Re: Lubricant Oil for the "C" (not z) drive
Ultich and Pat - Here is what Olivier Beaute had to say on the subject 4 years ago.
Craig Beaute Olivier

Hi Bill,
the C-drive has been designed by AMEL in 1989. There has been 3 different designs for the Santorin and Super Maramu, only one for the 54. Until the last 54, AMEL has recommended to use 20W40 oil only because that's the kind of oil you usually have on board (for engine and generator) if you need to top up the C-drive tank. And that would avoid having two kinds of oil on board. In fact, this C-drive did not need this kind of oil (20W40) as it is made for high temperatures (that you find in a diesel engine). The C-drive oil rarely warms up more than 70°C.
Now, the manufacturer of the C-drive has changed and recommends the 80/90, and probably would deny warranty if this kind of oil is not used.
Again, in order to make things more simple, AMEL decided to use 80/90 gear oil for the new models, but also when they replace the oil in the older C-drives. I have seen Super Maramu's C-drives with SAE 80/90 oil replaced by the AMEL service team in La Rochelle (with the label mentioning the grade of oil and the engine hours attached to the C-drive tank).
So, if you (AMEL owners) replace oil in the C-drive, it's OK with 20W40 or 80/90. Don't mix both oils, but in case you do the of oil service of your C-drive, if you don't find one kind of oil, you may replace it with the other kind.
The 55 and 64 owners will just follow what they are told in their owner's manual (SAE 80/90).
Cheers.
Olivier.

Re: Replacement of carpets in SM
Linda Melton <lindajmelton@...>
We did exactly the same. One thing we learnt was to check the underside of the carpet. The one we bought shed a whole lot of the fabric binding material and we were forever sweeping and hoovering the bits. Also, non slip is important, in a seaway you can easily find the carpet moving under your feet ( and it also creeps in the passage way with normal traffic). We ended up only putting the carpet down while anchored or in a marina.

Re: sonic speed on SM 2000
Given the length of the sensors and the (guestimated) diameter of the hole I would say the sensors are self-aligning just because of the fit.

Bill, I thought that was only for the bow thruster , now for the C-Drive as well? I have still been using 20-40.

We did the same as Gary ,making a template and cutting the carpet, then had the binding done, I think I undercut the carpet about 3/16" to allow for binding. We were surprise how well it all fit,as good as original. Not a hard job ,maybe a few hours, spent more time selecting the carpet,we went with a berber ,as the pile was short . Its been in about seven years and still looks great.

We made a template.from large wrapping paper then bought a "remnant" piece from a big-box store. Cutting it with a box cutter was not too hard, just have to be careful. Once we had the pieces cut out we took them to a real "Carpeting and Flooring" store and asked them to "Bind" the edges which they did nicely in only a couple of days. We learned that the "Binding" process adds a small amount of extra material to the edges so our pieces were just a tiny bit too big but still fit ok. I think we will do it again this summer as the first attempt was mostly an experiment anyway. It was not very expensive overall. Best wishes! Gary W SM 209, Adagio Georgia, USA

The serial number is 184-00-076/F.
I have no way of knowing that the existing ones are identical, but I believe there was an earlier forum discussion on this confirming this serial number.

Hi Marco, I’m guessing the sensor is pushed in the hole bedded in Sikaflex. So I’m sure it will be a pig to remove once the time comes. I guess the best way is by drilling a hole in the face of the sensor and putting in a large screw to get some leverage to pull it out. Remember to tie a piece of string to the other end to feed in the new sensor once the old one is out. -- Cheers Paul Ya Fohi - Amel 54 #98

Re: Lubricant Oil for the z drive
Ulrich Michael Dangelmeyer
Hi, Paolo and Bill, that's very interesting: last year before my oil change in the Z-drive I asked AMEL SAV , Thierry, for the exact amount and specification. Next to the oil reservoir in the engine room at the bulkhead, there is a sign on my 54 with the strict indication of 20W- 4o oil. Thierry confirmed this as a directly recommended oil type. This specification is not very popular and one could also switch to 15W-40. The total quantity is 8 litres. So I ordered the 20W-40 oil (semi-synthetic and especially for marine use) from a German oil company in the web and did the oil change with it. Bill, obviously you have some other service information, or does it only concern the SM Z-Drives? That would be important for me to know too. Thanks for clarification. Best regards and stay healthy. Hi Danny,
The actual insurer who covers 100% of this risks is ERGO Versicherung AG AG ERGO Platz 1 40198 Düsseldorf Germany
This is what I sent to Penny & Barry this morning:
As promised this is the contact info for the insurance agent I had for the last 3 years for AMELIT. He was able to get me an increased “agreed” value for the hull, machinery and equipment; he operates out of THAILAND; they are also in FRENCH POLYNESIA but the company main office is in NEW CALEDONIA.
Christophe GEORGE Poe-ma Underwriting & Management Asia Ltd (PUMA) - Poe-ma insurances Group
And these are the other agents but they all came with the same insurance company in Germany; except lower agreed values (but at a lower premium).

Re: Washing Machine and 50 htz
Hi Penny & Barry,
I didn’t try PANTAENIUS after in 2017 their USA office offered me USD17K or so which I was ready to accept. Then PANTAENIUS USA sent me to PANTAENIUS UK bcoz the boat is owned by a LONDON company and Dutch registered meaning an additional USD2 or 3K in VAT – so now close to USD20K. Bill ROUSE sent me to another Insurance company and they offered USD8K (but the boat had to be during cyclone season in NEW ZEALAND) and again, happy to save USD10K, I was ready to accept when my friends in NEW CALEDONIA introduced me to my current agent who insured AMELIT for USD5K with LLOYDS in LONDON and no cyclone clause at all.
Apparently these premium disparities still exists as last year I met in the SP some other AMEL owners paying these sky-high USD15K plus premiums. I can eat a lot of sushi for the difference in premium 😊. I am sure PANTAENIUS is still willing to write policies at these premiums while making their conditions IMPOSSIBLE to comply with so they can get out of a claim if they want to.
The writing on the wall is that in 2017/2018, while the premiums & conditions were all over the board for the same boat, these proposal were readily available from several insurance companies; now that seems to be no longer the case.

Thank's Teun,
My Aussie friends in St Martin are very grateful for your research and the good result you got. Have read a just posted good article on Noonsite about getting insurance, seems to be a hot topic now that so many boats are stuck in areas they don't want to be in. I am lucky that my wife is British and our boat is still UK registered, our insurance with Pantaenius UK is excellent though a bit pricey. I am sure your research will benefit many Amel owners.
