Re: Rudder leaky

Martin,

The nylon packing nut goes clockwise to tighten, as viewed from above.  There is an L plate held in place by two screws that keeps the nut from turning by itself.  Remove the L plate and tighten the nut by 1/6 of a turn and see if that stops the leak. It should not take much adjusting.

If the nut will not further turn, it may be time to remove the rudder quadrant, remove the nut, pick out the packing and replace it.  Amel SAV have an exact replacement for the packing, and can even supply a new nylon nut if you need it.

I believe that this packing replacement is best done out of the water (someone speak up if it can be done in the water).  However the nut tightening can be done in the water.

Brause I am with my IPhone only, I Goulds mit durch for former discussions. Hope, you can help The rudder trunk of my SM#34 is somewhat leaky (1-2 Ltr. by day, more under sail). The big 70mm. PU- Mother, who acts as a kind of packing, I will tight a little denser. Two questions on this: how much do I have to tighten the nut and in which direction? I think right side. is that correct?
How I notice when the mother is in the end? Stenella is 26 years old and to this screw I've never turned.
If the screw needs to be replaced, is it possible in the water, or needs the ship to be dug?

SM#400 is equipped with all Raymarine electronics except for the AIS (Watchmate), SSB (M802) and Pactor IV Dragon modem, and the satellite phone (FBB250).  This includes 2 autopilots, GPS, 2 chartplotters, a 203e VHF with two handsets, radar, and compass.  So far, in three years of ownership, I have only had to replace the spiral cords to the VHF microphones, and take the VHF to the Manchester NH Raytheon site to have the new MMSI number programmed in (at which point the Raytheon technician updated the VHF programming to include both European and US situations).  I have found that the Raytheon systems seem to be very well integrated, although I do not have a lot of expertise in this area.  They certainly have been trouble-free.

Hi Pat,

I selected Raymarine.  All new Amels are delivered with Ray gear.

Very well integrated… I am very pleased.

Pat,

The following is mostly my opinion.

Most new boats have only one brand because Furuno, Raymarine, B&G, and others offer the builder discounts and/or rebates and other incentives to use 100% of their brand.

Our SM came with:
Furuno GPS, Radar, and SSB
Raymarine AutoPilot and drives
B&G instruments.

Our last boat (Beneteau) had 100% Raymarine. Every component except the autopilot and drive failed one by one, within 6 years.

I believe that Raymarine (Autohelm) has a history of building very good autopilots for pleasure craft.

I believe that Furuno is used more by commercial boats, and that its autopilot is problematic.

I believe that B&G has a history of longlife instruments and is used in commercial and pleasure boats, and I have no experience with its autopilot.

And, I believe that Captain Amel picked the best manufacturer for each of the above, at the time.

Lots has changed since the Super Maramu was spec'd. I am not sure which would be the best today.

Best,

Bill

If Amel installs the tracks for the curtains I would appreciate a reference where I can buy the slides and stops.  I have the small aluminum C-Channel type track attached above the sidelights and on each side of the deck hatches.  For the sidelights the bottom of the curtain has velcro for attachment.

Thanks,

Re: Yanmar 24 volt alternator make/model

svperegrinus@yahoo.com

To me, the red light on the 24V panel just means the alternator is not providing a charge.

For instance, in our case this happens every time in the 5-second period between turning the engine on and the external Mastervolt regulator telling the alternator to, well, start charging the battery.  This delay is programmable and we've never bothered changing it.

Hi Duane,
I deal with Sailrite.
Sailrite curtain track slides do not fit AMEL 54 do not know about the size on Super Maramu. I still have some packers of slides from Sailrite and they are too small for our 54's curtain tracks.
I got the correct size for our 54 from Sonja at AMEL Med. office in Hyeres.
I can ask them today if they have them for Super Maramu.

I believe that the tracks Amel uses are the same size as these sold by Sailrite.com:  http://www.sailrite.com/Curtain-Track-Surface-Mount-Aluminum-48

They have a variety of slides and stops depending on the details of construction and hanging style of the curtains.

Masha Danki for your well wishes, and to Derick for your kind offer.  Kristy is at the Curaçao Yacht Club and will be in good hands when I fly home in a couple weeks to see my eye doc and visit the grandkids.  Also have made friends with other cruisers who are looking out for me (no pun intended).  I'll be back in September to continue my S&W Caribbean swing.
Steady as she goes.

Okay, so I looked at it further and it looks like it is working. It is wobbly as all hell but the bolts have not sheared off. The furling motor is fine. The rivets do look a little loose but I am at a loss as to why it would just completely unfurl while the pin was engaged yesterday and now it works "okay". Some work definitely needs to be done but I am not sure. The head sail is tight but the foil wobbles when rolling in under power. Thoughts?

Hi Duane,
There are two sizes, larger for the shower curtains and smaller for the rest.  I bought 100 of each from Amel after exhaustive search was unsuccessful.  I'll never use them all.  Send me an address (email karkauai at yahoo dot com) and I'll mail a dozen of each to you.  I didn't get any extra stops, but they should be easy to make.
