Thank you  Craig, Mark, Eric and Ian   (and Alex).  I really appreciate your help.

I also have the extra alternator for generating power while under sail.  It looks like I can remove it as one unit by undoing the two bolts that attach its framework to the C-Drive cross frame/beam.

Hi Alan,
I do have some turn on/off knobs. If you don’t pull the cover plate out when grilling you can melt these.
I am currently offering all spares as part of the oven sale.
Will let you know next week if I keep them.
Best. Barry

We are completing our full conversion to Lithium batteries next week on the Amel Caraibe dock at Le Marin, Martinique. Our Eno oven cooker is being replaced with the Italian made Horizon 3 Electric Oven with Induction Cooktop.
The Eno oven cooker is in perfect working condition and has had very little use. If any Amel owner could use this oven, make us an offer. Have arranged with the Amel Caraibe Le Marin workshop to store this oven for an Amel owner if needed. I have spare parts - jets, switches etc.
Also have 3 x 23.5 litre fibre glass (can visually see the gas level) LPG bottles which fit securely in the gas locker. I have many different Countries connectors to self refill these bottles.
Please make us an offer if any Amel owner could use this gear.

Hello Jarek,
our chain was delivered by WASI. I am not sure if they manufactured it in their company or if it was produced by Wälder. I think it was done by Wälder. We bought the chain in 2002 and sailed in tropical waters in 2005, 2008 and 2009. In 2006 and 2007 we spent our time in Argentina and Chile with moderate water temperatures.
The chain is still in use today without any problems or signs of corrosion.
We never had any problems in tropical waters, no rust, no pitting. During long periods in the locker some parts of the chain showed small spots with a light film of initial rust but it was polished by the ground as soon as the chain was in use again. These spots never showed deep rust or pitting. In our opinion there are only two options for tropical waters: chromox or traditional galvanized steel.

how long do you have chromox from Walder Germany? Any issues with rust especially in tropical waters?

An RSVP is requested. Click here to RSVP

Description:

All,

It is my great pleasure to announce that Olivier Beaute will present at our first ZOOM Meeting of 2021. It will be held on 16 January 2021 20:00 to 21:00 UTC. Details:

Many members of the Amel Yacht Owners Group trained on their new Amels with Olivier in La Rochelle. Many of us relied on Olivier as the manager of Amel SAV. And, a substantial number of our Group have used Olivier's surveys when purchasing their pre-owned Amels. As most of you know, after a long and successful career with Amel, Olivier Beaute went into the survey business and established ATLANTIC YACHT SURVEY.

The topic of Olivier's ZOOM Meeting will be "An Amel Survey." His presentation will last about 30 minutes with 30 minutes for questions. Tilo Peters will monitor, queue, and ask Olivier your texted questions.

This meeting will be very good for all of our members.

  • Members who own an Amel will someday face having their Amel surveyed. These members will be interested in how to maintain and prepare their boat for a survey and some of the common things that are overlooked by Sellers in preparation to sell their Amel. This will be important information to know in advance of a survey.
  • Members who are searching for an Amel will need a survey to complete the purchase. These members will enjoy learning more about the survey process, especially the Olivier Beaute survey process. This should be extremely valuable.

I suspect that this meeting may book to capacity and urge you to register soon.

Re: ULTRA anchor 45KG or 35KG

Hallo Jarek,
we have the 45 kg Ultra connected to a chain 13 mm, steel material code 1.4462 (Duplex or Cromox), working load 88.5 kN, breaking load 177 kN made by Ketten-Wälder, Germany. Connector is the original Ultra Flip Swivel by Ultra Marine.
The original chain 10 mm , same material, is fixed to an 30 kg Bügel anchor both made by WASI, connector is an WASI powerball.

We made best experiences with the latter system on our circumnavigation done with a 12 m aluminum sloop. Except one little aspect: the tiny little grub screws of these power-balls are made of stainless steel 1.4401 (316) meaning the threads of these screws corrode in warm water. You have to have a look on them and change them from time to time.

Hello again. I have the WASI 10 mm that came with the boat, but I am planning to change it for the Cromox 10 mm. since I want 100 m. rather than the 70 that I currently have.

Thank you all for information and advice. Could you share what type of chain (size, material, break load) you use for 45KG and 35KG. I like to keep 8mm but go for stronger 8mm G70 with 70KN break load (less weight on the bow)
Look forward to your reply

Craig forgot to mention that there is a ring fixed directly above the C Drive (he told me that) which is there to lift the C Drive or take its weight should you need to do so. You may have to dig around in the soundproofing to find it. I have just finished checking my mountings and realigning everything. I found a few photos of Craig removing the C Drive from the boat and one showed how he put a rope round the C Drive cross beam to hoist it.  you may feel more comfortable taking the weight off the C Drive mounting using this system.

PS. To Craig. Thanks for all your help this summer about realignment.. I got home and bought a chain lift to have a proper go at the job. I had the Amel tool made, but on my Santorin the shaft coupling worked equally well. The coupling systems seem to be different on some of the SMs, especially with the shaft brake. One thing I found when double checking the alignment, was to reassemble the shaft coupling and Vetus coupling  with shorter (4" ) bolts. I could then slide the whole assembly on the drive shaft, across the empty space where the alternator pulley would normally be and found the ends of the Vetus  bolts slide neatly into the gearbox holes.

Re: Replacing C Drive mounts while boat is in the water.

eric freedman

The Vetus coupling shown in those photos is the one from Vetus. It is not the one that is mounted on the Amel’s. Amel machines the coupling shown in the photo to fit their engines. The one in the photo will not work. You need to get the correct one only from Amel.

Paul,

Changing the C-Drive mounts is quite straightforward and pretty much exactly as Craig describes.  See the picture below:

Remove the nuts circled in Red above from the mounting studs. Then remove the mounting stud from each C-Drive mount.  Then remove the bolts circled in Yellow that bolt the C-drive mount to the engine mounting frame.  Once you do that you can slide the old C-Drive mounts out from under the mounting frame and slide the new ones in.  As I understand it, the mounts should be adjusted so they are just barely starting to support the weight of C-Drive.  If you crank them up too much you will put strain on the rubber hose that is keeping the water out of the boat.  To relieve any strain, you can loosen the top two hose clamps on the large rubber hose (water will come in) and they tighten them back up.

All of the documents that I uploaded to the old Yahoo forums were transferred here when we moved off Yahoo so they are here somewhere.  In order to make it easier to find, I just created a new Photo Album called Engine to C-Drive Alignment here:  https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/album?id=259361
