Re: A54 fridge circulation pump
I'll move the conversation to a new thread, but quick responses to close this one out. Please respond on the new thread entitled: "New Thread on A54 fridge pumps (ATTN: OLIVER Vela Nautica)"
Arno - what I like about Oliver's solution, if he can share info and we can replicate it, is that it uses the same pump head/water moving parts from the Flojet. I have two remaining Flojet pumps so I will place one complete original flojet pump next to the Frankenstein brushless pump. On my A54, two Flojets are placed side by side because I think Amel knew they die quite often. With the proposed setup, if the brushless pump dies in the middle of nowhere, I can quickly switch things over from one pump to the other, as I do now. Robert - we need a 10mm to 8mm "D" shaft reducer. Know where we can get that? Mark - I have the Marco pump for my FW system with an expansion tank. You NEED the expansion tank otherwise you will get mysterious leaks due to overpressure from the fw toilet water solenoids slamming shut when the pump is running. I got the 2l stainless one. As it relates to using a Marco for the fridge pump, another A54 Garulfo tried and the Marco overheats and dies even faster than the Flojet. So no go there. Brent - My understanding is that, despite the insulation replacement, Oliver is now getting 75% duty cycle now that he's in the tropics (versus single digit duty cycle in Portugal?). Regardless, if there's a brushless pump that doesn't die every 5-6 months, I will crawl on my knees to get it (kidding, sort of). I will say that my galley freezer/fridge has been turned off now that we're near reasonably well stocked grocery stores. This made a huge difference in energy consumption and pump duty cycle. The A54 setup has the water hoses daisy chained, whereas Frigoboat wants you to run them parallel. Earlier, my saloon freezer never really got that cold. I assume it's because by the time the cooling water got to it, the other two units had already heated up the water quite a bit. Now I just run the aft most front opening fridge and the saloon seat freezer. This makes a huge difference as the insulation on the galley top loading freezer is terrible as Oliver mentioned. Ours was soaked because the fridge would accumulate a lot of condensate water at the bottom and the junction between the stainless "box" and the PVC pipe that allows the compressor lines was NOT sealed well. I know this because after I cleaned out the box, water was bubbling UP from the insulation into the box at this junction. I sort of fixed it by applying sika291 at this junction and also filling the inside of the PVC (where the compressor lines run) with sika291. I had used the same expanding foam as Oliver prior but that simply got soaked and moldy. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: A54 fridge circulation pump
Hi Carina, Oliver posted a very good 2 part video series on YouTube about the whole process. It isn’t for the faint of heart but it really does seem to be a worthwhile upgrade to extend your pump life and time on batteries. Enjoy!

Jeremy Spurr
Hi Barry - this may be of interest - shortly to be launched by GN Espace - designed to fit in the same space envelope as the Force 10 gas and ceramic hob versions that fit the A50 and same dimensions as their OceanChef 3 gas variant . I believe it is GN who package the Miele units fitted to the A60s and have now produced this more compact unit of own manufacture with electric oven and induction hob

The Marco pump works great as a fresh water pressure pump and is much quieter than the Amel OEM water pump. However, it is significantly noisier than the Flojet. You will wan to start thinking about some sound insulation when you use it as a raw water pump for the refrigeration system.

Scott, I know this thread should not be used and we should create a new one. I just "lost" 2 more refrigerator pumps. I took them to a motor rebuild shop in Annapolis, and they told me they are worn beyond repair.

I saw your post about taking the leap into the brushless motor world, hoping to solve the pump dilemma. I will tell you I finally got the parts Oliver recommended - after almost 6 months. Unfortunately the motor he suggested has a 10mm diameter shaft. We need an 8mm shaft, so I cannot use that unless I create a reducer of some sort or order a different motor. I will try to get the controller working for curiosity, but without the ability to connect the motor to the pump, I will likely have to abandon the project and just keep buying Flojet 4106 pumps (the newer version I believe, vs 4105 series). I did notice that March Pumps offers a centrifugal pump driven by a brushless 24V motor. Although it is a bit expensive and only suitable (in its normal non-self-priming service) for salt-water cooling where the pump remains flooded, it might be worth buying it and using only the motor. If it works it would stop us having to buy many $100 motors that go bad in 6 months or less. The motor looks as if it will work directly with a steady 24V supply - no custom controller needed. Of course, the shaft would have to work here as well. If we can get the shaft to mate, all we would need is a relay to turn on the pump via a 24V supply in the engine room and the Frigoboat 12V output signal. May be worth a shot.................. Funny. I think I told Mark & Cindy about raising a Cellular WiFi Access Point device on a halyard in a lock & lock box for better cellular reception. And, I didn't put in in my book. No problem. All of the old Yahoo messages, files, and photos can still be found here on the new forum. You just have to use the "search" function. Search Messages, Files, and Photos separately using keywords like "engine alignment" and you will find a ton of great information.
Here is a link to the File folder with the information that I uploaded: https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/files/Yanmar%204JH3-HTE%20Alignment%20Information Last, it is customary on this forum to have a "signature" at the bottom of your post with your name, your boat's model and name, and your current location. It not only makes the forum "friendlier" since we know who we are talking to but it also helps to know what specific boat you have and where you are in the world. Another Amel owner might just be in the same port as you and willing to lend you a hand! You can set up this signature to happen automatically whenever you post in your Profile. Good luck with the alignment! -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Re: Slide Hammer
Hi Kent, unfortunately, I have quite a bit of very recent experience with them. I used to “rent” them from the local auto shops (you pay a full price deposit, use the tool and then return it for a full refund so the rental is gratis). I’ve used them to pull wheel bearings, CV Joints and wheelhubs out from the very solidly rusted vehicles up here in the Canadian winters (they use a fair bit of salt which makes it somewhat challenging). Last week, I tried to rent one to pull the gimbal bearing off my Mercruiser Alpha One inboard/outboard sterndrive on our motorboat that my daughter accidentally sunk last summer while Jen and I were away in Europe. (Don’t forget to put the plug in the boat BEFORE you run it down the railway!) Anyway, due to the Covid stuff, they’ve all stopped renting tools so I ended up buying one at the local Princess Auto (our version of Harbour Frieght). I’ve seen that their version, is the same as what I got. It's on sale this week for the equivalent of about $60 USD.
I whaled away at that damn gimbal bearing (it’s about a 4” by 1” bearing inside a long tunnel of a race and was VERY severely corroded in there without much luck. The one I have has a 5 lb slide (the more the merrier) and I let it soak in PB Blaster for about a week and even fashioned using a 4 ton hydraulic jack to try to lever the thing out using the attachments of the slide hammer and a cross bar I built using metal and a 4x4 post…. All I ended up doing was snapping four 3/8” u-bolts like they were made of butter. I finally gave up and called in the pro.. who showed up with the exact same slide hammer as I had, he put it on and gave it two huge whacks and it came right out! To be fair to me, I didn’t try it for the 3-4 days before he showed up and it was sitting in PB blaster but he did whale away at it harder than I could (he used very thick gloves which helps cushion the blow). He said that he’s never had a gimbal bearing stick that he hasn’t been able to get out with that tool. Here’s the link to what I got. https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/10-way-slide-hammer-puller-kit/A-p8309262e but I am very sure I saw the same thing on the Harbour Freight website too (PA and HF seem to use the same companies even though they aren’t related). Normally, I find their cheap Chinese tools don’t stand up well but I was very impressed with how strong this was - especially considering I had a 4 ton jack pulling on those little arms and it didn’t even leave a scratch on them. My pro has been using the same set for 5 years and says he’s never had an issue with it either. There aren’t any instruction manuals with it but those three arms go on that black three armed attachment that gets threaded on (after the round disk) to the end of the slide hammer rod. The round disk, winds down, levering the arms apart so that it can grab the inside race of the bearing… when you have got ALL of the play out of it, you just whale away at it as hard as you possibly can and the shock breaks the bond and out she comes…. DO wear very thick gloves as that thing makes your bones ring! The good thing is that after a set of plugs, a new distributor cap and the new gimbal bearing, the boat is working perfectly now… love to get you and Iris out for that Canal trip to see our fascinating locks if the damn border ever opens up again! Enjoy Maine! I’ve flown over that whole area up there and it’s on my bucket list. Brent Cameron, Future Amel owner & Amel Owner's Registry Moderator

Re: Iridium GO! and the iPhone 11

Thanks, Tom. I just spent an hour yesterday on the phone with PredictWind in New Zealand. The problem is a VPN connection. Norton offers a particularly tenacious VPN product that turns on “on demand” which means you can turn it off and it will turn back on by itself. In the end, I just deleted the Norton VPN from my iPhone and it would then connect immediately to the Iridium GO! Unit.

Onan muffler reducer
Thomas Kleman
On SM2K 422, the Onan MDKAV uses a Vetus Waterlock LP50. The exhaust line into the muffler is thus 50 mm. The muffler outlet has a 50 to 40 mm reducer which connects to the genset exhaust hose. In buying my spare muffler I want to also have this spare reducer but don't know where to get it. It appears to not be a Vetus product. It looks as though it was glued in as the mufflers outlet tube has no inner threads.......ideas ?

A good laugh at my expense
When in an area with low or almost no bars on the cell phone (we use for data), I’ll often put the phone up the mizzen mast to improve the line-of-sight to the cell tower.
On this occasion, I mistied the bowline knot and when I went to pull the phone down, this happened.
So I made this:
It is two boat poles (shown unextended), two pieces of PVC pipe (I had laying about) and a wire coat hanger. This is all held together with duct tape. Cindy put me up the main mast. I extended the boat poles and after a few tries I was able to snag the bag with the phone in it using the coat hanger hook. Pulling the phone toward me, I could then lower it to the deck.
Yet another reason to sail a ketch!
With best regards,
Mark

Re: Freshwater pump
Mike Longcor (SV Trilogy)
Hi Eric,
Did you end up going with the Aqua King II? Are you happy with it? I'm looking to replace my freshwater pump as well and the Aqua King II premium 4gpm (#4148) or supreme 5gpm (#4158) look like pretty good options. I do not have an accumulator tank. Also, were you able to wire it so the indicator lamp on the control panel lights up? (Not essential, just curious. Our current pump does not). Cheers, Mike Longcor SV Trilogy SM23 Opua, NZ
