Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Pipe for pushing seals into C-drive

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Alan,

Schedule 40 is mostly an American term. It means thicker-walled PVC...or technically it means: "Based on the NPS (North American set of standard sizes for pipes) and schedule (North American dimensional number for wall thickness) of a pipe, the pipe outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness can be obtained from reference tables which are based on ASME standards B36.10M and B36.19M. For example, NPS 14 Sch 40 has an OD of 14 inches and a wall thickness of 0.437 inches."

I bet that is more than you wanted to know.

Alan,

2” Schedule 40 PVC is perfect for this job. The I.D. is a couple of mm larger than the shaft and the O.C. is a couple of mm smaller than the housing. The piece we use is about 10” long.

Peter,

I have not experienced this, but others have and it is normally not the gear box, but usually grease inside the furller foil and on the forestay getting hot and running out.

What Model Amel and Hull Number? Where are you located? How long have you owned her?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Little or no water pressure in shower mixers

Ben it is probably long after you have solved this problem, but I have recently experienced exactly the same symptoms in with the aft shower. After checking for obstructions, the result was the same so I swapped the mixer taps over from front to aft and the aft shower worked perfectly again. I suspect that a deposit build up in the mixer tap is the cause of the trouble. When I get the chance I will immerse the bad mixer tap in vinegar heated to 60C and then leave it overnight to soak. I cannot do that now as I am en-route to Turkey.

What is different in your case is that you say the symptoms are the same in both showers. Only my aft shower has given a problem.

Ben,

My guess is that it is a combination of the accumulator tanks (one on the water pump available from Amel and one behind the water heater) that need replacing and an adjustment of the pressure switch. With a tire pressure gauge check the pressure on the tanks at the air pressure nipple (like a bicycle tire). Do this when you have turned off the water pump and bled the water pressure. The accumulator tank pressure should be about 10% less than normalhigh pressure (Cut-off pressure). If you have no pressure, replace that tank. If you have low pressure, pump it up with a bicycle pump. It could also be a slight clog where the hot water exits the water heater.

It could be that the pump is ready for a rebuild. What pump do you have? That SM came standard with a Manufacturer: AMFA (Reya) Model: Tornio(#66B)water pump. Amel has repair kits in stock. The kits include everything you need.

One issue I have is intermittent low (mostly low to no) water pressure in the shower mixers. Sink in both heads is fine and galley is good, but only showers. I pulled off hose and ran straight from mixing tube but no change. It starts out strong and then falls to nothing. if I turn off and wait 30-60 seconds, it stronger but pressure drops again. Considering galley and sinks are fine, I've not sure what it could be. Is shower system on completely separate path with its own filter? I'm thinking maybe a general low water pressure issue with pump (original from 2002).. Gauge pressure is 24 pounds when no water is being used). This does seem low. I've had been told there may be a pressure regulator switch that's bad, Not sure.

If anyone has had sim ilar experience or can offer some clues, I would be grateful.

Alan,

I use the removed wear bushing reversed on the shaft to push the seals in. I drive the bushing in with a piece of pipe that slides over the end of the bushing that normally is inserted into the seals. My piece of pipe has an inside dimension of 52mm and a length of 23cm. It was a piece of scrap I found in the yard...it works, but it could be smaller.

One solution is to use the old bushing to gently push each seal into a position so the second and the the third seal is inside shaft. Then push the bushing gently into position and use the old bushing and a rubber hammer to put the set in to final position.

I suppose this was the supplier to Amel, and since Amel does not sell these covers to SM owners, I assume that Amel would have no objection of owners contacting the OEM supplier. My opinion of the quality of materials and workmanship regarding the original cusion foam and covers is very good.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow thruster lip seals

Mike Ondra

So with all this discussion about lip seals for the bow thruster propeller shaft, how does this relate to the c-drive prop shaft lip seal discussion? For example which way should the single bow thruster seal face…keeping oil in or water out? If RTV is a good idea for the bow thruster, is it similarly a good idea for the c-drive? Shopping for RTV is interesting given the range of products. Locktite and Permatex seem to be the most available manufacturers. Both have a range of RTVs. Perhaps important to get one that tolerates oil. I wound up with Permatex Ultra Blue from an auto parts store which is said to be oil safe.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow thruster lip seals

Mark,
Looking forward to seeing CREAMPUFF out of the water. Deborah and I will be in Maryland 9/7-11. What day would be convenient to meet up? What yard are you in?

Warmest regards,

Thanks! Very timely on this. We hauled Cream Puff today and will be doing the prop, Amel drive and bow thruster this week.

Mark,

Yes,

I think using RTV on the propeller shaft seal improved the water tightness. Blue or Clear works.

I guess that I should update the instructions in the files section.

Bill,

I am a little confused (very normal for me). Are you saying to use blue RTV on the lower oil seal behind the prop? I was aware that RTV should be used on the upper 80mm lip seal inside the locker, but not the lower lip seal.

With best regards,

Mark

Alan,

Amel sent the following seal for the bow thruster shaft:
Paulstra
792521
IEL 30. 42. 7.
MI 1 VY

When installing it, use some RTV on the outside edge of the seal and make
sure that it is pressed all the way in. The space for the seal is about 9mm
deep and the seal is 7mm thick.
