine. The rivets do look a little loose but I am at a loss as to why it would just completely unfurl while the pin was engaged yesterday and now it works "okay". Some work definitely needs to be done but I am not sure. The head sail is tight but the foil wobbles when rolling in under power. Thoughts?

According to my manual....

The red indicator (bottom left) being on, shows a fault (loose or broken belt, too low rating (?), faulty regulator) on the 24V alternator.
This indicator can also be lighted if all the chargers and alternators are working simultaneously(the alternator measures an high open voltage and so stops charging)

I bought 50 and then 100 more of these plastic plugs from Maud at Amel, La Rochelle.  I sent her a picture of them, as well as my SM boat number.  The ones I received from her fit snugly without alteration, and without the need to cement them in place.  Originally when I bought the boat there had been some spare plugs on board from the previous owner(s) that were too small, and I had to use a silicone sealant to hold them in place.  Best to measure the size of your holes to get an exact fit, and get quite a few spares.  They only last a couple of years in my experience.

Eric,

What hasn’t been said clearly yet is that there are multiple sizes of these plugs depending on when your boat was made.  When ordering you need to specify the exact size you need.

Re: Yanmar 24 volt alternator make/model

amelliahona <no_reply@...>

Am I missing something here?  On my SM (Hull #335) the red lamp in the lower right hand corner of the 24 VDC panel  illuminates red when alternator output voltage is less than battery voltage and extinguishes when adequate RPM is generated to raise the voltage to a battery charging voltage.  I believe it is a voltage base warning lamp and not a current based lamp but I haven't studied it in detail.  In all that has been written I haven't seen anybody suggest some basic trouble shooting like checking for voltage on the field wire, (forgive me if I am wrong since this is such a lengthy thread).  I'll have to do a little research on the involved circuits to verify.

Yes, Ben. I have been emailing Neils directly with photos, but determined that it is an Amel installed standard 24VDC house battery alternator. Every SM 24VDC alternator I have seen has the optional 175 amp Leece Neville Alternator.

Regardless the relay is the same.

Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Hi Neils,

yes the relay is related to the red lamp

maybe you have a faulty relay (unlikely), but its more likely to be the alternator itself and/or the alternator regulator.

I don't recognise that alternator, maybe someone else with a similar vintage boat can help.

Otherwise you need at least an auto-electrician, but preferably a marine electrician that understands  the Amel isolated ground system, to investigate it.

Good luck

Bill based on your discretion the worm gear bearing/ bushing is worn allowing it to run free. Normally it's a self locking system.

Gearbox needs disassembly, inspection and probable overhaul.

And Genoa halyard may not be tight enough and/or forestay may not be tight enough.

Thoughts?

I looked in the files section and pictures section but did not have any luck... Can anyone provide a description of the parts needed to rebuild the jib furler gearbox. I have had successful experience rebuilding the other gearboxes I just need a detailed list of what is needed. Pictures are always welcome!

I looked closely at picture you posted .  I have exactly same alternator.  No manufacturers' name is on  it.  just CE Label.  Check closely those small wire connections .

Hi Neils,

yes the relay is related to the red lamp

maybe you have a faulty relay (unlikely), but its more likely to be the alternator itself and/or the alternator regulator.

I don't recognise that alternator, maybe someone else with a similar vintage boat can help.

Otherwise you need at least an auto-electrician, but preferably a marine electrician that understands  the Amel isolated ground system, to investigate it.

Good luck

Eric,
If you look at the photos that Neils uploaded, the relay is in the top right corner of one of the photos.
Its mounted on the engine just above the alternator and it controls the alarm circuit.
