Re: Cleaning Water Heater
Uh oh, started cleaning the thermostat assembly and realized that the zinc is completely gone. I was looking at the thermocouple. Seems like what looks like a simple project usually turns into a two day ordeal. Kent SM243 Kristy

Sorry, I left out the key word: Do you have any concerns about the condition of the top surface of your ballast? The surface which is up against the bottom of the keel stub?

Thanks Miles!
How did you avoid dropping the nut out of the socket when you removed it with the long extensions? Is that attachment point at the top something you added, or is it original? Jacob

Re: Cleaning Water Heater
Gerhard Mueller
If the zinc is OK you should do nothing more as inspection. The thin coating (film) works as a protection and will soon come back when you remove it. Only rinse the tank. That is sufficient.

Cleaning Water Heater
Hi all,
I just opened my water heater to check the zinc. It's been a few years since I've done this. I found the zinc mostly intact, but covered with a greenish film. The water is a little discolored brown. I'm writing to ask if anyone has a great way to clean the inside of the tank. Access is limited to a 3 1 /2" hole where the AC heating element, thermostat, and zinc are mounted. Access to the hole is limited by the scupper drain pipe. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to remove the heater and use a pressure sprayer, but hoped someone would have an easier solution. Thanks Kent Kristy SM 243 St Michaels, MD

Re: Two questions
Marinepartseurope has several starter switches listed, I just wouldn't know which one is for your setup. I did put in a new panel in Martinique (there's a Volvo store there) and I'll guess they could procure the switch as well.
As far as hatch foam is concerned, the replacement I used was actually trapezoidal a bit. I want to say 12mm on the glass side and 10mm where is contacts the ridge of the hatch. I too, found it in a roll at a chandlery, but it was about the 12th chandler I'd searched :) I recently acquired a freezer gasket on Amazon (searched for 'old style refrigerator gasket) and I'm not sure you couldn't order the foam there as well. We're on anchor at the moment so I don't have much signal and can't really research. I know there's a company that supplies Goiot hatch parts; they've probably got the gasket material but at a premium.price. (anyway, that's where I learned the measurements from:) ) Gary W SM 209, Adagio Cape Lookout, NC .. (hangin' on in 30kts).

Re: Converting my Amel 54 to lithium batteries: what I did, what I like and what I don't like (after one year of full time live aboard use)
Mark McGovern
Scott,
First off, thank you for sharing both the details of your LiFePO4 setup and your "real-world" experiences with the system. It's been extremely helpful to me in planning my electrical system upgrades on my SM Can you provide any more details on exactly how you ran the four new 50mm2 cables from the inverter to the battery switches? Thanks, Mark -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Hi Jacob I’ve just replaced rotten bonding cables with the attached There is lots of good discussions about this on the forum that I read up on before attempting it and that helped. It’s a shot taken lying on top of my engine looking down into the bilge Copper strap is 50mm by 4mm I can dig out length I bought too if helpful 20 or was it 22mm hole 2 inches from end that then attaches to keel bolt Long extensions on 30mm socket set Was quite easy. Only hard part was getting the shape about right Happy to help if you have qs I would also say that a solution with oversized copper braid cable would work well. Perhaps for not as long. All the best Miles Maramu 162

Arlo, We have Mango #62, (1986). We have a removeable inner forestay that seems to be original equipment. We use this with a hank-on sail for the second head sail when sailing downwind. It works well. Alan sv Charisma
