Re: Furuno GPS Navigator GP-90
Oliver, if the GP90 is the same as the GP80 (I believe it is) the battery is soldered in place. Yes, I know! And I was only able to find one through a Furuno dealer about 3 years ago. This may have changed. I have forgotten exactly where the battery is located, but it is obvious when you open the GPS. I do not remember if there were any markings on the battery. Hopefully, someone else can add to this.

Wow, Scott, quite the setup. Certainty an interesting solution to use the pole to prevent the swinging if there is significant swell. The much simpler alternative is the ATN Tacker over the furled up Genoa. https://www.atninc.com/atn-tacker-sailing-equipment.shtml. You can use that alternative for a few miles, yours for hundreds of miles. I think the Tacker makes the sail even more stable than your Solution since it fixes the tack of the sail at the forestay. Re: Insurance Companies
Update & final outcome on my insurance hassle:
Agent 6 came back and informed he could NOT help because my boat was not SPAIN based.
In total 2 of the 7 Forum recommended agents came back with exactly the same GERMAN insurer policy, premium etc. as my South Pacific agent had proposed earlier. This GERMAN carrier included a mandatory Dutch 21% Insurance tax while the boat is not in Dutch/EU waters. Prime example of Dutch greediness/extortion.
This (only) insurer was also not willing to give a “hard storage only” cover while I was willing to prepay for a regular 1 year sailing cover to be activated once she goes back in the water.
One of the 2 Forum agents was willing to give 5% discount out of his commission which I rejected as I am not nickel & diming over somebody’s livelihood and my current agent has always done a great & professional job.
So this issue is behind me for ONE YEAR but I am sure this will not get any better.

Hi Mark,
Really appreciate your and the other members help on this.
Yes Sir – all of these are part of the 6 or 7 I approached.
Y-Yacht Niki: reason 1 and 5 on my list The Marina Shop – still waiting but informed me I needed new rigging Gowrie – the RI agent reason #7 and the FL agent reason #3 and #4 but she is now working on this again.
Top Sail is the ONLY one coming back with a proposal which I am currently discussing as I would like to have additional hard storage coverage as long as I am not back to the boat (might be for another 4 to 6 months). BTW a very, very fair proposal and only requiring a rigging survey which is fine with me.

Bill,
I think that insurance is a very big issue. I have now approached 6 to 7 agents/companies mentioned on our AYOG Forum and get very conflicting reasons of not willing to write insurance, like:
In talking to agents recommended via our AYOG forum I realize few of them remember/recognize the AMEL specific 6 or 7 watertight compartments so they tell me I need additional pumps on board; our overbuild rigging etc. etc.; and tell me I need to renew my rigging (just surveyed in December 2019 in COOMERA) because it is now 10 years old.
In all honesty: agency on #3 and #4 is now looking at this again after I wrote back I was a USA resident and had a USA address she replied she was going to look into this.
I know I am not the only AMEL owner having this problem – another member mentioned on the forum maybe looking at organizing our own group insurance (maybe via LLOYDS ?? they are used to write unusual policies)

Hello, I found the user manual here: https://www.furunousa.com/-/media/sites/furuno/document_library/documents/manuals/operation_manuals/gp90_operators_manual.pdf On page 9-2 it has this about the battery: It looks like it is not meant to be user replaceable however it may be possible. Re: Top loading galley fridge/freezer used as a fridge: No?
Oliver Henrichsen, SV Vela Nautica
Hello, You will find the video on our YouTube channel, look for SV Vela Nautica. The water in the old isolation you saw around the pvc pipe was, what was left after 9 month of drying. So the water that once entered the old isolation more or less stays in there. After remouving the old isolation: 1. I build an outer layer with floorjet, kind of bitumen/aluminium sandwith foil compleatly humidity proof. This protects the insulation against kondensating humidity from outside. All seams are sealed with butyl tape, that stays flexible and tacky also in very low temperatures. 2. We placed the new insulation in this pocket. 3. Last we placed the stainless basin back and sealed it to the outer floorjet hull with butyl tape. 4. The insulation around the hole for the cooling tubes is also sealed with fat butyl tape. And because this point is a weakness and kondensation tends to build up around the cooling tubes, I placed 10cm polyurethane foam under the freezer and blew expanding foam along the tubings. Dont cut this foam. The surface is waterpoof as long as its not cut. 5. Its worth to place a waterproof DS18b20 temperatur sensor along with the tubes, so you can install a more modern temperature controll later. Oliver from Vela Nautica Amel54 #39 Martinique

My questions were sent after I designed/installed everything and therefore I had very specific, detailed questions of a semi-technical nature that distributors couldn't answer. To be the voice of hope - perhaps you can check the sensors.
Our sensor wire was damaged and therefore would not operate on one axis. That said, by engaging the valve with a screwdriver enabled me to operate it hydraulically. Replacing the sensor fixed the problem. Amel has them. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Parasailor on A54
Scott SV Tengah
On our recent 31 day passage, we had plenty of time to play with the Parasailor and I believe I have figured out a way to rig it up without anything more than three blocks and a few soft shackles.
See attached photos. There is no chafing now. I learned how to make dyneema soft shackles and made about 10 of them. They’re super easy to make and very useful to have aboard.
Here’s how we set up the bow and windward downguy
First block is attached via a soft shackle to the soft shackle that is on our Bamar EJF-1 curler. The windward downguy goes from the Parasailor tack/windward clew first to this block. This prevents the downguy from going too far forward and rubbing on the bow seat.
Second block is connected via two soft shackles to those “horns” that are on the bow roller. Windward downguy then goes through this block. On our A54 #69, the horns are like downward facing hooks, but there is a small closed loop where I attached the 5mm soft shackles. I was worried 5mm would be a bit small but breaking strength should be 3000kg and I flew the Parasailor for, I think, 10 total days on this passage in up to 30 knots true without any issues. I believe the sail will rip before the soft shackle.
Third block is attached to the second cleat aft from the bow. The windward downguy then goes through this block and continues to the staysail track back to the secondary winch.
The rest of the lines: The windward sheet goes through the pole, which is set at nearly Genoa clew height (far forward) and is only tightened enough to prevent the Parasailor from swinging too far to leeward. We tried to run it without the pole but it doesn't seem to work that well - too much lateral motion.
Leeward sheet goes directly to the leeward Genoa track and then Genoa block then primary winch.
We started out hating the sail, but now we wouldn’t want to do a double handed light wind circumnavigation without it. We have flown it nearly DDW in 10 knots true (5kts SOG, 5 kts apparent) and also flown it in 30+ knots true (9+ SOG and 20-25 apparent). It can fly from 80 apparent to DDW. This range makes the slightly cumbersome setup worth it. Additionally, the rolling is reduced DRAMATICALLY and there is almost none of the luffing/slamming you get with the wing-on-wing setup.
One additional tip is that I put a soft shackle with a metal ring (snatch block would be better) on the life rail, around the location of the forward cleat. The snuffer line runs here and then back to the mast winches. I don’t winch it down for fear of ripping the sail, but simply put a few wraps on the winch. The angle that this creates in the snuffer line makes it much easier to snuff the sail in higher winds.
Hope this helps. Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Teun,
You're using the VEConfig software to adjust the inverter low voltage cutoff? I have successfully changed that on the Inverter tab "DC input low shut-down". Then you have to "Send Settings" to the Quattro otherwise it won't save them. If you are still having problems, I have a contact with Victron that is quite responsive. Maybe Dutch people don't like other Dutch people? ;) We've had over 30 emails back and forth. FYI he suggested 20v as the input low voltage cutoff and 21.5v as the input low restart. Additionally, try here. This may be even better. They're almost as helpful as the AYOG :) https://community.victronenergy.com/index.html -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Washing Machine and 50 htz
As many of you know, I've been running lithium for 18 months full-time now, mostly in the tropics. We have 960w solar on the arch. We considered the Quattro 8k and decided not to for a few reasons:
1) The 5k barely fit. See attached photo. The 8k is 50% heavier at 45kg. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/groupsioattachments/29189/33126257/47890/0?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJECNKOVMCCU3ATNQ&Expires=1588706340&Signature=FwI3DgnIE%2FEbyKAFUU1yWCrzB9g%3D&response-content-disposition=inline%3B+filename%3D%2220190907_103355.jpg%22 2) I have run it for 18 months now with the vast majority of the time in tropical heat. The admiral has been known to run the boiler, microwave and toaster at the same time. That is nearly 5000 watts total, around 200amps. We have never had issues with power tapering. This is a rare load and even when you have it, it won't be for too long. Additionally, the engine room is often not that hot at anchor, given we don't run the generator often and the surrounding sea (25-28c on average in the tropics) cools the room quickly. We've even figured out how to run the scuba compressor on inverter. 3) The 5k has 30w no-load power consumption. The 8k has 60w no-load power consumption. 30w/25.6v = 28.125 additional amp hours per day for having the 8k over the 5k. Given my 960w solar arch produces about 200-250AH per day, choosing the bigger inverter means 10% of the daily solar output is "wasted" just to keep the 8k turned on. That said, I've figured out how to put in a simple switch to turn off/on the inverter without having to run the Phoenix panel, which consumes power. But even then, you're still burning over 2.3 amps just keeping the 8k on. See #50689 In fact, I tweaked the jumper settings in the amel installed MasterVolt 800w inverter (under the chart table) to reduce no-load consumption (5w now) and try to run it whenever I need to use less than 800w. 4) The 5k requires TWO PAIRS of 50mm^2 wires for a 0-5m run. The 8k requires TWO PAIRS of 70mm^2 wires for the same run. I can't recall the exact specs for the original Amel installed wires, but we couldn't use them (we had Dolphin 100amp and 40amp chargers) as they were too small for even the 5k. We ended up using the Dolphin 100amp charger wires to connect the second charger (Victron Skylla-i 80amp) For us, we had to break out the epoxy between the passage and the engine room. It's actually not that hard - you can do all of it from the passage. Just remember to reseal it. I admire your goal of trying to minimize genset usage. We've focused on the same as we're not-so-closet environmentalists and since installation of all the parts, have focused on reducing the "background drain". On the Atlantic crossing we ran the genset 60-90 minutes a day, with both the 120amp Quattro and the 80 amp skylla chargers running. On our recent Panama-Hawaii 4848nm unplanned passage (thanks coronavirus!) we ran it 45 minutes every 2nd day. That was all from optimizing consumption. The little things add up. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

We've been drying the fridge out for a week now and a few drops of water STILL come out. It bubbles out at the interface of the PVC pipe where the condenser copper lines go down to the compressor and the stainless. I think that there is a bad seal between that PVC pipe and the stainless box.
Oliver's video showed very wet insulation there so I don't think my problem is isolated. Further, I was getting water buildup in the bilge under the sink. Since turning off this galley top loading fridge, I no longer get water buildup. I surmise I may need to replace my insulation and reseal the connection between the PVC pipe and the stainless box. Perhaps even replace the PVC with a stainless tube that is welded in? Re: Xantrex Link 10 Battery Monitor
Hi Paul, on BeBe the Victron BMV712 went into the same round hole in the 24v panel that the previous Link 10 had been in. The BMV came with a shunt and it uses a cat 5 cable with quick connect ends. I used the old Link 10 cable to pull the new BMV cable through from behind the battery compartment over head (conduits) to the cabinet over the galley sink where the 24 volt panel is mounted. The new shunt with a quick connect terminal has the same dimensions and battery connections as our previous shunt. The Victron Venus GX is mounted just behind the 24 panel in the same cabinet. It requires a power source, and then the in/outs from your BMV, MPPT, MultiPlus, ... So that is what should determine its location. Let me know if you have other questions.
