Re: Sharki bow thruster leaking

n33077@...

I finally received a reply from Amel:

Dear Mr. Grinius,

As for your bowthruster we cannot build a new lower unit as the parts do not exist anymore.

It is very difficult to take the bowthruster apart to get access to the gears  located inside the unit.

The only way to get access to them is to slightly sand around to remove the GPR. Then you will find 2 flanges bolted together (white). Inside you will see the gearset (we have sent you the drawing in a previous email).

To fix the crack, you can sand all around the lower unit (few mm thick) and then redo the laminated strips.

With our kindest regards,

Maxime PELLERIN/Chantiers AMEL Customer service

It looks like the white plastic (?) ring is a split ring to house the seal.  While I finally got the the seal to hold oil with no leaks, this component (bow thruster) will careful attention to keep it running.  I also Amel if a Maramu's bow thruster would fit in the compartment.

We are considering a sailing/rowing dinghy.  Anybody have one...what brand/model and where is your prefered location for storage.

I was wanting to find a nesting dinghy but haven't found yet.

Hi Bob,
You're in some rarified air with your 55.  I haven't seen a question about your boat yet on this forum.

If it is built like the prior Amels, you will get a lot of info in the files section of the group.  I don't know if Amel has changed the design significantly for the 55, but the drive has been very similar in the Santorin, Maramu, and SuperMaramu.  I'll be interested to hear of any changes they've made in the 55.
Good Luck,

Hi Bob,

I saw Renaissance at Sandy Yacht Club a couple of weeks ago when down sailing on a Wednesday before heading to our boat for a Med cruise.

A couple of mates said they have you a hand to tie up.

That's the first Amel seen in those parts for a long time.

Bob,

If you look in the "Files" section there is an excellent description of the procedure written by Gary Silver and further edited by Bill Rouse, and there are many additional postings (use the Search feature) relating to the replacement of the prop shaft wear-out bearing and its seals.  You will even see a few naive questions from me on the topic.  ;-)

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] desalanator D50

Mark Erdos

Sorry for the late response on this topic. The pressure meter sensor is adjustable with a screw in the back. Pull off the wiring plug on the sensor and you will see the screw. This will help you if your unit shuts down at the correct pressure. If the unit does not adjust, you may need a new sensor. They are available from authorized Dessalator dealers.

With best regards,

Mark

I asked Amel on amel.med@amel.fr and got the following price from them

The complete set of engine/transmission mounts costs 1050 Euros ex-vat and ex-works.

Concerning the furler, most of the time only the gearbox has to be replaced, its price is 722,68 Euros ex-vat and ex-works.

Problems filling oil to older version Amel C drive

smallworldsailor@...

Hello out there! We recently purchased an early Super Maramu (1990) which has the Aluminum C drive. As part of servicing things, we drained the C drive oil from the bolt under the unit on the side of the keel fairing and then attempted to refill the gearbox. We have had great difficulty getting more than 1.1 gallons into the box! Seems like an airlock and we tried sucking air out of the unit via the vent line, and it helps a little but then it stops filling again.

Is there a secret way to fill this unit?' I wrote to Amel Martinique an they said it might take two days to fill but it has been four and no more oil is going in.

Has anybody had any experience with an issue like this?

Help! We have to move the boat in two days 200 miles. We need to get this resolved!

Re: VHF Intermittent

Derick Gates

Hi Duane and Peg,

I have the Raymarine 230E VHF, and found that the gradual UV-induced deterioration of the cockpit microphone cord over the years necessitated its replacement.  I also discovered that the MMSI number change I needed to do as a new owner could only be done by Raymarine in Manchester New Hampshire.

Because I live in northern Massachusetts, I disconnected the main unit (after labelling all the attachment wires with color-coded tape!) and brought it back with me and got it serviced in New Hampshire.  While the technician at RayMarine was reprogramming the MMSI number, I also paid for a check of all systems and he found something to repair on one of the output circuits - one of the three outputs was apparently not functioning.  He also reprogrammed the unit (which is of European purchase, hence the 'E' in 230E) to be able to access both US and European channels.

I purchased from the Raymarine people 2 replacement microphone cords, (one for cockpit use, one for Nav station use) which I ended up installing myself - not too complex a job.  The VHF works as expected again.

If it is not the microphone cord itself, you may want to try shifting the microphone chord to an alternate outlet.

Hope this helps,

Derick Gates

Hey Everyone -

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a place to get a new main sail electric furling motor? I have tried Riza, Maud and Mr Potter and have had no luck. Looking to get it shipped to the Boston area ASAP to meet the boat in Bermuda in the coming couple weeks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

VHF Intermittent

Duane Siegfri

We just purchased SM #477 and are experiencing intermittent transmitting failure on our Raymarine 240E VHF.

I've tried turning off everything except the VHF in case there was some conflict with the AIS (although the "Status OK" light on the AIS does not go off  with the chartplotters).

If anyone has some advice it would be much appreciated.

The wire ties you found in the water heater come from the fact that, in the old days, Amel used to install magnesium anodes inside the water heater. These anodes were tied to the heating element connected to the engine cooling mix.
