Re: Cleaning the fuel tank

On a related note.

I'm looking for the right material to replace the gaskets on the inspection ports.  Diesel is pretty hard on most gaskets.  I've tried two different "rubber" materials and have not been happy with either of them.  The second one was Nitrile, grade 60A. It was specifically recommended by the technical guy at Rubber-Cal for being best for deisel resistance, but it has deteriorate after a year or so.

Has anyone found a better product?

Pat!
we cleaned our tank by opening the inspection hatch and pumped out the rest with a hand pump same as on our outboard tank. We used a fuel hose with inner diameter the same as the outer diameter on the hose with the hand pump to make it reach down the tank. I had a length of Aluminium tube that fitted well into the fuel hose so it became very easy to position the end at the lowest point I got out most of the fuel less than half a liter left then I toke a broom with a cloth and cleaned the tank, looked as new after that. total time a few hours.

I had the same fault code with the last digit being "0".  I was able to lube and free up the actuator.  It could also indicate a bad sensor or another turbo related issue.  Take a look at the attached and be sure to read the comments that I added at the time.  Good luck with the repair.

Re: Cleaning the fuel tank

Eric, There is at least one port on the top of the tank. It has never been cleaned, and since there is only a few gallons in the tank I thought it was a good time . I am not interested in polishing or saving the fuel ,just want to suck out any water or sludge that may be in the tank. My filters have also be pretty clean when changed and I have never at fuel issues, but it seems like a good preventive exercise.
Another issue is my filter is about a foot above the bottom of the tank, so if my fuel level is below a foot and I change my filter, fuel will not fill the filter, and if I fill the filter, it simply flows back to the tank, so I am going to lower the filter as much as possible . I was wondering if most filters are installed as low as possible. If I ran out of fuel, I would have to put in probably forty gallons or more to get fuel up to my filter. I suppose a inline pump would solve this as well.
Thanks,
Pat

Thanks Mark. It’s pretty much what I did except I used WD40 and did not spray at the same time as moving the arm up and down – maybe I should try that. Maybe I should use Corrosion X instead?

I just had mine professionally cleaned – it cost USD500 and took several hours with some pretty sophisticated looking gear, and involved negotiating baffles in the tank. Good luck!

Re: Volvo warning

I looked up fault code MID 128, SID 27, FMI 1 and it is something to do with the Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT). A Swedish forum said to WD40 and “exercise” the lever which I did but I still get the error (unlike the person on the forum with the same problem!).

Reference the attached pdf.  It indicates that button to press is not the rotary button but the top left button.  Good luck and let us know what fault code you find.

Hello Arthur,
I have had to replace the bow thruster prop underwater. I found that the easiest way align the nylon screws to the hub, was to use 3 stainless screws about 1/4-1/2” longer than the nylon ones. Then I used stainless screws (same size as nylon) to draw prop onto hub. Once the prop is secure to hub, I replace the stainless screws with the nylon. It was easy. Easier than taping prop onto hub with mallet and trying to align the nylon screws.
Ps. We will be in shelter bay March 17. I have spare hubs/pins/screws if you need
