There were, I am almost certain, at least two different raw water pumps on the 110 Volvo fitted to the Amel 54. The 110 Volvo in our Amel 55 demonstration boat has a completely different raw water pump as well as a much different assemblage of the ancillary components. The block and head appear to be very similar but everything else is different.

Bozo,

Michael Last had a different kit #(21346756). Your number does correspond to the impeller kit, but I wondered if you had the actual engine type. I believe it to be a D3 110A for your kit. I wonder if Joel can answer whether the 54s had the same 110 series motor in all of them. There are A thru E on these 110s. I assume if you have hull #44 and I'm 14, and you have "A", mine should be and A also. I just want to be certain I'm getting the proper kit. I'll have to keep the engine serial number in my wallet in the future to make parts ordering from afar easier.

Mizzen roller furler gearbox in an AMEL Mango

Jose_Luis Isasi

Dear all. Merry Christmas!

For those of you that love solving riddles, quizzes and apparently impossible problems:

Juan, owner of Mango n 56 (Tortola V) has sent me a special request for translation. He is in Cartagena de Indias and he has an issue with the manual gearbox for the mizzen roller furler. It is jammed and he needs to dismount it in order to service it.

Looking at the photographs is easier to understand but basically in order to remove the gearbox, it is first unscrewed from the mast and from the furler spar. I have added a couple of pictures in the files section under folder TORTOLA V (AMEL MANGO) ( I copy the link here): https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/amelyachtowners/files/TORTOLA%20V%20%28AMEL%20MANGO%29/

The gearbox has 2 shafts, one for the handle, that crosses the mast, and another one that is introduced into the roller furler spar. The shafts form an L shape one with the other.

So he cannot move it down because the shaft for the handle is crossing the mast, and he cannot move it backwards because the shaft for the furler is inside the spar, pointing up and refraining from moving sideways.

He kindly asks advice from other user´s experience, of course he does not wish to remove the mast to do this. He wrote in French to AMEL  but he has not received an answer.

Could possibly some of you help him with ideas?

Thank you very much.

Hi Jeff and see if you have a Globe Marine products dealer nearby. They make ‘run dry’ impellors that are also resistant to most chemicals and oil, which instantly destroy most conventional impellors ( as does running them dry for more than a nanosecond ) . www.gcsmarine.com <http://www.gcsmarine.com> . I have used them successfully for years. You may already have one installed but I think I replaced the one in your boat with a spare out of the assortment Amel provided which was a Volvo part. See you soon. Joel

Hello Steve. Thanks for your message. I am located in Spain, and I am also slowly preparing the boat for a circunnavigation. I only need the control unit (I guess it is what you call "the computer"), since I already have two power arms (probably what you call "control head"). Actually this would be the spare unit. To be honest I don't have the slightest idea of how much to pay for your SPX30 since it isn't manufactured anymore and most boats are installing new models (as you are doing in your own boat) so there's not much of a second hand market. My sugestion is... tell how much would be a fair deal for you to sell and for me to buy, considering that there will be shipment expenses from USA to Europe to take care of.
Best. Victor
PD.- Sorry for my English. I wish it wasn't so rusty.

Sorry to post another newbie question,
but I just want to confirm that the prop and hub can be
replaced in situ; that the shaft extends far enough out of
the housing to push the hub on and feed the pin through
without having to drop the thruster out of the
boat.
And, for the record,
through the fates of multiple emails and phone calls, I
ended up with one extra spare prop and hub, in case anyone
is in need :)
Thanks in
advance!

Thanks in

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Bow Thruster Prop replacement.

Agree with Joel, I had two spare, but now just one! It was easy to replace. I tried from the dinghy which was awkward. So I put on my face mask, got in the water with a screwdriver and the job was done in 15 minutes.
Either be next to a pontoon or have a helper in a dinghy alongside to pass the screws, pin etc.

If I lose another one I will immediately get a spare replacement.  It's no go manoeuvring without it!

Incidentally mine was lost through my not noticing a carelessly thrown bow line back on board by a mariniero. It was dangling from the bow and got sucked in. No noise. Just no bow thruster! The fail safe nylon bolts shear quickly to protect the unit.

Sorry to post another newbie question, but I just want to confirm that the prop and hub can be replaced in situ; that the shaft extends far enough out of the housing to push the hub on and feed the pin through without having to drop the thruster out of the boat.

And, for the record, through the fates of multiple emails and phone calls, I ended up with one extra spare prop and hub, in case anyone is in need :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi Gary,
That's affirmative.  It's not hard to replace the prop while in the water using a snorkel.  If you drop the pin, it will sink to the bottom, if you drop the nylon bolts, they will float off with the current.  I'd recommend changing the nylon bolts each time you remove the prop, which I do every time I haul the boat.  I bought some at a local hardware once and had to trim a couple of threads off to keep them from bottoming out on the back side of the prop.  My prop is a tight fit, but can be removed and replaced with a little wiggle and pull effort.

One of my props has 8 bolts and the other has 6 bolts.  Make sure you have the proper hub for your spare prop.
