Re: Check valve on Heat exchanger Raw Water Pipe?

Karen Smith

Chris,

Thats a "wye" strainer.  Definitely an after-market modification placed there probably in an attempt to prevent pieces of a failing raw water impeller from getting lodged in the heat exchanger.  If you take off that plug, you'll find a basket in there to catch solid bits.  Or, given the condition of the outside, you might find parts of a basket!

Not exactly an elegant implementation, but not a terrible idea.

Description:

All,

It is my great pleasure to announce that Olivier Beaute will present at our first ZOOM Meeting of 2021. It will be held on 16 January 2021 20:00 to 21:00 UTC. Details:

Many members of the Amel Yacht Owners Group trained on their new Amels with Olivier in La Rochelle. Many of us relied on Olivier as the manager of Amel SAV. And, a substantial number of our Group have used Olivier's surveys when purchasing their pre-owned Amels. As most of you know, after a long and successful career with Amel, Olivier Beaute went into the survey business and established ATLANTIC YACHT SURVEY.

The topic of Olivier's ZOOM Meeting will be "An Amel Survey." His presentation will last about 30 minutes with 30 minutes for questions. Tilo Peters will monitor, queue, and ask Olivier your texted questions.

This meeting will be very good for all of our members.
  • Members who own an Amel will someday face having their Amel surveyed. These members will be interested in how to maintain and prepare their boat for a survey and some of the common things that are overlooked by Sellers in preparation to sell their Amel. This will be important information to know in advance of a survey.
  • Members who are searching for an Amel will need a survey to complete the purchase. These members will enjoy learning more about the survey process, especially the Olivier Beaute survey process. This should be extremely valuable.

I suspect that this meeting may book to capacity and urge you to register soon.

Hi Nick,

we ordered a spare one from Antal through euroomarinetrading.
see mail from them:
From  euromarinetrading:

Antal part

Does not have crossbar, that was added by Amel.

Shackle on the car

We have a Bow shackle that fits that car.

752-5/16 – M8

No pin -  no threads,  hole Ø  8,5 mm

(fits the pin in the car. I dry-fitted it on a similar car we have in stock)

Shackle is actually of the HR quality which is some 30-40% stronger than a standard

Net price             $16.40

It does not have the bar, that is Amel specific modification. So far it works fine.
I was concerned using the one with the broken welding. But you could potentially just get a matching shackle from Budget Marine and have David drill out the thread an weld the extra bar in.

I looks at all the mango files and SM files and post and not find any. I really do not want to have to get into the cold water and measure it. It is to determine the load the rudder will put on the new autopilot actuator so I make sure I purchase the right size unit.

Marco Baldan

Dear Bill and Amel Yacht Owners Group,

Many thanks for giving me the possibility of listening to Olivier Zoom meeting, excellent informative event!
I am not yet an Amel Yacht Owner but interested in the Sharki model.
Will definitely contact Olivier for a survey, once identified good candidate units.

With my best regards,
marco baldan

SM spare halyard on main mast

Jarek Zemlo

Hello,

I got my SM without spare halyard on the main mast. I like to ask where on the main mast is the spare halyard block attached so it is not interfering with other halyards and hardware.

We also use it to season our cutting board.

Easy.
Remove the top cover. (The plastic buttons on the side act as the hinge for the cover and carefully snap out. If you lose one, Plastimo supplies these as spares, sometimes for free.)
Remove the compass from its mount. You don’t have to remove completely, just to tilt it forward a bit. Prop it so it stays upright. Light wiring didn’t need disconnecting.
The dome is plastic.
Drill a small hole at the top, still under where the cover is located. Make sure the hole is at the top center of the bubble (the reason for tilting the compass forward, to position the top of the bubble under the cover location). We carefully used a home made funnel to fill the air bubble with mineral oil. When full, clean the outside of the sphere very well.
We used clear  5 minute epoxy, a small dab, to cover the hole. Let it set up a bit, so it’s quite thick (so it doesn’t run into the hole). Let dry and reassemble. Bubble gone!
We sold the boat two years later. We keep up with the new owner and the bubble has not reappeared, another two years later.

After 20+ years of service, the compass on Talia (SM#209) has developed an air bubble (astonishing service life by today's standards).  The compass is a Plastimo Olympic 135.

My intention was to remove the compass, replace the oil, and/or diaphragm.  However, after disassembly followed by a little web research it appears this model compass is not serviceable.

Anyone on the forum serviced or replaced this compass?  Replaced with the same Olympic 135, or other make/model?

Many thanks for your input.

Rudder Dimensions

Arlo

Hello all. Does anyone have the rudder dimensions for the Mango Rudder or perhaps a Super Maramu rudder? I am after the length (forward and aft) and the height (top to bottom) of the rudder.

I looks at all the mango files and SM files and post and not find any. I really do not want to have to get into the cold water and measure it. It is to determine the load the rudder will put on the new autopilot actuator so I make sure I purchase the right size unit.

Thanks
Arlo
