Regarding PropSpeed, I think it is a great product, but...the preparation and the two part application process is complicated and if the second part is not applied immediately after the first part, you have wasted your money. I think the only way to apply it correctly is an application done by two persons, the second person applying the second part as the first person finishes the first part. Additionally, if the first part is not applied heavy enough, you will have a problem. It needs to look very gold/yellow.

I believe that maybe 1 in 20 people that apply PropSpeed really know how to do it right. And I believe with the inflated price that PropSpeed is sold to individuals for DIY application, drives you to their dealers/distributors rather than DIY. Most of the PropSpeed distributors/dealers do not understand the installation process. Since we haul out BeBe in different places around the world, I ask the yard where we are hauling out what product they apply most of the time and go with that. Just like everyone, including PropSpeed users, I have mixed results.

I do not think this answers the question, but hopefully I shed some light on the subject.

I've had several mechanics tell me it's likely the transmission is ruined from the heat.  I take it you ran your for some time (maybe an hour) without oil?  

The problem was raised for us when Peg told me she could only get 1 knot at best.  It had progressively gotten slower.  We were in some building seas and Peg thought that was the reason.  I suspect that as it ran dry it probably took an hour.

So last night I posted the pictures of the Sharki bow thruster. New pictures are up in the photo's file under Sharki Bow thruster.  If you zoom in you can see the hairline cracks in the white housing. I wrote to SAV@ Amel to see if they have a replacement unit and / or parts for this bow thruster.  27 years of service ain't too bad,  however it might be time to replace it. 

As a temporary fix, I'm thinking of epoxying the housing, sanding it smooth again and re-installing the seal.  I'd also like to add a zirk fitting and just filling it with grease.  Any thoughts?

While servicing the autoprop, I noticed that the manufacturer calls for a zinc, located where the plastic end cap is.

Instructions provided by Amel (off the site I believe) show removal of the PLASTIC end cap, with no mention of a zinc.

The marina manager is familiar with autoprops, and says that a zinc is needed there. He's ordering one, so it must fit in. The zince shown looks just like the end cap.

We had Propspeed put on our prop in April 2014 prior to our cruising season of the Med May-Nov.  When the boat was hauled in Nov, the prop had absolutely no growth.

Hi Ross,

I have a 1982 Lofrans windless and periodically it functions inconsistently.  My solution has been to clean corrosion off the armature.  If the armature is dark I dress it with graphite paper until it is nice and shiney.  I can't address your concern about the loose brushes but you might try sleeving them with strips of aluminum cut from a soda can (I love a McGiver approach).

The electrode goes in the water. It
connects to the neg electrode on your multimeter. The pos
electrode on the multimeter is then placed on different
equipment which is exposed to sea water (engine, CDrive,
Generator, thru-hulls, etc) they should all read the same if

I use nothing on the prop.

I just have it dived every 3 weeks along with having the bottom cleaned.

Do not put the zinc on the prop.

As the zinc wears it becomes loose and causes vibrations on the shaft. I also ordered one from AB marine in Massachusetts and that is what I encountered. So unless you want to dive on the prop from time to time and tighten it. I would skip it.

As you recall my prop is fine after 13 years. I think you would be better off with a guppy over the side

The bowman is original equipment.

I would call the company in Massachusetts- I believe they are the distributors direct from Bowman.

I measured the heat exchanger (the best I could at least) and it seems to be spot on to the DC60 Bowman.  Did you know if it was the original equipment, or did you just search until you found it?  

 

I'm hopeful that I can find one in stock tomorrow.  Trans Atlantic Diesel claims to have all Bowman HEX in stock.

All this advice is spot on, as usual on this site. Same thing happened to us. Simply replace the cooler and make sure you put double clamps on the hoses and immediately after do at least 3 successive sets of gearbox oil replacements ensuring that you get all the oil out each time, to ensure no water/dampness in there which could cause future rust. With this job done you, you and Peggy can have peace of mind, at least for another 10 years, without the same problem re-surfacing. Think of that as a positive that it is now done where you can get replacements nearby.

Interestingly in our case we discovered this after a long motor sail, when coming into an anchorage, we engaged neutral gear when dropping anchor, and then when we tried to engage reverse to set the anchor there was no drive. We then tried forward gear, and the same thing occurred. This was because of the frothing/foam sponginess in the gearbox and it being therefore unable to push into either gear. It will engage once cooled down - ie the next day - which was lucky in our case as we have a 3 mile narrow and busy channel run to our berth which we did the next morning without daring to disengage from forward gear at all for fear of not having any drive to get home safely. I mention this just in case any others suddenly find no drive ..... immediately check the colour of your gearbox oil!

We're new Amel owners, and on our first outing the transmission (ZF Hurth Model ZF25-2.8) lost it's oil.  I'm a far cry from a mechanic but it appears there is a leak based on the small puddle of oil under the unit.  There is no oil in the reservoir for the dipstick and there is some white froth on the dipstick.  The oil is only on the deck and not much of that really, so it wasn't a high pressure side leak. If anyone has suffered through this would you please relate to me what your problem was so I could be better informed?  I plan on calling a repair facility on Monday, there are several Factory Authorized service centers here in West Palm Beach Florida.  


Peggy was heartbroken over this, though she seems in better spirits today.  I'm hopeful that she will trust the boat again.

Do not put the zinc on the prop.

As the zinc wears it becomes loose and causes vibrations on the shaft. I also ordered one from AB marine in Massachusetts and that is what I encountered. So unless you want to dive on the prop from time to time and tighten it. I would skip it.

As you recall my prop is fine after 13 years. I think you would be better off with a guppy over the side

While servicing the autoprop, I noticed that the manufacturer calls for a zinc, located where the plastic end cap is.

Instructions provided by Amel (off the site I believe) show removal of the PLASTIC end cap, with no mention of a zinc.

The marina manager is familiar with autoprops, and says that a zinc is needed there. He's ordering one, so it must fit in. The zince shown looks just like the end cap.

We use Micron 66 on the hull and "Propspeed" for the past 3 applications -  seems fine as I regularly dive on the prop and check it but interested to hear what others are doing too.

Eric,

I measured the heat exchanger (the best I could at least) and it seems to be spot on to the DC60 Bowman.  Did you know if it was the original equipment, or did you just search until you found it?  

I'm hopeful that I can find one in stock tomorrow.  Trans Atlantic Diesel claims to have all Bowman HEX in stock.

The electrode goes in the water. It
connects to the neg electrode on your multimeter. The pos
electrode on the multimeter is then placed on different
equipment which is exposed to sea water (engine, CDrive,
Generator, thru-hulls, etc) they should all read the same if
properly
