Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] zincs

Hi,

My zincs size (R5) usually last a year and still have about 30 % left at that time.

I also hang a guppy shape zinc over my starboard side. It is connected to the bonding of the fuel fill.

When I am in a marina and not on board I turn off the AC breaker at the pedestal and have someone turn it on only once weekly.

I replaced my zincs just prior to leaving the Chesapeake for the Caribbean .Less than a month later in the BVI my zincs appeared to be at least 1/3 gone , in Les Saintes at New Years they appeared 1/2 gone, very white and flakey I could easily scrape the zinc away with my fingers. We are now in Prickly Bay Grenada and I want to wait to get to Tobago Cays and clean water to have a look, but they have to be near the end of their life. In the fresh water of the Sassafras my zincs last forever, my question . How long should I expect zincs to last in salt water ? I have not other than two days been in a marina. We have been anchored the entire trip. Three months seems a short time for zincs to last, or is that about normal in salt water? Happy New Years in everyone!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] propeller shaft bushing

Hi Peter,
There are some good descriptions of propshaft maintenance in the Files section of this site.

There are 3 oil seals that keep water out and oil in.  There is a "bushing" that Amel calls the "wearing out bearing".  It is made of bronze? or brass? and fits inside the seals.  It has an o-ring between it and the prop shaft.  This part does wear out and should be changed with each bottom paint job when the oil seals are changed.   The Amel one is pretty expensive, so there has been some discussion about alternatives.  Some owners have replaced it with a locally made stainless steel bearing, or used a very thin stainless sleeve that doesn't wear out.

Search this site for discussions and look at the Files section, and you should have what you need to understand it.  Changing it isn't a difficult project.

Good luck,
Kent

Some weeks ago I bought a super maramu (1991). Its on land now to get renewals.

In the manual in the section maintenance/transmission it says that the prop shaft bushing should be replaced. The picture in the manual on page 29 shows a black ring (prop shaft bushing). On my SM there is nothing like that. Are there diffrent configurations or has this part disappeared?

Thanks in advance,
Peter

Kent, I am way over my head when it comes to the electrical side of this boat. I think the meter I was using was bad we were showing .33 v through our bodies. Just checked with another meter the bilge ground and show no reading with the gen set running. I found 2v between my solar panel arch and my hand rail. I have the arch grounded I am going to disconnect it from ground and see what that does. Its blowing steady 15 to 20 kts squalls every half hour if/when it calms down I will install new zincs. Thanks ,Pat

Hi, Pat,
I havent' done it yet, but apparently there's a way you can do this yourself.  With all the different electrical components it can be pretty complicated.  I've been doing some internet research and I'm more confused than ever about exactly how to go about it.  I know someone posted a message with a general description of what you're supposed to do, but now I can't find it.  Your DC systems are likely the cause, either the 24 or 12 V systems...one "expert" says it's the engine/alternators the vast majority of the time.  Some say AC can cause it if there's a bad connection that acts like a diode and converts your AC to DC.  Waaaay out of my comfort level!

I read Nigel Calder's book on boat maintenance early on and I know there's a description of the process there.

SeaBis makes a unit you can buy or rent that is designed just for this problem.

Here are a couple of blurbs about Electrolysis:

I've been putting this off til I get Kristy back in the water.  When I do, I'm going to hire an good electrician to help me find the problem.

I'm sure the experts on the site here will be able to help you more than I can.

Let us know what you do and wha t you find.  I'll do the same.

Richard, I set my meter on 20 vdc put neg. lead on transmission mount pos. lead on ground at the bilge and had a reading of 0.16 , shut the battery bank off , no electric flowing still have a reading, what does that tell me? Just held both the leads on the transmission support and got a 0.14 reading  and the battery bank is disconnected.?? Can hold one of them in each of my hands and get 0.08 reading ??? Just had a reading of 0.25 between my ss.riser and the frame with and without my gen set running and then even with the battery bank disconnected ??  Thanks, Pat

Hi Pat and Diane
You need to change them now. Buy quality zincs.
Once done start checking ground with a digital volt meter. If you get any reading AT All going hunting for a voltage leak. Start with   the connection to the bilge, then engine battery charge gen set. In the aft cabin at the rudder.  And the SSB
GOOD HUNTING.
