Re: Engine Battery Drain - Is it the Prop Shaft Alternator?

Clive Chapman

You could try disconnecting the engine start battery and see if the voltage drop continues. That would establish if the continuing volts drop is actually due to a dead battery or because there’s an unexpected load remaining connected to the battery (alternator exciter coils maybe? Alternator regulator failed?).

I don’t know the Amel electrical systems so am basing this on a reasonable knowledge of car electrics.

Engine Battery Drain - Is it the Prop Shaft Alternator?

Alan "Woody" Wood

We're currently in a marina, on shore power with the battery charger on.. and the starter battery (2 year old Victron 110ah) has suddenly died - showing less than 2v! and reducing 0.01v every 5 minutes).

We had our Valeo prop shaft alternator bench tested recently by a local electrician and put back.  When he replaced it, the switch for the generator had been reversed.. ie 'on' was now 'off' and vice versa.  I suspected the diode had been reversed or damaged in the re-istallation so disconnected the prop alternator hoping this would stop the drain - it didn't - so maybe it wasn't the problem.

The Mastervolt Chargemaster 24/100 has had intermittent display problems lately although still keeping the house batteries at 100% throughout.. could that be related?

I am at a loss at what investigate next - any suggestions?

Cheers

Re: FEIT Freshwater Pump Troubleshooting

Ian,

Here are a few things for you:
  1. You should not need to prime it, but you usually need to open a tap so air can escape.
  2. The accumulator tank should be set with the pump OFF and the system depressurized. Set the tank pressure at Cut-Off pressure less 15%.
  3. If the one-way valve is leaking it can cause this cycling and constant running because the pressure and water will leak back into the tank.
  4. The Square D pressure switch can be purchased in many places in the world.

You might have rust in the pressure tank going into the diaphragm.

Our FEIT freshwater pump won’t stop cycling. I have tried:

- adjusting cutin bolt spring
- cleaning the diaphragm
- changing out the D Squared switch
- playing with contacts
- sanding the brushes
- spraying with Corrosion X and WD40

When I tap it with a rubber hammer it stops. But then starts again when a tap is opened and won’t stop until another tap of the breaker is switched off.

The only thing left to try is the Accumulator tank pressure. Tomorrow I will pump it to about 12 PSI.

Two questions:

1. Last time I serviced the unit, it did not need priming. But if it does, what is the best way?
2. Is there anything else I might try?

Many thanks.

Hello Jared.
All I dd was to cut part of the fibre glass under de bow pulpit inox plaque. With just that centimeter in the aft part and also another cut of fibre and inox in the outer forward side, the shank of the anchor fits perfectly well. I am sending picture. If you need more explanations, let me know.

Thank you  Craig, Mark, Eric and Ian   (and Alex).  I really appreciate your help.

I also have the extra alternator for generating power while under sail.  It looks like I can remove it as one unit by undoing the two bolts that attach its framework to the C-Drive cross frame/beam.

Hi Alan,
I do have some turn on/off knobs. If you don’t pull the cover plate out when grilling you can melt these.
I am currently offering all spares as part of the oven sale.
Will let you know next week if I keep them.
Best. Barry

We are completing our full conversion to Lithium batteries next week on the Amel Caraibe dock at Le Marin, Martinique. Our Eno oven cooker is being replaced with the Italian made Horizon 3 Electric Oven with Induction Cooktop.
The Eno oven cooker is in perfect working condition and has had very little use. If any Amel owner could use this oven, make us an offer. Have arranged with the Amel Caraibe Le Marin workshop to store this oven for an Amel owner if needed. I have spare parts - jets, switches etc.
Also have 3 x 23.5 litre fibre glass (can visually see the gas level) LPG bottles which fit securely in the gas locker. I have many different Countries connectors to self refill these bottles.
Please make us an offer if any Amel owner could use this gear.
Best Regards

Re: ULTRA anchor 45KG or 35KG

Martin Birkhoff

Hello Jarek,
our chain was delivered by WASI. I am not sure if they manufactured it in their company or if it was produced by Wälder. I think it was done by Wälder. We bought the chain in 2002 and sailed in tropical waters in 2005, 2008 and 2009. In 2006 and 2007 we spent our time in Argentina and Chile with moderate water temperatures.
The chain is still in use today without any problems or signs of corrosion.
We never had any problems in tropical waters, no rust, no pitting. During long periods in the locker some parts of the chain showed small spots with a light film of initial rust but it was polished by the ground as soon as the chain was in use again. These spots never showed deep rust or pitting. In our opinion there are only two options for tropical waters: chromox or traditional galvanized steel.
