Re: Looks like Amel hit one out of the box.

Alan Leslie

Jamie,

I feel the same way about my Super Maramu 2000..

BUT...We visited La Rochelle in April last year and toured the factory, met the man that built our mast !, went for a sail with Antoine on the Amel 50, and I would have to say that the Amel spirit is still well alive.
We also saw the very first 60 sitting in the water tank.

The 50 is really Amel all over, however, they are obviously sensitive to the market as almost everything we have on our SM is optional on the 50...
Like, bowthruster, genset, watermaker...even cockpit cushions...
So if you look at the "list price" which is just under Eu 1 m, by the time you add all the stuff that we take for granted you're up to about Eu 1.5m
Similarly with the 60...it gets to about Eu 2.5m

BUT the boat is really good...construction, the same as always, water tight bulkheads as the SM, wonderful galley, very safe at sea, but the stbd sea berth of course has gone, but nice one up one down single berths just fwd of the saloon, maybe a good alternative.

AND with the inside shrouds, she points really well.....which is something our 53 DOESN'T...and I miss that from our previous boat.

If I had the money, which I don't, I'd order one in a minute,....

The 60, not so sure, in my opinion , it's just a bit TOO big, especially for someone like me that sails solo a lot of the time.

Anyway, that's probably a bit more that 2 cents worth, as you guys say.

Cheers

Alan

We cannot recommend the broker Michel Charpentier highly enough. When we bought Nunky he spent the best part of 2 days with us and then another whole day when the survey was done. A truly conscientious broker and a lovely guy too.

Bow chain plate of Sharki

Giorgio Ardrizzi

Hello everyone, I need some photos of the bow chain plate of the Sharki.  Being mine, the # 1 (1979) this part is different from the following ones and I replaced it in 1996 because it had broken.
After 24 years and many miles I have to replace it again because it is breaking.
The weak points are the two pins, bolted to the bow that secure the plate on the deck, which are subjected to great lateral efforts that cause strong stress to the material.
I would therefore like to do a definitive work to avoid repeating this problem.
Thank you very much in advance for your precious help.

Thank you all for your helpful responses and guidance!

Rascal is a fine boat indeed.  We're lucky to have her.

We'll have a closer look at the lifeboat rack mounting this weekend and then decide what to do next.

Re: Yanmar instrument panel

Mark,

Good find! I looked at all of their products...really a nice resource for many engine panels or for custom plexiglass panels.

Here is what they say:

"This is the first prototype of a Yanmar faceplate instrument panel GM series which is now up for sale to a boat owner wishing to work with us to make sure the faceplate panel fits perfectly.
1.6mm thick measuring 275mm x 135mm with adhesive tape for fixing.
If this prototype faceplate does not fit perfectly we will make another for you based on your recommendations.
This faceplate will be listed on eBay for $96.00 once prototyping is completed.
We replicate and manufacture dash and control panels for all types of machinery and equipment.
If you have a panel that needs replacing give us panel dimensions so we can replicate it for you at a discounted price so we can offer it for sale to others."

The following is my understanding: The pump controller (blue box in 54s) receives voltage input from each of the Danfoss compressor controllers. The "fan output" terminal on the Danfoss is the output terminal that connects to the pump controller. The Danfoss fan output is 12 volts, regardless of whether the refrigeration unit is 12 or 24 volts.

BTW, the blue box may no longer be available, unless old stock. Frigoboat replaced it with a relay for each refrigerator unit.

I hope this helps.

Scott, you have me really thinking about this thorn in my side. My boat is on the hard now, but I am going to check the voltage coming out of the pump controller. I do feel, though, that running a 24-volt pump at 12 volts is asking for the problems which I have experience multiple times. I will investigate and see what is going on - I am an electrical engineer but do not want to profess any sort of expertise at this time. My old boat used keel-cooled units and I never had any issues - no pump!!
I will find out in the spring here in the US.

Hello Martin,

Congratulations!  Are you purchasing "Barth," the 1986 Maramu, in Martinique? I told the broker on Monday that I would travel to see the boat next week, but she said a contract was nearly signed, so I am guessing you have beat me to it! Like you, our hope was to bring the boat north, to the NYC area in our case. Best of luck to you! -- We will wait our turn for the right Amel to become available!

You do not need to remove the rudder on the 54 to change the packing. You need to remove the top of the rudder post (the quadrant). Then remove the packing nut from the rudder post, remove the old packing, then insert new packing from Amel, and tighten the nut. In 90 days, you will likely need to tighten the nut again.

I have more detailed instructions, but considering your experience, the above will likely work for you.
