Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bottom Paint

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Eric,

Sorry to hear about the flaking.

I had a flaking issue with Micron66 when I hauled the boat after two years to apply new antifouling  The paint flaked as it dried. It was determined that the painter had added thinner to the paint, in effect, stealing about 40% of the Micron66.

I had the hull scraped to the gellcoat, then sanded to get the last of it off. I was told that media blasting may take off too much in some areas.  I used International Gelseal200 barrier coat, but later learned that Amel does not use a barrier coat on the outside of the gellcoat. Amel uses a proprietary antiosmos barrier under the gellcoat. The yard is recommending a barrier coat because most other non-Amel boats will need this. Your Amel does not. The yard probably is not aware of this feature.

One other comment, I think that International recommends a primer coat between non Micron paints. You should check the Micron66 spec sheet.

The bottom looks so bad that I was thinking of having the bottom media blasted down to Gel coat.

I recall someone mentioning that Amel put something in the gel coat to prevent blisters. The yard I am in recommended a b arrier coat before bottom paint is applied. Has anyone had their boats bottom cleaned down to gel coat, and what did you do after it was clean?

Re: Diesel tank removal

Andy Croney

Thanks for your feedback,

We will go for a replica of the old tank in 316 Stainless Steel, with the addition of inspection openings - we are very lucky to still have skilled craftsman here able to fabricate and weld to a high quality , which , I believe , will not be the case in the near future when these guys start to retire.

As we are in the tropics , the hull does heat up in the summers when the sun is at the right angle . We wanted to take the opportunity to install 1 " (25mm) pumpf foam with a Marintex finish between the ribs , adhered to the hull.

This should insulate this space behind the tank , naturally still ensuring there is a gap for airflow between the tank and the insulation.

Any negatives ? Would condensation within the insulation be a potential issue as we are moving the dew point. Winter water temperatures get down to about 16 Deg Centigrade ( 60 Deg. Fahrenheit)

Any thoughts , much appreciated.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Stay sail

Alan Leslie

I think that there are a number of reasons to have an inner forestay / staysail setup.
The primary one is to be able to keep the boat in better balance when reefed.
In high winds, going to windward you reef the mizzen, main and genoa, but when you wind the genoa in you are moving the centre of effort of the sail plan towards the bow, which means a lot more force is required on the helm to maintain course.
If you reef the main into the mast and have a staysail, you are keeping the centre of effort closer to the centre of the boat and thus it will be better balanced.
Reefing the genoa when going to windward results in a horrible sail shape that is not very efficient. In high winds it also puts tremendous loads on the leech of the sail, which will in time pull it out of shape, or worse, tear it. A smaller staysail unreefed will be a much more efficient sail.
We sailed from New Zealand to the Austral Islands last year, hard on the wind for a week with reefed main and mizzen; we used the staysail constantly in winds of over 40 knots - I am very glad we had it.
If you do install an inner forestay, it needs toi be well secured at the base so that the load is not taken only by the deck, and if the head of the stay is substantially lower than the top of the mast, running backstays are essential to prevent the mast from collapsing.
There was a lot of discussion on this forum on this topic about 2 years ago...lots of pics as well.
Good luck

Ric Gottschalk <ric@...>

I have sailed a number of boats with a staysail. A Frers 60 ketch, Tayana 52 ketch, my own Alajuela 48 and the Cape Dory 30 cutter with a boomed foot (ankle breaker). Loved them all in a blow .It really balanced the boat while reducing sail. Found running backstays a pain, especially the Frers 60. The best was a Cape Dory 30-33-36 where we never touched the running backstays. On the Cape Dory 30, Ialso found that sheeting the staysl hard to midship, it would help fill the yankee or genoa in light winds going downwind. Really cool. Lots of options. Others may find their experience different. Often the slot for the genoa is too narrow to tack easily. If it works on the Amel, great.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Stay sail

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good afternoon Paul,

When I purchased my vessel (SM2K #289), the (very knowledgeable) previous owner had installed a stay sail after many years of ownership reason: to sail closer to the wind.
At first I did not like it, as it is not possible to tack the genoa without furling it… And 99% of the time I use the genoa. So a real inconvenience.

As Bill said: you will sail closer to the wind, but in order to have a proper rigging you will also need to use a track (meaning: making holes on the deck which in my eyes will decrease the value of your vessel).
I found that running the genoa sheet inside the shroud and only using a portion of the genoa (to make it a jib) will provide almost similar performance to the stay sail.

But Derrick said, should something happened to the genoa (or the bow pulpit in my case) you do have a back up.
About a year ago, a power boat lost controlled in Nassau and destroyed my bow pulpit… in short I wasn’t sure I still should use the genoa, so I then use the stay sail (convenient)
When the now pulpit was removed for repair (took 3 weeks in Fort Lauderdale…) I was still able to sail with the stay sail and was thankful for it. But again, this is in a very particular case.
Still I use the genoa 99% of the time with the inconvenience of having to furl it in to tack.

If I was installing from scratch: instead to be parallel to the fore stay like I have, I would prefer to head to be much closer to the top of the mast, so I wouldn’t have to use running back stay.
The way the foot is installed is wrong on mine (look at pictures. http://nikimat.com/staysail.html
Therefore your stay sail should not attached to the “floor” or deck, but to the bottom on the boat, like mine is (look at pictures).

Best of all would prefer a system that would allow to “unhook” the stay sail while not using it, attach it near the mast, so that you can tack the genoa without furling it.

Not sure how long you own Kerpa for, but before adding this stay sail, use her as it was designed then judge for yourself.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Re: Stay sail

Derick Gates SM2K #400 Brava

Paul,

I can add one more reason for installing a staysail (trinquette in French) to Bill's answer.  Peace of mind.  Should your genoa fail for any reason (furler failure, sail problem, etc) you still have a foresail you can use to go to windward/balance the mainsail. Should your forestay ever let go, you might not lose the mast - but that is speculation on my part.  Nevertheless, make the installation strong!

Although I am a gentleman and prefer not to go upwind, there are many times that it is unavoidable to do so and if I can, I try not to use the engine.  To me, tacking to windward is one of the joys of sailing, and sailing to windward is much more fun than pounding directly into the wind and waves with the iron jenny.

I cannot tell you how big the improvement is in heading capability - I have not made a study of it - but I might hazard a guess that it gives you another 6 to 8 degrees of pointing ability on a Super Maramu.

I do not know the size of Brava's staysail - it was installed by the previous owner - but with the tack placed just in front of the anchor winch and the head going only up to the spreaders it is smaller than some other installations. Despite the extra foredeck room that this placement provides in front of the staysail, during tacking with the genoa I still find it necessary to partially roller-reef the genoa so that it does not get caught on the staysail foil.

Re: Onan MDKAL - Generator Bearing Replacement

amelliahona <no_reply@...>

Hi Duane:

I am familiar with that recommendation to replace the bearing every 5 years and as my Onan is not 14 years old I have wanted to accomplish this for some years now.  I even purchased the replacement bearing part.  I have had two different supposed official Onan service agents look at mine and I requested that they change it.  Both declined to do so, having removed the end cover of the generator and viewing the bearing, saying something to the effect that, "everything looked fine".  I suppose they had x-ray vision to determine that.  I am guessing that neither one of these gentlemen had been trained on the procedure.  I have not dared tackle this job on my own as it looks like you would need to support the heavy generator windings while removing the bearing (presumably using standard removal techniques involving slide hammer etc) and then pressing the replacement bearing into place.  It would be really nice to do this bit of service but we really need some additional info from Onan before we attempt it ourselves as their own service technicians seem reluctant to do this service.

All the best,

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Elja,

The autopilot computer cancelled sending commands to the drive unit.

The error you are getting could be a result of many things.

I will list some that I know of:

The rudder is too difficult for the drive unit to move. This could be a mechanical issue like a rope jammed in the rudder or bad steering cables. With the autopilot on Standby, can you turn the rudder easily? If so, go to the next paragraph.

If your boat is a 24 volt boat, you have a 24 volt drive with a 12 volt clutch because ALL Raymarine clutces are 12 volts. Check on the course computer to see that either a 24 volt to 12 volt switch is in the 12 volt position, or the fuse that plugs into 12 or 24 is plugged into 12. There are also some voltage tests that you can perform at the drive unit...we will discuss those later...

Next check the Raymarine rudder reference device to see if maybe it has come loose. I am aware of one of these coming loose and causing your problem  The rudder reference is mounted near and connected to the quadrant where you connect the emergency tiller.

Next observe the quadrant and rudder reference while someone turns the wheel all the way to port then all the way to starboard. Do this five or six times...is everything smooth mechanically?

If you have not discovered the problem at this point, you probably have a defective drive unit, or the clutch inside the drive unit. There is a remote chance that you have a bad rudder reference.

You probably want to call a Raymarine service technician. Keep in mind that all of the Raymarine drives can be rebuilt, new clutches installed and even the rudder reference can be refurbished. Earlier I posted the email address of a guy in Colorado in the US who rebuilds all if these things. A few of us have used him on International shipments.

If you have a basic understanding of DC voltage and how these drive units work, you may want to take your volt meter to the wires on the drive. There will be 4. 2 for the clutch which is energized when you press auto...and 2 for the motor...the motor wires change polarity to reverse the motor. With this basic info you should be able to verify that the course computer is sending the correct commands.

Let me know what you find.

Hi,
after not using the mainsailreefing for 5 month, the mechanical gearbox - top of the motor - was blocked by rusty and destroyed ballbearing at  the bottom of the mechanical gearbox. After cleaning , greasing the system  worked without the ballbearing. Now I am  waiting for response by Amel. It seems that they do not have the parts in stock. Has anyone  the contactinformation  of the manufacturer of the gearbox or mast ?

SVPeregrinus,

Can you tell me the proper diode for the Yanmar 100 hp stop button circuit, and perhaps a source for it?  My stop button has ceased working.  Based on this thread, I have purchased a spare stop solenoid already in case that is the problem, but am not on the boat to look for the type of replacement diode.  Is it the same as the Volvo diode mentioned in this thread?  If so, I am having a hard time finding a source.  The website in the Netherlands that I directed Veit to in the thread above does not ship outside of Europe.

Also, Bill Rouse published some nice pictures of the Yanmar 100 hp starter relay and starter solenoid.  Has anyone got a picture of the location of the stop solenoid and diode harness for the Yanmar 100 hp?  Also, I remember hearing that someone's stop button ceased working because of a lose connection and would love to know exactly where that lose connection was.

If the process is the same as the SM, here are

pictures I took when I did mine, following information

written by Gary Silver and notes added by Bill Rouse.

Hope that helps.

Peter, the parts don't all look exactly

the same, but the process is the same as for the Super

Maramu.  The procedures documented on this Yahoo Group

apply to the Mango bow thruster as well.  Make sure
you

don't break or loose anything, as Amel won't be

any

help with parts for the Mango version.  The seals are

standard seals that can be purchased locally.
 I've

had

a hard time matching the o-rings and have been using
the

same ones for a while.  The nylon screws can be

purchased

locally.  The foam rings are a bit more difficult.
 If

you

can get the SM ones they will work.  Don't tell

Amel

you're looking for parts for a Mango, they seemed
to

have purged the spares, or just run out.  Last year I

had

to fabricate a new fairing, which was challenging but

doable.  Good Luck.

Peter,

Are you aware that there is an Amel designed tool for pulling a stuck tube out of the motor that is photographed and in the photo section of the Amel Owners Group?

Hi Alexandre,
Thankyou for the advice. The images you attached I can not open so if you could send them again that would be great.
I am just in the process of making a tool for pressing the motor off the thruster.
I will take photos and post them when completed.
Kind regards
Peter

If the process is the same as the SM, here are pictures I took when I did mine, following information written by Gary Silver and notes added by Bill Rouse.
Hope that helps.

Peter, the parts don't all look exactly
the same, but the process is the same as for the Super
Maramu.  The procedures documented on this Yahoo Group
apply to the Mango bow thruster as well.  Make sure you
don't break or loose anything, as Amel won't be any
help with parts for the Mango version.  The seals are
standard seals that can be purchased locally.  I've had
a hard time matching the o-rings and have been using the
same ones for a while.  The nylon screws can be purchased
locally.  The foam rings are a bit more difficult.  If you
can get the SM ones they will work.  Don't tell Amel
you're looking for parts for a Mango, they seemed to
have purged the spares, or just run out.  Last year I had
to fabricate a new fairing, which was challenging but
doable.  Good Luck.

Re: Diesel tank removal

Andy Croney

Thanks for all the feedback guys,

we will opt for the remodelling of the old stainless steel tank which has lasted 30 years - exact same dimensions, baffles etc  however we will introduce some inspection hatches at the top of the tank.

We will opt for the more expensive 316 SS.

Fortunately where we are we can still get excellent workmanship for a fair price, when all the 'old" guys retire here in 5- 10 years it will be another story.

Thanks again for the support

Last year I had
to fabricate a new fairing, which was challenging but
doable.  Good Luck.
