Thanks Will.
I reckon that the leak is from one of the oil seals on the crankcase. The pump works fine and has only 608 hours on it.
However if I go to the trouble of taking it out then it should get a full service at the same time; new low and high pressure seals and valve check.
This is something that I could do myself so long as I have the parts...
I am hauling out on Monday; not sure I will find anyone here. Looks to me like either
1. I send it to a repair shop in Athens. Anyone know one?
2. I take it in my bag to the UK and either service it myself or have it serviced.
3. Leave it on the boat and source the service kit in the UK and service it myself in the spring.

I had the same issue after leaving Martinique for the state last year.  The CAT pumps are built in the USA and are rebuildable, however I was not able to find a dealer in the USA to rebuild mine.  After purchasing a new pump ($1,300) I learned that's almost every carwash in America has that pump and the folks who service carwashes will rebuild them for you.  BTW, they rebuild them in Martinique regularly. Mine failed after testing the high pressure switch, which was working just fine but of course ran the pressure up beyond normal operating pressure.

I notice that you are in Greece but I would still check with a local automated carwash about service.

I second the Pettit spray below. This is bar far the best solution I have found for the prop.

Unfortunately, I also fell victim to the claims of Propspeed and completely wasted a couple of hundred dollars in Grenada. It barely lasted 3 months.

With best regards,

I tried PropSpeed 3 separate times. (They certainly are proud of that stuff!)

I had the same results as you. Very unsatisfactory. I tried everything, and finally found a decent solution.

image1.jpeg

I use the spray. About $35 US for a can.

I use the whole can on my underwater metal, usually 3 or 4 coats on the prop. I burnish the fully dried paint with a heavy duty scotch brite pad, to expose the zinc (not on the edges, but the flats of the blades).

In an entire season, not a single barnacle or growth of any kind on the prop. And the paint stayed adhered to my stainless prop. I don’t burnish the other underwater metals, and do have some growth on them, so the burnishing is important. I spray the prop once a year.

Looking for advice- I'm doing a bottom job in 6 weeks. Last year I used Propspeed on my Autoprop and 6 months later there was no evidence of it.....the barnacles however were flourishing. While I enjoy diving I like it better without a scraper in my hand.  Given the cost of Propspeed, 6 months is unacceptable. Would love to know if there's something better out there.

Re: Drain plug for C-drive and Spurs

Mark,

I have seen that 2nd O ring photo before. I do not remember where I saw it, but I think it is wrong. I took a photo of the V Plug/Bolt from Amel right after I unwrapped it. Here it is:
image.png
There were a total of 3 pieces. V Plug/Bolt, O ring, and metal washer.

I believe that Amel once told me that sometimes you have to use 2 metal washers, especially if reusing a metal washer which has been compressed.

Hi all,

I have some confusion about sealing the C-drive drain plug used with the Spurs linecutter.  I re-installed the plug with an O-ring and a Dowty washer (the metal washer with a rubber insert) but it is too loosely fitted when the V lines up and I do not think I can tighten it further to get the V correctly oriented.  I then found the photo below on my PC that shows an second o-ring and a sealing washer.  I also have a photo posted by someone else without these two.  Plus Nikimat does not show these. Which is correct? I have attached both photos below.

If anyone has corrections or additions, I would be happy to adjust and repost.

I thought I saw a list of various lip seals needed for the Amel SM, but now I can't find it. I'm doing overhaul of a few things and thought I should order a collection of Lip seals for now a future needs. Does such list exist? I assume different vintage might have some different measures but most should be the same I guess
If not maybe we together can make one, and maybe one for the various o rings needed when servicing various items aboard.

Jeremy,

You created a nice alternative BUT.

It looks like you used steel washers.  The original washers were aluminum as is the rest of the car.  Using dissimilar metals is inviting galvanic corrosion.  If you did use steel washers, I'd keep an eye on the assembly over the following months to see if any corrosion occurs.  If it does, it will only get worse.

Hi Brian

You'd be welcome aboard but we must depart on the 11/3 in order to hit our weather opening southbound.

I know there are a couple of other Amels around the area and I hope you can get connected.

I also know of one for sale up near Annapolis that I could put you in touch with the owner.

Paul,

People use the term "Pulley Puller" and "Bearing Puller" interchangeably.  They are similar tools and sometimes either one can be used to do the same job but in this case you really need a Bearing Puller to get into the narrow gap between the bearing and the gear in order to be able to pull the bearing off the shaft.

See the picture below of my 3 Jaw Pulley Puller next to my Bearing Puller:

No, Elja, just the top and bottom plates. The cast aluminum plates that are easily broken when servicing the gear boxes. In my experience, the gear boxes and gears are in good shape, but can’t be used if you break the corner off of the plate as Paul did. The nylon ones seem strong enough, but I haven’t taken the repaired gearbox apart again to see if they are reusable.
