JP,

I am sure it is not the only thing that we don't agree on...and I am sure that you are not the only one that disagrees with me.

Last time I checked we were not running a contest here.

BTW, I do agree with you on white deck stripes and since my brown needed freshening up, we now have white faux caulking between our faux teak boards on our faux teak deck, on our REAL Amel Super Maramu.

I would suspect this was from a de-mast…
Interesting about changing the drive (does it mean he lost the keel too?)

Going to be hard to sell…

There was one wire connected to the + terminal of the alternator, this small gauge wire was moved to the "F" terminal of the alternator, and now the red light works as expected (lights up when ignition "ON" and turns off when motor starts and alternator delivers power).

Thank you for all the input, your help was crucial for me finding the fault and correcting the problem!

Re: Original instruments

jjjk12s@...

Pat,

Furono used to be leaders in radar and sounders and are still very good butmore commercially focused these days and for recreational use others have caught up. Navico (B&G, Lowrance and Simrad) vs Raymarine is really the main choice and it's down to personal preference.

Pluses for Navico are the 4G radar and the autopilots are good. (I believe Navico took over Robertson quite a while ago so that's their heritage.) B&G radar and autopilot computer are identical to Simrad.

I don't think Navico do a rotary autopilot drive though so Raymarine might win there, although a Navico computer and control head should easily operate a Raymarine drive. Raymarine also has an arrangement with Apple making it easy to use wifi to use an ipad as a plotter repeater if you have a Raymarine plotter, although I think Navico can do that with an extra item.

You should be able to convert to an N2K backbone to integrate B&G (or Simrad) with Raymarine but linking Simnet and SeatalkNG needs adaptors and thought. Although some information appears to be sharable between brands it may not all be, so it 's a bit of a minefield, such as getting the autopilot of one company to steer to the wind instrument of another company, or steer a route from another brand's plotter.

If I was in your position I would probably go with all B&G as your mechanic suggests, unless the autopilot drive was a determining factor, but it is like choosing a brand of car you like, each has their fans,

John, Maramu 91, Popeye (Furono radar, Raymarine St60 instuments, Simrad autopilot, Lowrance plotter)

In my unit there is no L- plate, but a small wire through a hole in the side of the nut going TO an steel eye beside. But the wire is rüstend away ;-)
Tomorrow I get a key fitting for the the mother. Then we try it. Thanks a lot up TO here. If the Unit is dry, we wait until wintertime and look after the rudder, if it is out of the water. Have a good time :-)

Martin,

The nylon packing nut goes clockwise to tighten, as viewed from above.  There is an L plate held in place by two screws that keeps the nut from turning by itself.  Remove the L plate and tighten the nut by 1/6 of a turn and see if that stops the leak. It should not take much adjusting.

If the nut will not further turn, it may be time to remove the rudder quadrant, remove the nut, pick out the packing and replace it.  Amel SAV have an exact replacement for the packing, and can even supply a new nylon nut if you need it.

I believe that this packing replacement is best done out of the water (someone speak up if it can be done in the water).  However the nut tightening can be done in the water.

Brause I am with my IPhone only, I Goulds mit durch for former discussions. Hope, you can help The rudder trunk of my SM#34 is somewhat leaky (1-2 Ltr. by day, more under sail). The big 70mm. PU- Mother, who acts as a kind of packing, I will tight a little denser. Two questions on this: how much do I have to tighten the nut and in which direction? I think right side. is that correct?
How I notice when the mother is in the end? Stenella is 26 years old and to this screw I've never turned.
If the screw needs to be replaced, is it possible in the water, or needs the ship to be dug?

Sincerly, Martin, SV Stenella, in time @ Mediterranian Sea, Croatia.

SM#400 is equipped with all Raymarine electronics except for the AIS (Watchmate), SSB (M802) and Pactor IV Dragon modem, and the satellite phone (FBB250).  This includes 2 autopilots, GPS, 2 chartplotters, a 203e VHF with two handsets, radar, and compass.  So far, in three years of ownership, I have only had to replace the spiral cords to the VHF microphones, and take the VHF to the Manchester NH Raytheon site to have the new MMSI number programmed in (at which point the Raytheon technician updated the VHF programming to include both European and US situations).  I have found that the Raytheon systems seem to be very well integrated, although I do not have a lot of expertise in this area.  They certainly have been trouble-free.

Its a ton of money and I want to make the right choices. I guess it makes it easier to integrate if everything is one brand. Go all Furuno or all B&G , any thoughts .

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Original instruments

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Pat,

The following is mostly my opinion.

Most new boats have only one brand because Furuno, Raymarine, B&G, and others offer the builder discounts and/or rebates and other incentives to use 100% of their brand.

Our SM came with:
Furuno GPS, Radar, and SSB
Raymarine AutoPilot and drives
B&G instruments.

Our last boat (Beneteau) had 100% Raymarine. Every component except the autopilot and drive failed one by one, within 6 years.

I believe that Raymarine (Autohelm) has a history of building very good autopilots for pleasure craft.

I believe that Furuno is used more by commercial boats, and that its autopilot is problematic.

I believe that B&G has a history of longlife instruments and is used in commercial and pleasure boats, and I have no experience with its autopilot.

And, I believe that Captain Amel picked the best manufacturer for each of the above, at the time.

Lots has changed since the Super Maramu was spec'd. I am not sure which would be the best today.

Best,

Bill

I will be replacing all of my instruments. The mechanic doing the work ,Its a ton of moneysuggest I go with B&G as opposed to Furuno chartplotters and raymarine instruments that I have now. I know the Amels came with B&G instruments , but did they also come with B&G chartplotters and radar ? What autopilot ? I think B&G was sold , are they still a quality instrument ? Its a ton of money and I want to make the right choices. I guess it makes it easier to integrate if everything is one brand. Go all Furuno or all B&G , any thoughts .

Thanks,
