Hi Barry;

Keep us informed. Lithium is definitely the way to go and offers tremendous upside to lead acid.. Addressing safety concerns, is our biggest design criteria and challenge. I have many years of experience with Lithium technology in other hobbies and have seen what lithium is capable of and its associated dangers.

Hi Teun and Mohammad,

Teun, I have an Australian friend who is having trouble getting insurance. Can you give me the broker that you went with, maybe the NZ broker as well. They just lost cover that they took out 2 months ago through a Caribbean crook. If anyone wants to know who the company was, please ask.

Mohammad, when the lock down is eased I am visiting Oliver who is anchored in front of me. I will be doing the same as your plan and designing the new lithium battery system. I will let you know what I find out as I progress. Things are getting better and easier every year.

Can you imagine what this lockdown is doing to people. In nearly 40 years Penny and I have never gone for a month without shopping or spending any money.

Teun,

You're using the VEConfig software to adjust the inverter low voltage cutoff? I have successfully changed that on the Inverter tab "DC input low shut-down". Then you have to "Send Settings" to the Quattro otherwise it won't save them.

If you are still having problems, I have a contact with Victron that is quite responsive. Maybe Dutch people don't like other Dutch people? ;) We've had over 30 emails back and forth. FYI he suggested 20v as the input low voltage cutoff and 21.5v as the input low restart.

Additionally, try here. This may be even better. They're almost as helpful as the AYOG :)

Re: Washing Machine and 50 htz

Teun BAAS

Scott,

Thanks for reply.

Not sure what software; the marine electrician in VANUATU installed it on my laptop. There is a hard wire connection in the cabinet over the sink. Anyhow in the settings you can set a minimum Voltage to activate the inverter and a shut down voltage. In my settings the “activate” voltage is 26.0V. You can lower it so we set it to 25.8V but even after saving the value automatically defaults to 26.0V.

I need the inverter at night as I use a CPAP machine; frequently in the evening my voltage is between 25.85 and 26.0. The inverter refuses to kick in and I get the red low voltage light blinking on the VICTRON panel. When I start the genset it is enough to kick the voltage over 26.0V to get the inverter working and I can immediately switch off the genset and all is OK.

What I do now is that I monitor in the afternoon the voltage and when it drops close to 26.10V I switch on the inverter although I don’t need it for several hours.

BTW although set @ 26.0V in reality the inverter will not kick on until it is minimum 26.08 or 26.1V

If I would be able to have permanently the minimum kick on voltage set to 25.8 or so then I would be fine.

BTW on the yellow highlight below: I am sure that Dutch people might not like other Dutch people; I don’t think we like people in general. I have a Tshirt with: “I like Coffee and MAYBE 3 people” 😊

Can you give me the Email address of your Dutch contact with VICTRON?

Re: Ral Nr. for the red boat stripe on A54

Lior Keydar

Dear Arno

Thanks a lot for your advice.
Actually I let the boat yard paint it incl. the red line on the top of the hull. I think they are very professional. They wrote me:

Band waterline and band rubbing strake:
sanding the strips band waterline including the rubbish
Painting with polyurethane cycle of the whole band SAME COLOR. He cannot see the original color but maybe it is possible to see it for a short after you polish it.

and It is also not cheap at all... I am almost sure that they will spray the color but I will anyway ask them to use AWL-GRIP

Regards
Lior

Re: Ral Nr. for the red boat stripe on A54

Arno Luijten

Hi Lior,

Sorry I just noticed you were talking about the red stripe at the waterline. It does not really change the story though. The original stripe is in the gelcoat. The sun gets reflected in the water and kills the red. Again AWL-Grip is the best paint for this and I would recommend spray-paining to keep the layer thickness as thin as possible.
But for the stripe you have an alternative by using striping (vinyl sticker) to replace the stripe. These vinyl foils are very durable and available in many colors.
Wrapping boats is quite popular for competition boats where they want sponsor names on the hull. For companies that do these things this would be a walk in the park is my guess.
Hope this helps you a bit.

Sails
Refrigeration
Standing Rigging

Lithium Solutions
I also asked Antoine RIOTON from Amel to do a presentation on the Amel 50/60
Another suggestion I had was to find an "...Insurance Adjuster, whose role it is to be the interpreter of the policy, protecting only the insurance company in order to minimize liability and expenses.  This expert is the one we need to come and talk to us about insurance and how to get the best policy for the most reasonable price." Re: Ral Nr. for the red boat stripe on A54

Arno Luijten

Hi Lior,

Most Amels suffer this problem. I was able to get the color back with 3M gelcoat restorer. That works quite good. However red is a notoriously bad color for being exposed to sunshine. Many red cars look bad after some years because of it.

The red stripe is actually gelcoat and the white stripe is a sticker (striping) on top of it. The white is very close to RAL9001. The red I'm not sure, I'm guessing RAL 3011, RAL3016 or RAL3004. The point is that if you are going to repaint it, you should use AWL-Grip 2-part paint as that is one of the few paints that will hold it's shine and color at this place.
Like with all paints the secret of your success is in the preparation. You cannot spend too much time on preparation. For myself I'm considering to have this spray painted professionally as polishing this rubrail every time is becoming quite the drag.
Painting it also releases you from the exact color match. As long as it resembles the other reds on the boat, it is fine. You will not get an exact color match anyway as the gelcoat colors react differently to daylight compared to paint colors. You can get RAL color charts from here: https://www.ralcolorchart.com/buy-ral-color-fan-deck

Re: Top loading galley fridge/freezer used as a fridge: No?

Arno Luijten

Hi Oliver,

I was amazed with your gutsy move to re-insulate the fridge-freezer in the galley. Impressive. For later Amel 54s this is much more complicated as these only have a half-lid on top of the fridge/freezer. I do like the replacement of the seal you did as I suffer the same problem with the poor closure of the seal. As we use this cabinet only as fridge the problem is not so bad as it was for you, but it is still annoying. Where did you get those seals from?

Quick question; am I correct in assuming you have no freezer below the settee in the main cabin? In your video you only talk about two cooling installations.

Kind regards,

Wow, Scott, quite the setup.  Certainty an interesting solution to use the pole to prevent the swinging if there is significant swell.  The much simpler alternative is the ATN Tacker over the furled up Genoa.   https://www.atninc.com/atn-tacker-sailing-equipment.shtml.    You can use that alternative for a few miles, yours for hundreds of miles.  I think the Tacker  makes the sail even more stable than your Solution since it fixes the tack of the sail at the forestay. Re: Insurance Companies

Teun BAAS

Update & final outcome on my insurance hassle:

Agent 6 came back and informed he could NOT help because my boat was not SPAIN based.

In total 2 of the 7 Forum recommended agents came back with exactly the same GERMAN insurer policy, premium etc. as my South Pacific agent had proposed earlier. This GERMAN carrier included a mandatory Dutch 21% Insurance tax while the boat is not in Dutch/EU waters. Prime example of Dutch greediness/extortion.

This (only) insurer was also not willing to give a “hard storage only” cover while I was willing to prepay for a regular 1 year sailing cover to be activated once she goes back in the water.

One of the 2 Forum agents was willing to give 5% discount out of his commission which I rejected as I am not nickel & diming over somebody’s livelihood and my current agent has always done a great & professional job.

So this issue is behind me for ONE YEAR but I am sure this will not get any better.

The Marina Shop – still waiting but informed me I needed new rigging

Gowrie – the RI agent reason #7 and the FL agent reason #3 and #4 but she is now working on this again.

Top Sail is the ONLY one coming back with a proposal which I am currently discussing as I would like to have additional hard storage coverage as long as I am not back to the boat (might be for another 4 to 6 months). Bill,

I think that insurance is a very big issue. I have now approached 6 to 7 agents/companies mentioned on our AYOG Forum and get very conflicting reasons of not willing to write insurance, like:

  1. You are USA citizen (although I pointed out several times I am NOT – I am a DUTCH citizen).
  2. But you do have a USA address (correct but I can give you legal non-USA addresses)
  3. You are NOT a USA citizen or resident (I am a LEGAL USA resident since 1986 and just had my green card renewed in February for 10 years) and this policy is specifically for USA citizens and/or residents and/or boats and/or ….
  4. You don’t have a USA address (YES I do – pls see the application)
  5. We don’t cover your navigational limits (AUSTRALIA etc.)

In talking to agents recommended via our AYOG forum I realize few of them remember/recognize the AMEL specific 6 or 7 watertight compartments so they tell me I need additional pumps on board; our overbuild rigging etc. etc.; and tell me I need to renew my rigging (just surveyed in December 2019 in COOMERA) because it is now 10 years old.

In all honesty: agency on #3 and #4 is now looking at this again after I wrote back I was a USA resident and had a USA address she replied she was going to look into this.

I know I am not the only AMEL owner having this problem – another member mentioned on the forum maybe looking at organizing our own group insurance (maybe via LLOYDS ?? they are used to write unusual policies)

It looks like it is not meant to be user replaceable however it may be possible.

Re: AMEL OLDER MARAMU AFT BERTH CONVERSION

We’ve got hull 105, i converted the vanity into a cabinet and then constructed a small wooden piece to nest in between.

Vanity conversion: https://svcerulean.com/2013/03/25/aft-cabin-vanity-conversion/

Then simply had my upholstery guy make up a new insert piece.

Pretty easy IMHO....i’ll head to the boat this week and grab a photo of the board and support leg it needs.

Hello,

You will find the video on our YouTube channel, look for SV Vela Nautica.

The water in the old isolation you saw around the pvc pipe was, what was left after 9 month of drying. So the water that once entered the old isolation more or less stays in there.

After remouving the old isolation:

1.
I build an outer layer with floorjet, kind of bitumen/aluminium sandwith foil compleatly humidity proof. This protects the insulation against kondensating humidity from outside. All seams are sealed with butyl tape, that stays flexible and tacky also in very low temperatures.

2. We placed the new insulation in this pocket.

3. Last we placed the stainless basin back and sealed it to the outer floorjet hull with butyl tape.

4. The insulation around the hole for the cooling tubes is also sealed with fat butyl tape. And because this point is a weakness and kondensation tends to build up around the cooling tubes, I placed 10cm polyurethane foam under the freezer and blew expanding foam along the tubings. Dont cut this foam. The surface is waterpoof as long as its not cut.

5. Its worth to place a waterproof DS18b20 temperatur sensor along with the tubes, so you can install a more modern temperature controll later.

Oliver,

Just watched your video - that insulation replacement seems like a big job! But the results seem to make it worth it?

One question for you about the big hole on the bottom for the compressor lines: did you fill that big hole in with something? Otherwise it would seem that all of the cold air would flow out of it.
