Hi Steve and Liz,

One of my friends who re-powered a Maramu found that Beta Marine was far more helpful than Yanmar when it came to meeting his requirements. So you may want to check with them to see if their Kubota based engine  is a better solution than Yanmar. Kubota parts are quite easy to find as they are widely used in agricultural and industrial applications.

While I am generally quite positive about Yanmar, I don't know if I would buy one of the ones they sell now. Should some electronics fail, you could be stranded quite some time waiting for replacements. The Yanmar we had in Exit Strategy (Maramu #29) was installed about 10 years ago and that generation did not rely so much on electronics. Even my mechanic, who knows a great deal about Yanmar, isn't too keen on their latest.

I'm no expert on the Beta, but I don't think their engines are so reliant on electronics.

Hey Richard,

We are about to order the new Yanmar for Aloha, and are finding Yanmar USA not helpful regarding the isolation issues. For example, they will not provide isolated ground alternators without a 4 month lead time. The alternators are not a problem, as I can provide my own, but they also seem unable to provide isolated sensors and such. I guess my question is where does one get all the required components to isolate the engine, if the engine manufacturer can't provide them?

On another note, a very nice dual alternator pulley and bracket kit can be provided by Electromax in Ontario, Canada for $560.00. The kit will fit the 80hp Yanmar which we are buying, or the 110hp which shares the same block. I previously purchase an alternator and watermaker from Electromax, and have found them to be great people to work with.

Regarding Kent's CDrive issues, I have to wonder how much of the problem was a result of the lack of isolation of the engine since that has been corrected, and he seems to still have issues with the prop zinc disappearing. Some of the problems seem incredibly difficult to track down.

Congratulations on a successful delivery across the pond, and welcome back.

Steve and Liz Davis

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: ONAN FAULT BRAKER

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Bob, good question.

I am not sure, but I know that if you disconnect the battery, it will shut down, and if the manual states if battery voltage is above 19.2VDV, it will shut down (code 29), so I suspect that there is battery voltage monitoring with shutdowns at the high of 19.2 and a low of X.

If I am right, you could disconnect the belt on your Onan and it will run fine until the battery gets too low or the engine overheats. That belt also turns the coolant water pump and without the belt, it will overheat! In the coming months I plan to change that belt and test this for a minute. If anyone is changing a belt before I get to it, please test this for us.

On an entirely different matter, Bob, have you purchased a wet/vac?

When leaving the port a couple of days ago it became apparent that the bow thruster had stopped working - the solenoids are activating on moving the joystick from port and starboard and I verified that there was the correct voltages going to the motor according to the circuit diagram - I have therefore concluded that the bow thruster motor has malfunctioned so have removed it and fixed the shaft up with wires and a pulley. Before I did this I dived and checked the bow thruster propellor was not snagged and that I could turn the blades freely.
I could not find anyone having attempted an overhaul of this motor on the forum - does anyone have any experience of this?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Holding Tanks

Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>

Hello Ian,

I have installed a single tank in the forward heads… behind the panel in the aft section.  Leaves the forward area for usual knick knacks.

Had to run pipes etc as my boat was not piped for “blackwater” and I doubt yours is either.  Unless OZ forces you to a full black water management, I would only install one.  (The fish seem to love the stuff… :-)

I changed the subject line from "Hi Oliver" to C Drive Oil Drain Plug so that it is searchable at a later date.

As previously stated, The oil drain plug bolt is 20mm and it has coarse threads, not fine threads. It is made of bronze...its threaded length is 25mm then it has a collar with an O ring...the collar is 30mm.

I posted a photo in the photo album titled C Drive

Hi Eric,

no I don't know but I will try to get the information asap.
In between, you may be able to get the information from someone who is aboard his (her) Super Maramu with a SPURS rope-cutter (???!!!).
When AMEL originally mounted a SPURS rope-cutter, as the fixed blade is inserted in a specific stainless steel oil drain plug/bolt, the original bronze oil drain plug was put aboard with the original batch of spare parts.
If the "SPURS SM" owners dig in their spare parts boxes, they may find this bolt...

Spurs sells what I think is an
overhaul kit which contains the two halves, new plastic
inserts, small bolts for the two halves, and possibly a
zinc. I cannot remember the price, but I thought it was
high.

Hi Olivier,

I have the V shaped bolt in my sail drive.. I was looking to find a matching piece of pipe to make a longer drain for the C-Drive. I do have the Spurs line cutter but I did not receive the drain plug when I took delivery.

Hi Eric,

no I don't know but I will try to get the information asap.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Onan MDKAL - Generator Bearing Replacement

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Duane,

Last March in Fort Lauderdale, I had an Onan mechanic doing the 5 years service: which (in addition to oil change, fuel filter, coolant, belt, etc.) also says to change the bearings and adjust the valve lash, plus I wanted everything checked.
The mechanic said my genset was very well take care off, no rust, looks like new (less than 2000 hours), checked the valve lash which was good, then check the bearing and said there was no need.
BUT, to change them, I would have had to remove the hot water tank to access the generator.
http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

The service manuals says a trained mechanic should do these. I wouldn’t attempt myself. I wouldn’t even use someone not trained for that.
I used a mechanic from Onan itself. Price was high, but the quality was excellent.
I had actually a quote from another company that worked on my Volvo, and their price was twice as high… probably because they didn’t know what they were doing (like they demonstrated working on my volvo).

Wish I could help more…

In the Onan Service Manual they recommend replacing
the Generator Bearing every 5 years.  Can anyone relate
their experience in this bit of work?  Hard, easy,
somewhere in between?  It doesn't seem like a big job
but, I've thought that about several tight spots I got
myself into!

I have the bolt Olivier is speaking of and I will measure it tomorrow, but Eric was also asking about the thread pitch. I will not be able to tell, but my guess is that it would be standard metric.
