Hi Pat,
Can you add the hull number of Shenanigans to your emails as SMs were built over many years and there a number of changes from time to time. If you put your hull number it's easier to identify its vintage.

My main problem, was that the swivel that the sail attaches to and is hoisted to the top of the mast, would only rotate a little less than 360 degrees and then
get stuck. I first flushed it out ,sprayed gunk, a degreaser in it, flushed more ,it did not help. Inside the interior of the furler there are two circlips that hold a approx. 5/16" x 1/2" plastic plug in place , that plugs the hole from which the ball bearings
can be removed .After I removed the plug and took the ball bearings out ,I found the bearings in good shape and reinserted them. I found that without the plug the furler spun freely. Apparently the plug was entering the path of the bearings, stopping the bearings
from turning. I turned the plug around and reassembled it and now the furler spins freely.
My second problem was that the gearbox was difficult to turn with the winch handle ,it turned ,but with more effort than it should take. Now I know one would assume the problem lies within the gearbox ,and I know owners have removed the bottom of the gearbox with difficulty and have even damaged the cover in the process. Here is what I found. First the interior of the gearbox can be accessed by simply unscrewing the aluminum housing that surrounds the stainless shaft in which you insert the winch handle. I put the gearbox in a vise and the shaft unscrewed easily with a monkey wrench turning the shaft This gives you plenty access to clean and inspect the gears . My gears turned freely without the shaft. The problem (friction ) was inside the shaft itself . I would have liked to remove the stainless shaft from the housing for a good cleaning ,but it did not come apart easily and not wanting to damage it ,I just sprayed gunk between the shaft and the housing ,worked it back and forth ,sprayed more ,work it more and it freed up nicely . I rinsed it out with water ,put a few drops of machine oil in, it and now rotates easily. So if the gearbox is stiff ,first unscrew the shaft to inspect the gearbox and see if the shaft itself may be your problem. Hope this helps, Pat SM Shenanigans

SM Bow Thruster Linear Actuator Control Box
Kevin Fox
In cleaning up the bow thruster area of Rascal I found that two of the screws holding the cover on the control box for the linear actuator were heavily corroded. I tried using a screw extractor and then a drill, but couldn't get enough force on them without fear of damaging the plastic enclosure. I resorted to cutting the cover off to get access to the screws. I found a replacement cover that's a perfect fit, and thought others might be interested.
I sourced the cover from Mouser Electronics in the US. A photo is attached. I selected a clear cover since I thought it would look neat, although black is also available.
The original cover says "verobox" on the inside, which might be useful in sourcing a replacement from other than Mouser.
-- I was able to remove the SNT label from the old cover with a razor blade, and it had enough adhesive on it to reapply to the new cover. I used some stainless screws and Corrosion-X in hopes of avoiding future issues. Now we'll have easier access to the fuse in this box if needed. Heave-to
We hove-to three times this Spring before crossing the Stream. Each time 35+kts from the N, 8-10 ft seas. She heaves-to like a dream, slipping directly downwind with the upwind slick preventing waves from breaking on the side of the boat. Only two small waves slapped us on the beam in a total of 180 hours hove-to. Able to sleep, cook, read. Then crossed the Stream in 10-15kts from the SE. In 35+ kts I have a handkerchief of jib and about a third of the Mizzen out with the Mizzen traveler halfway up the windward side. If you haven't experimented it's well worth your time to get a feel for it. Kent and Iris Kristy SM243

Just pulled into Huntington NY this morning. 8 days 22 hours from St Thomas. Kimberlite's 70,000 mile anniversary. The Gulf Stream was a pill. 30-45 knots easterly in the stream. When we fell off wave after wave I was so happy to own an Amel. It sure makes one heck of a sound. Nothing broken, everyone on board is well. Keep up the good work. Fair Winds, Eric

Lubrication of the Mechanism That Drives The Main Sail Furling Unit
There is black grease leaking from the the mechanism that you put the winch handle into to furl the main sail in or out when the gearbox and motor are disconnected. If I disassemble the unit by removing the bolts holding it together, is it going to require some complicated reassembly. Any help with how to grease that unit are much appreciated. I have a 1995 Super Maramu.
BTW, I found a brand new Bonfiglioli gearbox for the furling unit in a small town in The Netherlands. The price was only about $125. Furthermore it came with the shaft installed through theunit with a head piece that mates with the furler. I planned to use the shaft from the unit being removed, but it was seized in the unit. All other gearboxes I have found are in the $350 to $550 range. The Netherlands company is PLC2DAY.com Tele: +31-161-416125. They said that they had one more in stock. It's listed as used, but it's brand new. Regards, Bill Shaproski

Hi Nick, If it’s the same round microwave rack since 1999 we have a extra one on Aletes that we persistently need to find places to store. You are welcome to it, that is if we can remember where we stowed it last. I am not on the boat. From memory the diameter looks the same but the height on ours seems a little lower. Alex,
I can certainly take the normal consumables – filters, impellors, 1 belt. Most of the other items I don’t see that I’ll need in the foreseeable future as my engine has only 1975 hours. So if you still have any of these in November when we’re back in Grenada then I’d be happy to take them.

Re: air conditioning maramu
Hi Jacob,
I do think it would be fine to "T" off the engine raw-water intake to feed the A/C, especially if you'll only be using the A/C on shore power. If, though, you have a generator to power the A/C and plan to run it and the main engine together I suppose there could be insufficient water flow for both and you'd want a separate thru-hull for the A/C. In my case a prior owner had already installed another thru-hull for a water maker and I just ran a "T" off that for the A/C cooling water. He also installed a 6kw generator (with dedicated thru-hull) and we have on very rare occasions run the generator for A/C while we were motoring up the ICW in oppressive summer heat (and actually ran it all night at anchor - yikes, we're a trawler!) So I've got 8 thru-hulls for: 1. Main engine, 2. Generator, 3. A/C & Water maker combined and 4. Refrigeration. Plus, of course, 5 & 6. Toilet intakes and 7 & 8. Toilet discharges. Good luck with it, Craig
