NMEA 2000 Updating software
Adam Body
I have just installed a new chartplotter with prexisting NMEA 2000/ Seatalkng components and spent significant time sorting out a problem with as it turned out a simple solution. The solution to components not communicating correctly was to disconnect all but the one requiring the update, update that one, then continue in the same way with the other components. Hope this helps others in the group.

I have this for our A54. I don't get bothered by the noise, but the admiral is more sensitive to sounds.

If money were no object, I'd get an A60. Just kidding - after spending so much time and money making our A54 into exactly what we want and need, I wouldn't change her for anything. I enjoy the lifestyle associated with long term cruising and don't want to spend all that time "perfecting" a new boat.
To the original poster - I think that's the bucket of salt you need to take with everyone's responses. Most have never owned both and have prejudices based on their own love of their own vessel and their predictions of what they wouldn't like about other vessels (without actual live aboard experience). For example, after my last unexpected 31 day /4800 nm passage (because of covid, stopping for fuel was not an option), any thought I had about getting the Amel 50 is quashed because of the 50's small fuel and water tanks. But then again, I've never lived on a 50 and frankly, I think planning for a future coronavirus is a bit overkill. But that's my prejudice now. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Or, you can accomplish the same result using a couple of swimming noodles with a line through them and tied under the stern of the boat.

Hi Jamie, We have used this over the past 5 years. We were for 2 years in Port Corbieres, Marseille and then wintered 3 years in Marina de Ragusa, Sicily. The Slap Silencer has 4 simple cords for easy attachment to the stern side upright rails, does get growth of algae which cleans off easily. This is available online. US product “www.slapsilencer.com” I would recommend this if you are in a marina for a week or more. We pack it away after fresh water wash and dry in supplied bag under our master bunk. You will see that the Slap Silencer is more than a piece of canvas. We have not needed it whilst we have been at anchor here for the past few months as we are always pointing into the breeze and small waves coming off shore.
Very Best

We owned a 53 (2000 version) for 12 years. With her we spent 4 years going around the med, one year in the red sea (primarily for diving) and cross the pond to spend 3 years in the Caribbeans where we sold her. We then bought a 54 in Greece and went around the world with her (live aboard) from 2014 to 2019. Both are excellent blue water vessels. I prefer the 54 for its more modern hull shape (8 to 9 Kn), giving you a true owners' cabin, more space in the front part (a double bed & 2 singles), 3 fridges, a real stay sail.....if money is no object

Re: New Thread on A54 fridge pumps (ATTN: OLIVER Vela Nautica)
Jamie Wendell
Well, I said I was not going to make any more comments on the A54 fridge pump issues until I get the BLDC (brushless motor) design working, but I have to make a new confirmation that seems to corroborate with many who have provided advice about the technical issues regarding the Danfoss and E51385 pump output voltages.
I said that I was always getting 24 volts at the pump output. I also said that I bypassed the E51385 in the sense that I now take power for my 12V pump from the 24V supply connection in the engine room (using a DC converter) and installed a simple relay to turn that power on and off. I just checked the voltage across my relay, which is driven directly from the E51385 pump output. It shows just about 12 volts, even across the very small coil resistance in the relay. So, while I still see 24 volts under no load at the E51385 pump output terminal, I see it is switching to 12 volts nominal under load. It is also clear that the pump I have draws too much power to be driven directly from the pump output terminals on the E51385. I cannot explain that voltage drop. Why do I see 24 volts at all if the compressors are sending 12 volts to the E51385 internal relays? I wish I had an internal schematic for the E51385. Not sure what turns on the 24-volt indicator lamp on the E51385 - has to be coming from the compressor somehow. Anyway, it appears my E51385 is OK, and Scott, Oliver, and I are marching forward with the brushless motor design. Thanks to all again, Jamie Phantom, A54 #44

Barry, I was reading this thread and saw your comment about the "Slap Silencer." You noted it was online, but where?
I have this problem with my 54, but mostly have become numb to the slapping in the aft cabin. The boat came with a very heavy canvas in a bag, and I suspect that is what it is for, but I have never tried it. Can you provide more details about your solution? Is my bag carrying the right thing, and if so how do I use it? Thanks, Jamie Phantom, A54 #44

Hi Bill?

In relation you your response in red about the Danfoss controller ... I believe you misunderstood my statement. I was referring to the current supply from the E51385 to Jamie's pump, NOT the current supply from the Danfoss controller to the E51385 which is 12V max 0.7A (because that Danfoss controller was designed to power a fan). The 12V pump Jamie referred to is specified as drawing 3.9A at 12V. The point I was trying to make is that 3.9A drawn from the E51385 to the Pump may be enough to damage the E51385. The 51385 is designed to operate at 1.2A.
I bought a spare E51385 a couple of months ago which is at home. I'm travelling at the moment, but will set it up and test on the bench in a few weeks to confirm what voltage a 'new' E51385 should supply under a 1.2A load.

Thanks for that update Scott. As I noted previously, this measurement must be made under load conditions. The good thing is that it indicates that your 51385 is ok. Best regards, Dean

Re: New Thread on A54 fridge pumps (ATTN: OLIVER Vela Nautica)
Bill, in answer to your burning question. The 24V supply comes from the Danfoss interface on the pins adjacent to the F pins. So, numbering the pins on the pump interface From left to right as 1 thru 7. Pins 1,3 and 5 carry 24V supplied from Danfoss unit, pins 2,4 and 6 carry the F signals (0V or 12V) each of from the Danfoss controllers, pins 7 and 8 feed the pump and pin 9 is 0V (Negative battery terminal). If there is 24V on the F terminals then the Danfoss unit is indeed broken. I think this is highly unlikely. Wish I was on a boat to check too.

Hi Amelia, Totally agree with your spot on write up. No problem with our Volvo, thank's for the heads up on the turbo. The alternator can eat up a belt, we carry spares at about £8 each. A service engineer once recommended new pulleys. For the in harbor slapping we have a "Slap Silencer", works great. You can see it online. We can confirm that after over 3 months at anchor we are not bothered with slapping noise, it is minimal at anchor. We have a spare complete Bamar furler thanks to Mohammad and spare internal furler belts picked up in Hyeres. Only time that we have overpowered the furler is when some crewing novice furled. Visiting crew never like me as I will not let them play with the switches! Setting sails on a Amel 54 is not like any other boat. I have no experience of earlier Amels but my 54 which is hull 019 is a good boat without too many problems. The Volvo 110 runs sweet. The only problem so far was the Turbo boost pressure sensor that failed year 11. It was a simple swap for new in Martinique. About 350 euros. Although it took a while to diagnose the problem. I did replace the 175a alternator and have had a bit of dust from the twin belts, but I realigned it last year so fingers crossed. The Bamar furler for the genoa is a bit undersized but if one de powers the sail it is fine. One must not reef under load, so ease the sheet enough to be able to reef and then sheet in. I like the layout, the aft cabin is gorgeous. My only complaint is the slap under the counter which can be noisy in the aft cabin whilst in bed but not at anchor in my experience, mostly in harbour. In light winds she will go if well trimmed. In stronger winds she is great and with a bit of beam aft can really carry sail on a broad reach. She can do 200 miles a day. She is a big comfortable mile eater. I think that compared to the 53 she is slightly closer winded and a bit faster due to her waterline length and sail area displacement ratio. Slightly bigger boat with more volume, but apparently less storage. In my opinion there is tons of storage.... She is also easy on the eye in my opinion. Hi all. After 10 years and 50,000 + off shore miles in Ocean Pearl SM 299 I thought strongly and seriously about stepping up to a 54. However I was put off by following the posts on this site It seemed I would be buying trouble. While I had positive experience of 20 years with volvo the 110hp volvo in the 54 seemed a serious problem. The bamar furlers another issue Likewise the multitude of electrical and electronic issues. Also although I could possibly have avoided them, the number of 54 that had electronic and electrical upgrades concerned me. Complexity is an archilies heel in a yacht that cruises the more far flung regions. Rightly or wrongly I felt that many of these 54s were being converted into marina hopping med or Caribbean vessels Lastly, after considering all this I returned to my belief that in the SM, which was the culmination of a life dedicated to designing the perfect yacht for a couple to sail around the world, Henry had indeed done just that. OK my mistake on measuring voltage. I do, in fact, get 12.85v under load at the Frigoboat E51385 interface pump output. I was "hoping" that it was 25v so that I could put in a simple voltage divider and hopefully solve my problem.
