Re: Replacement of carpets in SM

Patrick McAneny

We did the same as Gary ,making a template and cutting the carpet, then had the binding done, I think I undercut the carpet about 3/16" to allow for binding. We were surprise how well it all fit,as good as original. Not a hard job ,maybe a few hours, spent more time selecting the carpet,we went with a berber ,as the pile was short . Its been in about seven years and still looks great.

Alexander, I am of no help in France but we made our own replacements without too much trouble.

We made a template.from large wrapping paper then bought a "remnant" piece from a big-box store.

Cutting it with a box cutter was not too hard, just have to be careful.

Once we had the pieces cut out we took them to a real "Carpeting and Flooring" store and asked them to "Bind" the edges which they did nicely in only a couple of days.

We learned that the "Binding" process adds a small amount of extra material to the edges so our pieces were just a tiny bit too big but still fit ok.

I think we will do it again this summer as the first attempt was mostly an experiment anyway.  It was not very expensive overall.

Best wishes!

Mohammad,

The serial number is 184-00-076/F.

I have no way of knowing that the existing ones are identical, but I believe there was an earlier forum discussion on this confirming this serial number.

On our SM the sonic speed,  the one with the two sensors,  that is connected to Hydra 200 is giving zero speed on the hydra 2000 monitor.
This was probably due to the loss of the neoprene cap of the aft  sensor . Unfortunately this probe is out of production from long time.

Please Did  you hknow how to  repair it ?  Do you know how replace the cable and the aft sensor?

Hi Marco,

The Ebay link and the Maxmarineshop link are actually one and the same vendor.

The partnumber seems to match the partnumber referred to in the installation manual of B&G, assuming Amel used the straight version. They came in the original B&G box carrying that number.

I have not examined the way the are mounted in detail as mine are still working. But they must be mounted from the underside I would say. There is a tube inside the hull leading all the way into the bilge.

I’m guessing the sensor is pushed in the hole bedded in Sikaflex. So I’m sure it will be a pig to remove once the time comes. I guess the best way is by drilling a hole in the face of the sensor and putting in a large screw to get some leverage to pull it out. Remember to tie a piece of string to the other end to feed in the new sensor once the old one is out.

Re: Lubricant Oil for the z drive

ULRICH DANGELMEYER

Hi, Paolo and Bill,

that's very interesting:
last year before my oil change in the Z-drive I asked AMEL SAV , Thierry, for the exact amount and specification. Next to the oil reservoir in the engine room at the bulkhead, there is a sign on my 54 with the strict indication of 20W- 4o oil. Thierry confirmed this as a directly recommended oil type. This specification is not very popular and one could also switch to 15W-40.
The total quantity is 8 litres.
So I ordered the 20W-40 oil (semi-synthetic and especially for marine use) from a German oil company in the web
and did the oil change with it.
Bill, obviously you have some other service information, or does it only concern the SM Z-Drives? That would be important for me to know too.

Thanks for clarification.
Best regards and stay healthy.

Hi Penny & Barry,

I didn’t try PANTAENIUS after in 2017 their USA office offered me USD17K or so which I was ready to accept. Then PANTAENIUS USA sent me to PANTAENIUS UK bcoz the boat is owned by a LONDON company and Dutch registered meaning an additional USD2 or 3K in VAT – so now close to USD20K. Bill ROUSE sent me to another Insurance company and they offered USD8K (but the boat had to be during cyclone season in NEW ZEALAND) and again, happy to save USD10K, I was ready to accept when my friends in NEW CALEDONIA introduced me to my current agent who insured AMELIT for USD5K with LLOYDS in LONDON and no cyclone clause at all.

Apparently these premium disparities still exists as last year I met in the SP some other AMEL owners paying these sky-high USD15K plus premiums. I can eat a lot of sushi for the difference in premium 😊. I am sure PANTAENIUS is still willing to write policies at these premiums while making their conditions IMPOSSIBLE to comply with so they can get out of a claim if they want to.

The writing on the wall is that in 2017/2018, while the premiums & conditions were all over the board for the same boat, these proposal were readily available from several insurance companies; now that seems to be no longer the case.

Thank's Teun,

My Aussie friends in St Martin are very grateful for your research and the good result you got.

Have read a just posted good article on Noonsite about getting insurance, seems to be a hot topic now that so many boats are stuck in areas they don't want to be in.

I am lucky that my wife is British and our boat is still UK registered, our insurance with Pantaenius UK is excellent though a bit pricey.  I am sure your research will benefit many Amel owners.

Hi Teun and Mohammad,

Teun, I have an Australian friend who is having trouble getting insurance. Can you give me the broker that you went with, maybe the NZ broker as well. They just lost cover that they took out 2 months ago through a Caribbean crook. If anyone wants to know who the company was, please ask.

Mohammad, when the lock down is eased I am visiting Oliver who is anchored in front of me. I will be doing the same as your plan and designing the new lithium battery system. I will let you know what I find out as I progress. Things are getting better and easier every year.

Teun,

You're using the VEConfig software to adjust the inverter low voltage cutoff? I have successfully changed that on the Inverter tab "DC input low shut-down". Then you have to "Send Settings" to the Quattro otherwise it won't save them.

If you are still having problems, I have a contact with Victron that is quite responsive. Maybe Dutch people don't like other Dutch people? ;) We've had over 30 emails back and forth. FYI he suggested 20v as the input low voltage cutoff and 21.5v as the input low restart.

Additionally, try here. This may be even better. They're almost as helpful as the AYOG :)

They were delivered to the UK. I Have not used them yet but they look to be correct.

I'm not sure if this is the one in your boat as they made two different models. A straight one (this one) and a angular one.

They're almost as helpful as the AYOG :)

hi all,
locked down home and out of reach of the boat, currently on the dry, and of my owner’s manual, I must instruct a technician about the change of oil of the Amel Z drive. Can anybody remind me the grade or type of oil and quantity?
Many thanks in advance

Paolo,

About 4-5 years ago Amel revised the type of oil for the Amel C-Drive to 80/90 Gear Oil

Re: FRESH WATER SAFETY CUTOFF Maybe Gary Silver will respond

Hi Bill & All:

Mark at Borel returned my phone call yesterday afternoon.  I told him of my long favorable use of his product aboard my boat and the renewed interest in the pump run-on alarm.

He has retired and no longer manufactures his products.  I told him there might be an expanded market for the product due to publication of its utility.  He indicated he would not restart production.  I further inquired if he would be willing to sell the production rights etc. and he expressed no interest in doing so.

Darn it,  I guess we will have to look elsewhere for a 28 VDC pump run-on alarm.
