Also what non bauer filter do you use?

read the dive blog about using the compressor and what to
look for. I found it informative and the reason I extended
the filter use to 50 fills.

Alexander, I have the same compressor on
my

boat
although not as beautifully installed, I don't
have

to open
the water traps during filling and also the
filter

seem to
last  about 50 fills, the only way to check the

filter is by its added weight,
so an accurate small
weight

scale is the only requirement
there.

Humidity in southern
Australia is

low and
I'm using synthetic oil, this may explain
the

difference.

compressor.





Since I had
one onboard and I want everything in working

condition I had it serviced
($2k), but I am not sure I
would

add one as it is not so easy
nor inexpensive to use.



1) every 7
minutes while filling up a tank you have to
open

valves
and it takes 40 minutes to fill up a tank (and is

very noisy).



2) have to change the filter every 8 tanks and
they have
a

limited shelf life of 1.5 year, I calculated
the
operating

cost to fill up a tank at about $5 (not
including the

purchase of
the compressor and its big maintenance).



In the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and even
here in

Dominican Republic
there are stores in many places to
fill

up tanks and they cost between
$5 and $10.



I think it is good if you are
in remote places or scuba
a

lot.



But I do
believe it is important to have scuba tanks
onboard

in
case (like it happened to me) you have the chain wrap

around a coral head, anchor
stuck, etc.

Dear all,
PILGRIM's hull number is 26. The C Drive has been perfectly working for more than 5000h with 20W40, same as the engine. Never got a water ingress or oil leakage. Maintenance of the seals as per manual.
For the happy owners who benefits of the initial design I would encourage to stay simply with the original oil recommendation.
You will note that Olivier is speaking of a new C drive manufacturer for recent production. This manufacturer may have thought beneficial to reduce the size of the gears and consequently is obliged to use high contact pressure oil.... or he is not used with Amel design rules and has simply used common practices of gear box makers. Honestly our C drive looks more like a harvester system than a racing car gear box.

As Bill says frequently, Captain Amel knew what was the best for a yacht design. Not sure current Amel managers are going the right way for sailors travelling in remote areas of the planet, neither with regard of long term value for money.

I do not resist to give another example: When my genoa gearbox broke after 21 years of good services, Amel support proposed me a new one, bare without electric engine, for 7000€. I said wowww and they informed me that I should be happy because the new ones from Selden were quoted 12000€They were unable to deliver, even on special order, my broken gear. I just got this gear in bronze-berillium machined by an Athenian specialised shop ( yes it exists very professional you know the lis little harbour called Piraeus) and the complete repair including seals replacement costed ... 700€. As I dismantled the box by myself and surveyed the reassembly I am sure of what I got. By the way all other gears were like new after 21 years in service; the one who broke was due to a small titanium pin which went lose and went in the gear teeth. I am confident for next 20 years
I guess the poor new Amel owners will never be able to do the same with their off the shelf gearboxes.

A possible item is the C Drive cross member is loose. Another possibility is the engine is out of alignment. Check that the Flex coupling bolts are tight.
We had the same noise and we ended up breaking the shaft and ruining the flex coupling.

Looking at the prop spinning, it looks good. It is clean. The blades spin freely (original AutoProp H6, I think), and do not seem to have excess play in them. The C-drive oil is not milky. The Volvo engine seems and sounds OK.

We are stuck, afraid to put to sea with this problem. Will probably haul out and look. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi take a look in the engine room is there black dust under the coupling? 
When you put the boat in gear do you get a thud kind of a noise. When running the motor does the motor and the C drive shake ? 
If yes to these questions split the coupling and see if the rubber bushing are worn or has a coupling lug broken. 
Give how close you are to Porto Rico
That is a much better and cheaper haul out and labor market.

Yes, Bob. I think Amel originally wanted to make it simple and tell us we could use the exact same oil as we do in the engine and Generator. Sort of a simple solution. And it is true, the diesel engine oil will perfectly lubricate the C Drive.

But maybe gear oil will do the same job of lubrication AND help prevent water seepage.

I am happy with this information.

boat although not as beautifully installed, I don't
have

to open the water traps during filling and also the
filter

seem to last  about 50 fills, the only way to check the

filter is by its added weight, so an accurate small
weight

scale is the only requirement there.

Humidity in southern Australia is

low and I'm using synthetic oil, this may explain
the

onboard

in case (like it happened to me) you have the chain wrap

around a coral head, anchor stuck, etc.

I am no expert, but I suspect that the heavier gear oil (80/90) will seal better at the wear bushing and shaft O Ring, eliminating some water passing through to the C Drive.

I am really very happy to have accidentally learned this. It is a shame that there is zero downstream communication from Amel on this sort of thing. I guess it pays to hang out at an Amel facility and soak up new information.

On our next haulout, we will use 80/90 gear oil for the C Drive and Bow Thruster.

That Interesting Bill.

The owner manual (which came with the boat) says to use 15W40 (which I used last March)
Near the C-Drive there is a plate saying to use 20W40

I just look at the invoice from Amel Martinique (Sept 2012) they indeed used 80W90
They also used 80W90 (instead of the 90) for the Bow Thruster.

I also would like to hear the reply you will obtain from Amel La Rochelle, hope it is not an overlook from Martinique.

Note: purchase the new foam for the Bow Thruster, Amel La Rochelle sells only 1 type now.

When I used to Cave Dive, the dive shops always had a lot of ice floating in the tank of water where they overfilled the tanks. Many dive shops that I have been to over the years fill tanks immersed in water.

Alexandre,  But for my 2p worth of 30 years as a sports
diver and several as a police  diver, the only time I
tended to be nervous was when filling cylinders, in the
thousands over the years.From worrying about getting rid of
the heat build up in the compressor and cylinders, and I was
usually working in a cold environment  in Ireland, to  the
bleeding and watching the system when filling.As
these compressors are light a position on deck for filling
would allow a better flow of air to be pushed through by the
fan to cool the compressor. Parts and service of compressors
tend to be expensive. Considering the cost would an initial expendature
on say 4 cylinders and filling them at dive shops where ever
you are, be a better option for the first year.. Regards

Is anyone else aware of this? It is a very interesting change.

I have not confirmed with La Rochelle.

boat although not as beautifully installed, I don't

to open the water traps during filling and also the
filter

seem to last  about 50 fills, the only way to check the

filter is by its added weight, so an accurate small

Australian diver on his story on changing the oil from
mineral to synthetic and also great tips on the Bauer
compressor that he had used for many years, you might find
some good advice on why your compressor is taking so long to

With regard to the filter, I think
the manual is on the conservative side with regard to the
number of fills. The blog details a non Bauer filter you can
get that reduces the cost considerably.
