Have I lost the bow thruster prop ?

Hello everybody

Today was my first sea trial to ferry SM471 to it's new home , and before exiting the rather large and peaceful port of "Le Frioul",
I thought I would be a good idea to pratice a few strait  line in reverse using the bow thruster in burst of 6 to 8 sec (rather then 2 or 3 sec ??) when needed.The wind was 15~20 KTS  gusting 30 .
After 20 good minutes of practice ,actionning the bow thruster control was no longer moving the bow ,but we could hear the motor running !!
Any thoughts, short of diving under without a wetsuit ?

I recently pulled the fuel tank on my 83 maramu. I had an unknown leak at the forward end of it that had rotted a small section of the companionway bulkhead just to the left (starboard) of the stoop. I was worried about the integrity of the tank and needed to make repairs to the bulkhead and inspect the tank. After pulling the tank I was able to determine that the cause of the leak was a kink in the metal return line hose that had been leaking. I believe this occurred a number of years ago when the previous owner installed a 110V switch board above the tank at this location. Over time the leaking hose had soaked into the bulkhead. I pulled the tank and cut out the damaged section of bulkhead, ground back any delaminated tabbing and reinstalled a new section of the bulkhead using oversized peyson joints on both sides of the bulkhead. 

Regarding your question, I can explain exactly how I removed my tank and would be happy to talk with you in person and walk you through the process. I also have extensive pictures I could provide. In summary, I had to remove a 100V pannel that was located above the tank, then removed the top board and facing and the lower retaining board. Once free there is a vent in the aft back corner that needs to be removed, the return line in the forward back corner and the fill hose. Also the lower forward supply line must be disconnected. After that you will need 2 big guys to muscle the tank out. I moved mine to the saloon area alone but would not do that again as the tank is shaped to the hull with the lower portion of it being only approx 6" wide. It will try to fall over very easily. 

 Regarding additional removal of saloon cabinetry to prep to move the tank. You will need to unbolt the liquor cabinet from the main area and move it over towards the port seats. I dont believe you will need to remove either the stairs or starboard grab rail that is beside the stairs. I did not need to do that in order to move my tank into the saloon. After careful inspection of my tank and determining the cause of my leak I decided not to remove the tank from the boat but just move it into the saloon while repairs to the bulkhead were being completed. However, I considered moving it out of the boat in order to get it pressure tested and cleaned. Therefore, I did measure the tank and companionway entrance to determine if it was possible. I believe I would have needed to remove the companionway sliding door in order to have enough clearance to get the tank all the way out of the boat.

I have a leak in my fuel tank and I will be replacing it !!
Any information on taking the old one out and replacing with a new one would be appreciated. I remember reading that it can be taken out but don’t know what needs to be removed to do this?


Such as the island cabinet in the main cabin, stairs, hand rail, hard dodger? I am on the hard in Cartagena Columbia and receiving bids for a new tank. The only change I would like would be clean out ports.

We have been turned onto iSailor by other cruisers who use it. I downloaded the app and charts. It really works well. One of the very appealing features is you “rent” the charts rather than buy them at full price. The price of the rental averages about US$30 for a year and charts are automatically updated when newer versions become available.

We have used Nobeltec TZ  as our primary source for navigation since purchasing Cream Puff. We upgraded the ships PC to a solid-state computer custom built for us by Island Time PC and linked the PC to the NMEA 0183. Other aspects include integrated ActiveCaptain and AIS. In addition to a very comprehensive routing engine we have the ability to download weather and sea conditions while in-route using our sat-phone. This overlays onto the plotter and the routing engine will adjust the suggested course as necessary.

Yes I have both and both are useful BUT I don’t seem to be able to get tidal streams [current and direction] live time on I Navx. I have ‘Aye tides” but this only gives depths and not tidal streams live time. Europe is the area I am interested in at the moment.

Any ideas?

Are you sure the part you have seen at Sea Power Marine is for the MDKD genset?  That is a model significantly older and rather different than the one on your boat.  They also state on their website that they do not ship outside the UK (in fact, they exclude a lot of the UK from their sales territory!)

There was a vendor on EBay that made beautiful cast stainless exhaust elbows for Yanmars. Much better than the factory version. I have one Kimberlite  and it is flawless. Possibly someone can find them and ask is the do,  or will make the elbow you need.

Congratulations! I know the SMs on either side of 476. 

BTW, I travel the world. I have clients in France, all of Europe, New Zealand, Australia, USA, and many other places. I travelled to New Caledonia to train an owner new to Amel.

If it is impossible to repair (I doubt that), I would buy another Climma Compact Unit. Climma Compact Units routinely last 20 years, yet there are those that change brands because if failed. Climma and Frigoboat, both VECO companies, were Henri Amels choice. I think he was right.
