Hi We had this rubbing against the tube. Found a crack in one blade/ At rest it didn't show.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow Thruster and issue with broken blade with a non-branded propeller

Bill Maffei,

There could be several reasons for the propeller rubbing against the tube when bursting to Port, but remember the tolerance is very close, and bursts will cause a lateral force one way or the other...any lateral play, will temporarily relocate the propeller slightly and momentarily.

My guess in order of probability for the lateral play of the propeller:
  1. The pin through the hub could have worn a bigger hole in the hub
  2. The screws could have worked loose, or stretched
  3. The thruster propeller shaft bearings need replacing
And, of course, non-branded propeller may have been a little off in dimension or, flex's when lateral thrust is applied.

Good luck on your propeller replacement...service it every two years.

So Bill, I believe I know what I need to do when I haul out in 2 weeks. Wondering a) if you know of a reason why the prop is rubbing against the thruster shaft while giving port bursts? b) before I contact Maud do you know the cost of a new “Amel” thruster propeller? You did and awesome job on your last service of my thruster! She is dry as a bone and works flawlessly… obviously up until this point but I don’t consider that a bad thing considering the time between services. Also, considering 2 prop blades brought me and my family in safely, without incident while getting tossed around in 20+ knots of breeze. :) Cheers and as always thanks for your help.

I love the KISS principle of the Maramu, with simple hook on spliced holder slung over the lip of the engine hatch to keep it open.
Need to check frays, wear & tear regularly , to dive in without 2nd thought, but seems to work fine.
Nothing to do with the weight on the SM, another proposal.

So glad to hear that this story had a happy ending.  My Maramu has a lighter engine hatch than the SM but lacks the gas struts.  I was wondering if anyone has looked into upgrading the engine hatch on the Maramu to utilize the gas struts?  I rather like my toes and the wife’s too!

I now know if I had a good working set of
struts, my accident would have been prevented or much less
severe.. Shoes would have helped as well.  Another lesson
learned.

Ben,
Sorry to
read about your injury.  May it fully heal with as little
pain as possible.
We
got new struts from Amel in La Rochelle last year, as the
starboard side one had just failed a few days before our
arrival.  The new ones are all nice and shiny in silver;
the old ones were black with just the pistons being
silver.

I have measured the dodger glazing  as 10 mm.  This converts to .393701 inches so you might think that a 3/8” US size would work OK.

Hi all.
We read the Amel forum every day.
My wife and I replaced every piece of plexiglass on our boat. We used old parts as patterns. Cut out new parts with special plexiglass jig saw blades, drilled mounting screw holes with special for plastic drill bits from Mc Master Carr. Used a small router table to chamfer edges. Fine sanding of all edges. Painting glue joints ( called frits ) with black Krylon for plastic. Glue with Dow 795. Be sure to control bond thickness. I used small pieces of neoprene rod. Amel used ss washers between glass and boat. Under screws. I wanted something more compliant.
We are now in RI on the Narraganset Bay Cruising.

I think Ben is dealing with crazing from UV damage. Polishing will have little to no improvement for crazing.

The Alternator is a Valdo from Turkey (60A 24v), it was on the boat when we bought hear, I assume it's the original one as the 12 v alternator also is a Valdo (60A 12V).
The problem I think is that we have a "dump" regulator and not a smart one, the only smart regulator I have found in Greece are the Sterling one, which I have heard mixed verdict about, so hesitate to purchase one.
I had the alternator overlooked at a local workshop who cleaned it and change the bearing etc, he said it work fine. what does mean?, he could not supply any smart regulator unfortunately. now it  start to charge at 1800 rpm and give good amps at least in the beginning. If I reduce rpm it still charge but Amps goes down rather quick. We have had rather good charge rate on our batteries most of the time as we have the solar panels, but still it should start to charge at least at 1300 rpm.

SM Masthead Wind Transducer-Raymarine ST-60

Jim Anderson

On SM384 I have Raymarine ST-60 sailing instruments. Five years ago my masthead wind speed/direction transducer was damaged and I hired a rigger to replace it. There is a "long" model and a "short" model. The "short" model was used. Despite numerous calibration and bias settings and setup maneuvers per the instructions, done a couple of times per year, it has never consistently worked correctly, especially when sailing a wind angle going upwind. The transducer is mounted on the port side of the top of the mast; it points straight forward. Does anyone know whether Amel specifies the "Long" or the "Short" transducer, and if the transducer is supposed to point straight forward?
Thanks,
Jim

Paul the amps has to go down; because that is an intelligent system since 80 Years . Your batteries are full! Periode! Learn more to google it ; alternator...
smart regulator gives you more input during the time the voltage is under 27.8 volt, them any regulator stops charching your bat. makes sens
Valdo is french

So glad to hear that this story had a happy ending.  My Maramu has a lighter engine hatch than the SM but lacks the gas struts.  I was wondering if anyone has looked into upgrading the engine hatch on the Maramu to utilize the gas struts?  I rather like my toes and the wife’s too!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Alternator pulley

Paul Osterberg

Sorry Bill I thought you answer on one of my previous issues concerning my Alternator, in Sweden not many have the name Paul, so I react instinctively on that name

Paul

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Alternator pulley

Paul Osterberg

Bill

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dodger glass thickness

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Ben,

I am 99.9% sure it is Plexiglass brand, and I am 100% sure it is 10mm (3/8"). Consider a light tint...and be sure that the edges are painted where they glue to the fiberglass.

Can someone confirm the original specification for SM hard dodger glass.  What is thickness ?  And is it acrylic or polycarbonate ?

I now know if I had a good working set of
struts, my accident would have been prevented or much less
severe.. Shoes would have helped as well.  Another lesson
learned.

Ben,
Sorry to
read about your injury.  May it fully heal with as little
pain as possible.
We
got new struts from Amel in La Rochelle last year, as the
starboard side one had just failed a few days before our
arrival.  The new ones are all nice and shiny in silver;
the old ones were black with just the pistons being
silver.

I now know if I had a good working set of struts, my accident would have been prevented or much less severe.. Shoes would have helped as well.  Another lesson learned.

I'm going to order some new toes from Amel, too...just to keep as spares.  I'm sure Alex already has a full set or two.

Ben,

Sorry to read about your injury.  May it fully heal with as little pain as possible.

We got new struts from Amel in La Rochelle last year, as the starboard side one had just failed a few days before our arrival.  The new ones are all nice and shiny in silver; the old ones were black with just the pistons being silver.

Yep. It does sound complex.  One sizing  error and you may be stuck with piece you cannot use.  No joy.

alex,

That description is not complete because you also need the specification of each end where they are connected.
I am not sure of the specification, but I am sure that this is a variable specification that needs identification.

Like I said, Ben, it is complicated.

A1A1N40-250-608/400N 316L Stainless Steel
Meaning a stroke of 250 mm with 608 mm overall
400 NM resistance
The stroke is 8 mm
The Diameter of the cylinder is 19 mm
With 8 mm hinge on each side.

Took a few weeks to build
They were $125 each (and free shipping).

These were the highest standard they are, guaranty for 10.000 opening...
They also had a cheaper standard line.

Derick,
My experience is they will last
about 6-8 years...my experience with the original two. I
think you should replace them in pairs...I did not, but that
is another story. Do not over-spec the thrust...they are
rated at N400. There is no maintenance on these except to
keep them clean.
It is
easy to bend one of these if you close the lid improperly.
The proper way to close is to press down on the middle of
the engine room lid.

Ben,
I am
glad that you were able to find swift and competent care for
what must be an excruciating injury.  Thank you for sharing
this cautionary tale.  I will certainly take even more care
when operating the engine room hatch.
One of my gas struts had been
stepped on by an over-eager Yanmar technician and I had to
replace it.  I found that after replacement of the strut
that the hatch gave a much more controlled closure than
before it got bent.  I think that these struts may need to
be replaced on some regular schedule.  Does anyone have a
suggestion as to how long they should last?
