We have 3000 amps on the Victron multiplus and not enough to run our washer. So thinking of adding the 5000amp victron and upgrading to lithium’s when we get back to the boat. We washing at sea. It has to be calm. Very calm. Our washer has a spin cycle that goes variably 600 to 900 rpm, any yaw and it wants out! How many amps is your inverter? Porter A54-152.

Hi Martin,
I'm not sure. I found this reference on the estimate I got from FKG: "Rotating Actuator OpacMare Passerelle:1849.26.02.24" So this may on may not be the Opacmare number. Cheers, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Washing Machine and 50 htz
This is one of those “duh” moments.
We have been aboard Cream Puff for 5+ year cruising full time. When in a marina with the incorrect cycles to run the washing machine, we have always run the genset periodically when needing to catch up on the laundry.
Now in Tahiti where voltage is like no other place on earth: 220v 60 htz, we parked in a marina and were disappoint when we discovered the wrong cycle for the washer/dryer.
Now comes the “duh” moment. Unplug the washer/dryer from its normal outlet and plug it into an outlet with power from the inverter. No need to run the generator. Also with a battery charger running (separate from the inverter/charger), there is no battery drain and no “pass through” power.
A couple of year ago, I upgraded the inverter aboard Cream
Puff and it has ample wattage to run the washer/dryer. I have no idea as to why
I didn’t think of earlier. If you haven’t thought of this yet either, you can
buy me a beer later.

Mark

I agree, this is a big issue....
I have had issues with insurance companies that say they CAN'T insure Elyse because she is British registered, moored in New Zealand and I live in Australia. What has all that got to do with the risk of insuring a boat ? Right now I only have her insured for NZ waters as my plans to sail in the South Pacific this season are on hold...indefinitley. Re: "Bird Cage" TV Antenna
Marco Mancini
Dear Duane,
I have seen only now your message. We have the same difficulty in recieving the DTV tv signal also mooring in places where the tv signal is very good. I Confirm the possible shortcut on the head of the mast and the huge signal dispersion In fact I noticed that one we switch on the main mast navigation lights and the while the tv is on we have the termic switch of the lights that swich off. Do you have a picture of the masterhead you mentioned .? I have understood from your email that this cover contains the connection with the antenna and the rusted part is inside and not visible from a simple visual inspection on the mast head. Am I right ? marco Desiree SM 304

Re: OPACMARE gangway not rotating
Hj Greg, Opacmare does not make this thing themselves. It’s a more or less generic part that can also be used in other machinery. We tried to find out who actually makes it but Opacmare removed any reference from the actuator. My guess is the thing was never designed for the marine environment and Opacmare did a sloppy job protecting it from salt water.

I would certainly appreciate Zoom sessions with subject matter experts who can keep us up to date on topics which are relevant to our vessels.
Maybe we can add Instrumentation Systems (B&G, Furuno, Raymarine etc) to the list. Also of interest would be Communications Systems (Satellite, SSB, etc). You have created a (nice) monster Bill 👍 Dean SY Stella A54-154

Arno,
Is the actuator totally hydraulic or is there an electrical component to it. If there is any electro-magnetic control/clutch function, the manufacturer must use low carbon mild steel to concentrate the magnetic flux (think soft iron core in a transformer).
Could this be the reason they used material that is so unsuitable in a marine environment?

You were very fortunate. Our actuator was seized up so bad that the whole workshop of FKG hydraulics here in St. Maarten found no way to disassemble the thing. I suppose if there is still some motion in the actuator you will be able to take it apart. That seems good news for Chiara. To your comments about Opacmare. Yes we had trouble with them as well, although not as bad as you describe. On the other hand , a fellow boat owner had a passerelle from a different manufacturer and he also suffered huge communication and cooperation problems with that vendor. Re: Insurance Companies
Hi Mark,
Really appreciate your and the other members help on this.
Yes Sir – all of these are part of the 6 or 7 I approached.
Y-Yacht Niki: reason 1 and 5 on my list The Marina Shop – still waiting but informed me I needed new rigging Gowrie – the RI agent reason #7 and the FL agent reason #3 and #4 but she is now working on this again.
Top Sail is the ONLY one coming back with a proposal which I am currently discussing as I would like to have additional hard storage coverage as long as I am not back to the boat (might be for another 4 to 6 months). BTW a very, very fair proposal and only requiring a rigging survey which is fine with me.

Bill,
I think that insurance is a very big issue. I have now approached 6 to 7 agents/companies mentioned on our AYOG Forum and get very conflicting reasons of not willing to write insurance, like:
In talking to agents recommended via our AYOG forum I realize few of them remember/recognize the AMEL specific 6 or 7 watertight compartments so they tell me I need additional pumps on board; our overbuild rigging etc. etc.; and tell me I need to renew my rigging (just surveyed in December 2019 in COOMERA) because it is now 10 years old.
In all honesty: agency on #3 and #4 is now looking at this again after I wrote back I was a USA resident and had a USA address she replied she was going to look into this.
I know I am not the only AMEL owner having this problem – another member mentioned on the forum maybe looking at organizing our own group insurance (maybe via LLOYDS ?? they are used to write unusual policies)
