US shore power connections (Amel systems breakdown)

Hello everyone -


I know this topic is somewhat (again) like beating a dead horse however, I find that trying to search the forum for answers is very difficult. I am currently running the 30amp cord to my boat and in the last 1+ year I have had no issues running all the systems on the boat via US power (2 phase). The only things I cannot run are the microwave, water maker and central vacuum systems (without running the genset). So I have this 50amp cord sitting in my lazorette that I have never even thought of using. Is it even possible to use this in the US? In the past when I have plugged this in the breaker would trip almost immediately. The shore power box in the engine room has a 32amp breaker on it so it almost seems useless to me however, I know Amel would not install this if that were the case. Can anyone shed some light on my shore power configuration? I know, I know this is a total Amel rookie question and I apologize but it is easier to post a topic then search through the many posts and narrow it down. My lack of knowledge in electrical systems does not help me at all with this basic question and for that I apologize again.

Our chain counter was not working when we bought Indecent in 2013. The display carries an Amel logo, so we are not sure who the manfacturer is. We took the display off of the have station and in the back there is a hand engraved serial no. 141201-07A. Lofrans, our windless manufacturer, has an Iris chain counter model that looks similar to what we have. The Raymarine chain counter kit that the yacht repair company brought in looks like it is for vertical application at the windlass. I just sent a question to Amel LaRochelle to see what they recommend.

HI CONN, I HAD YET TO SEE YOUR TRAMSMISSION DATE PLATE PHOTO YOU POSTED. OF COURSE IT IS A HURTH, MODEL: HBW 450 2R. IN MY OPINION IT IS A MORE ROBUST AND LONG LIVED TRANSMISSION COMPARED TO THE VELVET DRIVE UNITS I HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE WITH IN THE SAME APPLICATION. A WEB SERCH WITH THIS MODEL NUMBER SHOULD GET YOU ANY FURTHER INFORMATION YOU COULD DESIRE. I NEVER WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHY AMEL SWITHCHED BACK AND FORTH WITH TRANSMISSIONS IN THE SAME MODEL YEAR. I SEEM TO RECALL IT WAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH AVAILABILITY. IF YOU CHANGE THE ATF REGULARLY, IT WILL LIVE ALMOST FOREVER.

It is probably but not certainly a Borg Warner Velvet Drive. You can web search those four words and you will find websites that will help you identify your specific model. If you send me a picture of the transmission I can get a better idea of who manufactured it as Amel would sometimes change transmission suppliers mid model year on the Mango.

New Engine Installation

Hello everyone. About a year ago I experienced a loss of my original Volvo Penta engine, and posted a lot of messages hoping to solve the engine "no start" problem. After much testing and head scratching we finally discovered that saltwater had migrated up into the exhaust manifold and the head, destroying the integrity of the engine and preventing me from starting it. No one has been able to positively tell me exactly why it happened.

I replaced the engine with a new Volvo Penta D3. It was not an easy installation, as the new generation diesels are configured differently. We had to cut some of the frame to get the engine to sit correctly, adapt the old 24V alternator mount to clear the wall (the new one is side mounted and would not work), and modify the exhaust system to go with a 90mm exhaust from the muffler to a new flapper outlet. Volvo would not sign off on the engine without the larger exhaust hose (the original was 75mm). It was a pain, but the new layout reduces back pressure and minimizes the amount of water flowing back into the muffler on shutdown - all good with the new systems.

The good news is that I am now up and running after more than a year of "dead in the water" time. We did a sea trial and all looks good, except a cocked engine mount. We are trying to figure out why.

I have a couple of things to finish and I am looking for help out there. The new engine uses an eKey system (kind of like a car), so there is no key switch. As such it no longer turn on the things that started up when you turned the key. I believe there is a 12V engine room fan that came on, and maybe a pump. I also believe the ignition turned on the 24V alternator field to allow it to charge the house batteries, as well as energize the isolation relay. The engine did not come with the ground isolation system that Amel installed on the original engine. Volvo has something they call a "2-pole" which I have bought, but they give me no documentation. I pretty much have to figure it out on my own.

Does anyone out there know how the isolation relay works on their Volvo engine? Also what systems start up when you turn on the ignition?

I then had my local Doyle loft make me the sail .Over the years they have made 14 sails for me. My first passage in the fall is a nonstop sail from New York to the Caribbean or South America nonstop.

When I leave, I leave with my 135 hanked on. If we go a little slower, so be it. We can also put up either ballooner or my big gennaker
or the mizzen spinnaker.
I just wish there was a fast way to change the headsail.  In any event the 10.5 oz sail is heavy and requires 3 people to move it and put it up.

jib. It is surprisingly effective in moderate conditions. But it does mean sail changes at times. Makes your 135 look an option to be considered.

Hi Bill, that's the irony of storm sails. In building conditions we can be quite comfortable sailing with the big Genoa part furled, but those same conditions are beyond what we want to face on the fore deck handing that huge sail. A hard call. When having a new 150%

headsail made I told the sail maker not to weight the cloth for the moderate winds the full sail would be used in, but for the strong winds it would be used in partly furled. Their first try was way too light and I sent it back and they provided the right weight at their cost.

Hello Stephanie,

Is your counter damaged?  Ours was fine, so when we replaced all the electronics in 2013, we kept the counter.

All we did is relocate the counter to the starboard side, to the right of the Amel speaker.  Works nicely, it illuminates at night, and we use it almost every day.

On new Amels, they now install a counter from the maker of the anchor gypsy, I believe.

Kent , Your boat is a later model , perhaps they wired it differently. On mine ,if I shut off the batteries , I have no power to the sump. It would be fairly easy to run a wire from the battery side to the beaker in the engine room.

On the electrical drawings from Amel, it shows the sump pump coming from the battery side of the switch.  That's how Kristy was wired when I got her.  I have also moved the charger DC output cables to the battery side of the switch so I can turn everything off but the charger.

Hi all!

We are in the process of changing all of the electronics aboard SM 2000 353 "Indecent.". I have searched the older e-mails for some hints on what to do relative to the chain counter and the display unit.  I am aware of the manufacturer's  US office http://www.ifmefector.com.  Does anyone have any newer information  -- I went back as far as 2012 but did not find any info about changing out the entire system.

Alexandre,
No chance of contaminating the
oil.  The cooler bolts to the outside of the transmission
housing. When you remove it, there is no opening to the oil
chamber.  The cooling happens through the metal housing of
the transmission.
Because there is no seal under
the cooler there is no gasket there either.  The only
gasket needed is to seal the cover of the cooler to the
cooler box itself.

Very easy to remove.  No
issues.
 Four
bolts, and two hoses.
My hoses were in good shape, I
didn't replace
them.  They are standard reinforced
water hose, available from any
marine supplier. One brand
suitable would be Shields Rubber,
Series 135, Heavy Duty
Water Hose.  Or you can use
Trident 250/100 Flex Marine Wet
Exhaust and Water Hose, a bit
tougher with a wire
reinforcement to support the hose
through bends.
Measure the inside diameter.
 That and the
length will be all they need to
know.

identical, but I

which one I have.
 
My engine is the Volvo TMD22,
the
transmission
is a Hurth 250, later in
production known as
a
ZF 25M.  There
is
no external
oil
circulation
on this
model.
 The standard
installation is only
air cooled from
the transmission oil
through
the
case.  The
seawater cooler
is an afterthought,
just
bolted
to the
side of the case.
Heat from the
transmission oil
is
conducted
through the
transmission case, then
through
the wall
of the cooler to
the seawater that
flows
through
the
cooler on its way to the
engine.  By cooling
the oil,
the
seawater
cooler increases
the horsepower
rating of the
transmission.
If
your transmission has an
external shell
and
tube heat
exchanger, my
modification
doesn’t
apply. 
I got my
new cooler
from
Foley
Engines
in
Worcester, Massachusetts.
It sounds like
the one Eric is
talking about is
different than
mine.

missed.  Sure
enough, mine needed to be
replaced.
It's very
much
a
crappy
design:
 A cast
aluminum
box made part of
the
engine
galvanic
electrical
circuit.
 Not
surprising
that
it has
issues. I
have read rumors
that
there is a
stainless steel
version also available, but
that
would have
its own
problems.
 Stainless has a much
lower thermal
conductivity
than
aluminum, so it
wouldn't
cool
as
efficiently. 
I installed a new aluminum
cooler, and
modified
it to
accept a zinc
anode.

Alexandre,

No chance of contaminating the oil. The cooler bolts to the outside of the transmission housing. When you remove it, there is no opening to the oil chamber. The cooling happens through the metal housing of the transmission.

Because there is no seal under the cooler there is no gasket there either. The only gasket needed is to seal the cover of the cooler to the cooler box itself.

Very easy to remove. No issues.
Four bolts, and two hoses.
My hoses were in good shape, I
didn't replace them. They are standard reinforced
water hose, available from any marine supplier. One brand
suitable would be Shields Rubber, Series 135, Heavy Duty
Water Hose. Or you can use Trident 250/100 Flex Marine Wet
Exhaust and Water Hose, a bit tougher with a wire
reinforcement to support the hose through bends.
Measure the inside diameter.
That and the length will be all they need to
know.

Alexandre,
ZF and Hurth transmissions are
identical, but I
should be clear
which one I have.

My engine is the Volvo TMD22,
the
transmission
is a Hurth 250, later in
production known as a
ZF 25M. There is
no external oil
circulation on this
model. The standard
installation is only
air cooled from
the transmission oil through
the
case. The
seawater cooler
is an afterthought, just
bolted
to the
side of the case.
Heat from the transmission oil
is
conducted
through the
transmission case, then
through
the wall
of the cooler to
the seawater that flows
through
the
cooler on its way to the
engine. By cooling the oil,
the
seawater
cooler increases
the horsepower rating of the
transmission.
If
your transmission has an
external shell and
tube heat
exchanger, my modification
doesn’t
apply.
I got my
new cooler
from
Foley
Engines
in
Worcester, Massachusetts.
It sounds like
the one Eric is
talking about is
different than mine.

One of the things that Joel

keep on my
maintenance schedule
was inspection of
the Hurth
Transmission cooler
for corrosion.
Many thanks to him
for
mentioning
it, it is something
I
would have
missed. Sure
enough, mine needed to be
replaced.
It's very much
a
crappy
design:
A cast
aluminum
box made part of the
engine
galvanic
electrical circuit.
Not surprising
that it has
issues. I have read rumors
that
there is a
stainless steel
version also available, but
that
would have
its own
problems.
Stainless has a much
lower thermal
conductivity
than
aluminum, so it
wouldn't
cool
as
efficiently.
I installed a new aluminum
cooler, and
modified
it to
accept a zinc anode.

Same here...

In my case, the genset would start then instantly shut down and the "Field breaker" would pop.
So first check all the beakers.

May 19, I had an Onan technicien looking at the genset and he said it was the Control Board Part number 0305-0896
May 20 I went to Onan San Juan, the “last” control card (cost $976) (...)
The card arrived yesterday (june 6), I put it back and it worked.

Note: on Feb 28, 2015, Jean-Pierre Germain of SY Eleuthera, SM 007 wrote me: “as per Onan recommendation, I am ordering the Automatic Voltage Regulator. Part number 0305-0896 apparently, they fail far more regularly.” he was right.

I am considering ordering a spare (just wish it was cheaper), as without that card the genset is useless: there was 2 power failure at the marina, once had to use the engine to recharge the batteries, not to mention wasn’t able to exercise the scuba compressor, etc.

Would be easier if I had the hose already with the dimensions.

Anyway, when you removed the oil cooler, were there any chance that debris or what ever fall into the oil?
I have no idea how this is put together so my question might be stupid.
But since I just change the oil on the transmission, making sure I won’t have particle or anything falling in it.

Very easy to remove.  No issues.
 Four bolts, and two hoses.
My hoses were in good shape, I
didn't replace them.  They are standard reinforced
water hose, available from any marine supplier. One brand
suitable would be Shields Rubber, Series 135, Heavy Duty
Water Hose.  Or you can use Trident 250/100 Flex Marine Wet
Exhaust and Water Hose, a bit tougher with a wire
reinforcement to support the hose through bends.
Measure the inside diameter.
 That and the length will be all they need to
know.

 The
cooler is
the part where the white hose comes in and the
black hose
leaves.
The
complete cooler with gasket
and bolts was US$300 from Foley
Engines, http://www.foleyengines.com
The same cooler is
used on all
the
Hurth transmissions, it is described on my invoice as a
“Hurth Cooler
Kit” with no part number listed.

ZF and Hurth transmissions are
identical, but I
should be clear
which one I have.
 
My engine is the Volvo TMD22,
the
transmission
is a Hurth 250, later in
production known as a
ZF 25M.  There is
no external oil
circulation on this
model.  The standard
installation is only
air cooled from
the transmission oil through
the
case.  The
seawater cooler
is an afterthought, just
bolted
to the
side of the case.
Heat from the transmission oil
is
conducted
through the
transmission case, then
through
the wall
of the cooler to
the seawater that flows
through
the
cooler on its way to the
engine.  By cooling the oil,
the
seawater
cooler increases
the horsepower rating of the
transmission.
If
your transmission has an
external shell and
tube heat
exchanger, my modification
doesn’t
apply. 
I got my
new cooler
from
Foley
Engines
in
Worcester, Massachusetts.
It sounds like
the one Eric is
talking about is
different than mine.

One of the things that Joel
told
me to
keep on my
maintenance schedule
was inspection of
the Hurth
Transmission cooler
for corrosion.
 Many thanks to him
for
mentioning
it, it is something
I
would have
missed.  Sure
enough, mine needed to be
replaced.
It's very much
a
crappy
design:
 A cast
aluminum
box made part of the
engine
galvanic
electrical circuit.
 Not surprising
that it has
issues. I have read rumors
that
there is a
stainless steel
version also available, but
that
would have
its own
problems.
 Stainless has a much
lower thermal
conductivity
than
aluminum, so it
wouldn't
cool
as
efficiently. 
I installed a new aluminum
cooler, and
modified
it to
accept a zinc anode.
 You can

Alexandre,

Very easy to remove. No issues. Four bolts, and two hoses.

My hoses were in good shape, I didn't replace them. They are standard reinforced water hose, available from any marine supplier. One brand suitable would be Shields Rubber, Series 135, Heavy Duty Water Hose. Or you can use Trident 250/100 Flex Marine Wet Exhaust and Water Hose, a bit tougher with a wire reinforcement to support the hose through bends.

Measure the inside diameter. That and the length will be all they need to know.

cooler is the part where the white hose comes in and the
black hose leaves.
The complete cooler with gasket

The same cooler is used on all

“Hurth Cooler Kit” with no part number listed.

Alexandre,
ZF and Hurth transmissions are
identical, but I
should be clear which one I have.

My engine is the Volvo TMD22,
the
transmission
is a Hurth 250, later in production known as a
ZF 25M. There is
no external oil circulation on this
model. The standard
installation is only air cooled from
the transmission oil through the
case. The seawater cooler
is an afterthought, just bolted
to the side of the case.
Heat from the transmission oil is
conducted through the
transmission case, then through
the wall of the cooler to
the seawater that flows through
the cooler on its way to the
engine. By cooling the oil, the
seawater cooler increases
the horsepower rating of the
transmission.
If
your transmission has an
external shell and tube heat
exchanger, my modification
doesn’t apply.
I got my new cooler
from Foley
Engines in
Worcester, Massachusetts.
It sounds like
the one Eric is talking about is
different than mine.

One of the things that Joel
told
me to
keep on my
maintenance schedule
was inspection of the Hurth
Transmission cooler
for corrosion.
Many thanks to him for
mentioning it, it is something
I
would have
missed. Sure
enough, mine needed to be
replaced.
It's very much a
crappy
design:
A cast
aluminum
box made part of the engine
galvanic electrical circuit.
Not surprising
that it has
issues. I have read rumors
that
there is a
stainless steel
version also available, but
that
would have
its own
problems.
Stainless has a much
lower thermal conductivity
than aluminum, so it
wouldn't
cool
as
efficiently.
I installed a new aluminum
cooler, and
modified
it to
accept a zinc anode. You can
